Monday, March 17, 1884 – Hartford Stags signing day. As an expansion team the Stags were free to sign as many free agents as they liked. Their first pursuit was James Moriondo however he refused to sign stating that he has a better offer elsewhere. They next turned to former Buccaneer Frederick Burke. They signed him to a three year deal to fill their Cleanup position. Then they turned to signing a couple bargin pieces; Robert Ferry formerly of the Jockeys and Richard Leslie who wasn’t even signed last season. Both were signed as deep options and to 1 year contracts.

January 3, 1885 – Following today’s rider assessments at Race Wars the most frustrated team continues to be the Brooklyn Dutchmen. This year’s group has been described as “one game changing player and a bunch of junk”. David Wharton has every team excited, especially the Hartford Stags who have the first pick. The Dutchmen would otherwise have the #1 pick but for the fact that it is an expansion year. Wharton is expected to immediately make the Stags relevant.
