Runner pulls out of championships because her number was ’666′

I might get lit up for this but...

She's silly for reacting that way. But so are the race organizers. It's a simple change and I don't understand why you'd want anyone uncomfortable. Even if you find it silly and superstitious I don't know why you'd purposely make someone run with it. It's a simple and perhaps silly change, but it's hardly a big deal to assign a new bib number.

If I ran that race, I never would have even printed one with 666 knowing the potential issues...

As a non-religious person who almost never sides with the religious on such matters, I agree. Just give her a new number.

I do wonder, if this is anything like how they organise a marathon, in which the number was assigned onto a computer and she wore a chip on her shoelace that represents the number. So, when she asked for a change, the orgainisers could not find a way to reassign a number in time.

Well, I can't speak for other states, but I know Illinois instituted this technology years ago. We may have a winning counterargument here.

As a fellow Catholic, this statement is a boat load of crap. Go to any Catholic-heavy neighborhood here in SoCal for example and you'll see how "liberal" the church is. From all the teenagers having 3-4 kids because their parents told them that "abortion and contraception are the devil" to them saying that "dating a person or having friends from another race is a sin," the Catholic headmen in here are neo-conservative, Orthodox watchdogs. Especially in dense Latino neighborhoods in Mid-City and Westlake-Alvarado, the idea of a "liberal Catholic" is an oxymoron at best. I might be one of the rare Catholics who are in favor of gay marriage, abortion and mixed race dating, but I wouldn't dare to even think of saying such herressey in this city. Not with such extremists running the Catholic church.

'Cuz if you can't say anything intelligent to back up your argument, just make :censored: up!

That's pretty much what I was thinking. I'm sure they've run into this before. Why not just skip it, like the 13th floor?

Exactly, it may seem silly to some people, but for deeply christian people the number 666 is offensive and it is better to avoid it all together.

I'm Catholic and am at a Catholic school and I remember one one of my religion teachers saying that even though the number is "the devils number" it still just a number that comes up in everyday life. But then again Catholics seem to be the most liberal with stuff like that, unless it's the gays.

But yeah just skip that number if this is going to happen.

What in the blue hell are you even talking about? If you were talking about Evangelical Christians, then yeah, sure, but Catholics? I've NEVER seen this type of "extreme" mentality in the Catholic Church. And I grew in a devoutly Catholic family and went to Catholic schools most of my life.

But then again, Southern Californians are their very own breed of ridiculous. No matter the "faith".

I think the technology argument is persuasive and probably the best one.

I suppose. And I suppose if I ran one of these, I'd just have it set up not to offer numbers like 13, 666, 1313, etc. I cannot quite relate to this stuff mattering (be it superstition, religion, or a combination thereof), but it can't hurt just to take 'em out of circulation.

Sort of surprised they didn't do that, actually. The New York Marathon had about twenty thousand unused bib numbers, and I'd bet they made those among them.

But since they didn't, she has to run with what they gave her. Can't start letting runners hold out for lucky numbers.

On one hand I can see why it would bother someone, and it woudn't have been a big deal to skip it, on the other my Bible does have a page 666 in it...

Is it the King James version? I had some guy give me a pamphlet at the county fair a few years ago that literally said any version of the Bible other than King James' was the work of the Devil. And I mean literally, not figuratively. It had a drawing of the Devil standing behind the people translating the Bible. That could explain the page 666, if you have some Satan-worshipping NIV Bible.

Well there are--so it needs more pages than that.

I have a few different versions, so the people who made that pamphlett would not like me.

But those are best discussed elsewhere given the forum rules.
