Bayne
Hey there! So im currently travelling around the world from australia and im now in san francisco. I notice how many people over here don either giants or 49ers gear- its crazy. I would really like to grab myself a giants cap but its almost impossible to find one that isnt a flat brim. Why is this the case? Everyone has to be able to pull off the gangster look all of a sudden? I cant do it. And dont tell me you can curve a flat brim because you can't. It doesn't look right. Is there anyone in this city or someone who has been here who knows of a place that sell more than about 5 curves brimmed hats?
TBGKon
You can curve a brim, it just takes time. See link below:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8PijumsIso
CubsFanBudMan
Fisherman's Wharf has a two-story sports store that used to have a wall of hats. Touristy, but I was very much a tourist when I first visited in 1993. Bought a San Francisco Seals throwback that turned out to be a fauxback (well before either word was uttered on a regular basis). What I remember most is it was the first place I saw the purple and green Bucks logo (on a hat). So they had a selection beyond local teams. It was a logo geek's dream store back in the day.The store was still there in 2009. Can't imagine they only have unbending brims. (And you can curve normal brims. Done it for years.) It doesn't take very long at all to curve them.
FiddySicks
Westgate Mall on Market Street (5th and Market) will have exactly what you're looking for. It's the biggest shopping center in the city. I wouldn't recommend the sports store at Fisherman's Wharf (Pier 39) as they're WAY over priced and have a limited selection of sizes. As for why people wear the flat brim caps, it's just the style. The authentic on field 59Fiftys (same caps the Giants wear on the field and the 49ers wear on the sidelines) are what most people want because of the high quality of the caps and because the brim is pretty customizable. Enjoy SF! I'll be there this weekend, and I can't wait to go back because it's home.
CityOfWalrus
I'll be in the Bay as well for a week and a half starting Saturday. Enjoy it! I love it there.
Bayne
Thanks guys! Actually I did end up going down to fishermans warf and all the piers and I was surprised to find a lot of decent hats. Im pretty sure I was already in Westgate mall on market st and they had nothing, prompting me to make the original post. Anyway I grabbed a new era 9fifty toronto blue jays cap grey with blue brim. Its not a totally flat brim but slightly curved. It'll work. I swear that there are some makes however which have the brim that is very rounded and if u try to curve them it distorts the shape of the cap completely. Anyway. Not a SF cap but I can justify my purchase because I was born in canada. And I dont like being a total sheep lol... so many people here wear SF merch, never seen anything like it. Awesome city. kwmoore
When I go to Lidz, first thing I do when trying one on is bend the brim. I'll spend at least a minute rolling it before I ever put it on. Once I've bought it, I take it out, bend the brim and tuck it in the back of the crown.
ElwoodCuse
Remember when Lids used to sell that plastic thing to keep on your hats to maintain the curve when you weren't wearing it?
FiddySicks
Yeah, the Perfect Curve. It was a HUGE waste of money similar to the majority of Lids non hat products (such as the hat holder that goes in the dishwasher). The same results could easily be attained with a coffee can and a few rubber bands.
Stampman
Flat brimmed hats make no sense to me, the curved brim is better to keep the sun out of you eyes. But I guess if you're cool, you don't need that.Best wishes for your search, and enjoy your trip.
