Monday, March 19, 1883 – League President August Belmont announces that the league is in the early development of expansion. Two franchises have been sold. The first sold to P.T. Barnum with whom William Kissam Vanderbilt has had business interaction with in the past. Barnum intends to locate his team in his home state of Connecticut. His team is tentatively scheduled to start play in the 1885 or 3rd season. The second franchise sold to Barnum’s close business partner James Anthony Bailey. Bailey intends to place his team in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. This team is expected to begin play in the 1886 or 4th season.

Tuesday, April 3, 1883 – The Rhode Island Quakers hold their cut day. Alva Vanderbilt will be back for another year as the owner of the team. She wasted no time hiring her head coach for another year, all coaches are year to year in this league. However that coach John Vanderbilt may have dropped an opportunity to renegotiate for a higher pay rate. Winning the Title Match and finishing the year undefeated should earn a coach more money but Coach Vanderbilt will make the same rate he earned last season.

The team’s two free agents were Second Option Karl Blaine and Third Option Stewart Cavendish. Blaine was resigned to a new three year contract but for a lower pay rate. He will go from making $5,000 a year to only $3,000. Cavendish was released by the team but he is likely to return as an assistant coach.

Tomorrow the Buccaneers will make their cuts.

Wednesday, April 4, 1883 – The New Orleans Buccaneers go into their cut day. The ownership arrangement will remain the same. Consuelo Montagu quickly resigns head coach David Small who also negotiates a pay increase. Once resigned Small goes about the business of addressing his teams free agents. He signs Second Option Robert Parnell to a new three year deal keeping him at the same pay rate of $5000 a year. Third Option Robert Harcourt was let go but like his Quaker counterpart he is likely to sign as an assistant coach.

Thursday, April 5, 1883 – Afternoon News – Today is Cut Day for the Manhattan Jockeys but while negations regarding that are on going into the evening some other stories break this morning and into the afternoon.

First Alva Vanderbilt has announced that she has purchased land on the southern shore of Newport, Rhode Island with the intention of building her team a velodrome there. She intendeds to name the stadium the Vanderbuilt Velodrome and hopes to have it ready by the 1885 season.

Another story that developed comes from Leonard Jerome the owner of the Brooklyn Dutchmen. There has been some speculation that he may sale or move the team. Jerome has informed the media today that this is not likely. Jerome has stated that most of the Dutchmen’s issues steamed from their poor selection spot at Race Wars. This year his team has the first pick and they intend to use it. As of right now no one knows how good that batch of riders at this years Race Wars will be but Jerome is hoping that he can get at least one rider out of the bunch who can compete with Rhode Islands Ed Davison.
