*looks at 1995 World Series trophy*

Welp. But in all seriousness, it's probably UGA's National Championship in 1980. Pretty much everyone involved with that 1980 team gets treated like a god, here.

But as far as championships that I actually care about, it's that baseball trophy. We don't exactly have a trophy cabinet in this town.

Adopted US City- Red Sox '04 series. No question.

Saints- FA Cup 1976. No Option.

Hertfordshire (Home county) not much to speak of, a few good spells from watford, Saracens have won the Rugby union Premiership, if you can include natives, Nick Faldo and Lewis Hamilton are both Herts natives.

Just on the first two lines, the Red Sox win was a real monkey of a city's back. Nothing the Celtic, Pats or Bruins have achieved comes close. On Southampton, in some ways finishing runners up in the old first division in 1983-84 is arguably a more impressive avhievement from a better team than the cup win, although that was a very different world to the Premier League of today, runners up to the European cup winners of that season is not to be sniffed at.

IMO, Michigan's most significant championship is the 1968 Tigers. The legend of that team seems to grow with each passing year.

For my hometown (Kingston, as Clifford hasn't even had a school since 1965), there are two teams that stick out: 1996 in football and 2007 in boys basketball. The 1996 Cardinals football team dominated the NCTL, going 9-0, won those games by at least 3 touchdowns, and came within one win of the state title game . The 2007 boys basketball team had one of most loaded lineups in the area, went 20-0, blew through districts, won regionals, but fell in the quarterfinals.

For me, Flint's most significant championship was the 1995-96 Flint Generals. A 51-win team that lost only 3 games in the playoffs and won the city's first pro hockey championship in 12 years. Plus, it was during the height of the Generals' popularity.

Well, I live in Orlando at the moment. The Magic have 0 NBA titles and they are our only Big 4 team. The Orlando City soccer team has won a couple titles in the last few years which could count, I'd probably pick 1998 though when the Orlando Predators won their first Arena Football League title with a big upset win over the heavily favored arch-rival Tampa Bay Storm.

That's off the top of my head anyways.

I grew up in Tampa, there the 2002 Bucs easy.

Ohio State's 2002 Championship has been praised, especially by this one 'mom-and-pop' donut shop, where they have 2-3 newspapers on the wall, commemorative pictures, etc.

Cincinnati - 1975 Reds

That team was the apex of the Big Red Machine. They won 108 games, they finally got over the hill after disappointments in the 70, 72 world series, losing to the inferior Mets in the 73 NLCS, and completely missing the playoffs in 74. That team ended the 35 year drought. Plus they won one of the best World Series ever. The 76 team gets overlooked despite going 7-0 in the playoffs because it was just more of the same and the 1990 team doesn't seem to have captured the hearts of the city the same way the 75 team did.

When people talk about the Reds they talk about the 1975 Reds. I wish I had been there to see it.

Vet dont you mean January 2005? (when the Eagles were last in the superbowl)

Even tho I wasn't alive when it happened (missed by 4 years abouts), it seems like the 1980 world series win by the Phillies was, I will say the 2008 win was very sweet but Im sure the 1980 was crazy.

Then I guess would be the flyers first win.

God help the city if the eagles ever win a superbowl.

No. I meant Jan 19 2003 (2002 season). The worst loss in the entire history of philadelphia pro sports.

Most significant in all of Los Angeles history has to be the 1985 Lakers. Prior to that one, an 0-7 NBA Finals record against the Celtics, including a full-blown choke job in 1984. Boston getting all of the bounces while Los Angeles simply finds new ways to collapse to the men in green.

Enter the 1985 championship series, and even after a torched Game 1 ("Memorial Day Massacre"), the Lakers somehow recover and do the unthinkable: clinch the NBA title on the hallowed grounds at Boston Garden. The look of ecstasy from Laker players and of disgust by Celtic players and fans (especially Red Auerbach not wanting to show face after the buzzer) show the overall want and joy all of Los Angeles got from that historic series. It definitely shifted the premise of this city, from Dodgers baseball to Lakers basketball as the town's flagship franchise.

To a lesser extent, the most significant in my lifetime is the 2010 Lakers title. Not only for the aftermonded, redux reasons, but it was Kobe and Pau's revenge series on Garnett, Pierce and Allen, who along the Celtics two years prior called those Lakers, "soft and undetermined."

Phila's hasn't happened yet. Should've in '02.

Didn't all of Philadelphia make a gigantic deal about the 2008 Phillies? You know, the team which won the city its 1st title in a quarter-century, breaking the "Curse of Billy Penn?"

Yes, and there were more than 2 million people at the parade, during a work day.

Doesn't matter. The one that will mean the most is when the Eagles win it, and that 2002 season was the best chance. As big as the Phillies got, at the end of the day, it's a football city.

Phoenix would be the 2001 World Series. Probably the only major championship the city has ever won.

Yep, that is the only title ever to have been won by an Arizona team.

I think between the Cardinals (Super Bowl XLIII), Suns (horrible home playoff losses in the mid-1990s and mid-2000s), Diamondbacks (Byung-Hung Kim) and Coyotes (well, you know...), Phoenix would have qualified as one of the most tortured sports cities in America, right up there with Cleveland and Buffalo, had Mariano closed out Game 7 in 2001.

But that thrilling World Series finish and their OITGDNHL-attitude towards the Coyotes steers clears of them from any of these lists.

I know a playoff loss is tough, but what makes that one the worst? Last Eagles game at the Vet? The Buccaneers not winning a game in cold weather? Both? More?

Man, I HATED that 02 Eagles team, and basically figured the Bucs were dead in the water coming into that game.

Don't forget San Diego when it comes to tortured sports cities(Chargers numerous chokes recently, whether it be the playoffs or regular season).

2002 for Sacramento wouldve been so frickin huge, but we all know what happened.

And how would we all have known if they would be able to beat the Gannon-Rice-Brown Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII? I think of the two in that NFC title game, they would have not preferred the Bucs because of the defense and of Gruden knowing Oakland's coaching philosophy.

And that's exactly what happened.

Well, I don't considered San Diego a "tortured" city as much as a "jinxed" city. They've had their share of catastrophic losses but usually not to the extent and damage of other, more unfortunate towns.

Hell, in the four major leagues, those teams combined have made only three total championship game/series equivalents, and they were sadly against a historically-dominant team (Super Bowl XXIX, 1984 and 1998 World Series).

They lose and lose big, but not as often as you think.

Well, if HS counts then... my HS has won 2-3 state Lax titles in a row. And they've already qualified for a home playoff game and are currently #1 in their region at 8-1.

Why are you guys playing high school lacrosse at this time of the year?

As for my hometown's most significant championship, was when my high school women's Basketball team won the national championship in '07 when we had Maya Moore and went 38-0.

You'll be lucky to find anyone around here who even knows what lacrosse is. I've never played, but if we had it, I would consider joining

One advantage of being an old guy is I was around to see it. The '75 Reds pitching staff wasn't exactly one for the ages*, but they more than made up for it with their hitting. In my humble opinion, the '75 Reds have to be in any discussion of the 10 greatest baseball teams of all time. They were something else. Best team I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

*Cue Kramerica to come along and tell me I'm wrong about that.
