As a lifelong Baltimore Orioles fan and a graphic designer specializing in branding, I’m a huge fan of the organization’s decision to go back to the cartoon bird as the team’s primary cap logo two years ago. That said, when the new logo was released in November of 2011, I was disappointed that it failed in recreating a few key details of the logos from the 60s, 70s & 80s. Thus, in an effort to give my beloved O's the best logo possible, I've redesigned the logo to more accurately capture the essence of the logos of the past. Here's what I came up with:

Comparison to current logo:

I'd to hear your thoughts on the changes I've made. Any feedback is appreciated!

I love this- I am a lifelong Oriole fan as well and I was overjoyed when we switched back to the cartoon bird from the ornithologically correct bird. I loved the new logo, but I was also disappointed that they didn't keep the cap bill flipped up, so I was overjoyed to see your update took care of this. This is excellent work, and I also am very fond of your Memorial Stadium font!

The front of the bill of the cap being flipped up gets a big thumbs up from me. That's one of the main features of the old cartoon oriole that I really liked. The way the new cap looks in comparison is that the bill sticks out too far, and it's really all I can focus on. The way you have it curved up really alleviates that. Also, good job on the smaller outline as well. Love it.

The changes are all pretty subtle, but they make a big difference.

Now I won't be able to look at the current logo without being annoyed by the bill of the cap.

As a die-hard O's fan I can definitely say your redesign is a subtle, but great improvement on the current logo. I'll be honest, I never noticed the current logo where the bird is looking off to the side. The cap is more pronounced and stands high above the other logo's. But, one design flaw that still irks me with yours and the current logo is that the beak is still not outlined all the way around. It's just this random patch of orange that disappears in the background color. My suggestion would be to try and fix this issue in a way where it improves the logo, but doesn't take away from what you already have. Nicely done, regardless!

i think you've done a good job in fixing some of the issues with the logo but you can push it even further. you might be interested in Von Glitschka's take on it: http://drawsigner.com/2011/11/23/fowl-ball/

This right here is exactly what I'm talking about! Awesome re-design!

Thanks for all of the feedback guys! Sorry for the super-delayed response but here are a few replies:

Thanks for the feedback, dig your stuff on dribbble btw. I've seen the design you linked and personally think it strays too far from the cartoon bird designs of 60's, 70's and 80's. The cap, in particular, is a far cry from the designs of the past. The current logo was meant to be a combination of these two designs:

http://www.sportslogos.net/logos/view/rwx6xa3gj4kf2n4wke5rp8bw4/Baltimore_Orioles/1966/Cap_Logo

http://www.sportslogos.net/logos/view/5236631979/Baltimore_Orioles/1979/Cap_Logo

The current logo does an okay job recreating/combining the faces of these two, but really fails when it comes to the hat, eyes, and outline. Thus, these are the main changes I made with my design, while also taking inspiration from a couple of other past logos to recapture what was already a great logo from the 60s-80s.

But, one design flaw that still irks me with yours and the current logo is that the beak is still not outlined all the way around.

Again, trying to stay as close as possible to the logos of past. I don't think it's a design flaw so long as there is a separate version with a white outline for orange backgrounds. The current logo fails to change the outline color and instead adds and additional white outline around the preexisting orange one...now that really is annoying. Here's an example: http://www.sportsgeekery.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/orioles-wp-23-1920.jpg

Now I won't be able to look at the current logo without being annoyed by the bill of the cap.

I'll never be able to un-see the cap situation on the current logo now. Excellent update.

Sorry to ruin your viewing experiences guys! Guess you'll just have to keep annoying the O's front office to make the switch :P
