Players were allowed to negotiate the years of their contracts, however the money paid was based on the round they were picked in. Round 1 paid $9000, round 2 $7000, round 3 $6000, round 4 $4000, round 5 $3000, and round 6 $1000. All coaches were, however, signed to 3-year, $5000 deals. This meant that the 1st boards made the equivalent of $180000 a year today, while it would be only $30000 for the 2nd alternates. For head coaches, it would be like making $100000 a year. Many players opted for a 1-year contract, fearing that the league might not succeed.

I have to say I am going to follow this thread. Excellent job on creating the history for the entire NCL from the formation of teams to the first draft. I will be looking forward to team identity outfits plus the start of the inaugural season. Excellent job again on this FunnyHeadlines...great to see people put their passion into something they enjoy. And yes...chess rocks!

Any chance NCL will become a fantasy league?

I doubt it, unless I see a huge chess fan base on this site in the future.

Looks good for that time in history, but for the "jerseys", will there be multi coloured ones in the future (later years) instead of plain colours? Also, finals logo looks good.

There will be multicolored jerseys in the future. I'm also thinking about adding names and numbers to even further add to a team's identities.

September 7, 1877, Philadelphia Liberty at New York Kings (at Central Park)

In the opening match of the NCL, the risk the Kings took in taking Stephen Pryce looks like it could come back to haunt them. He lost his knight in a blunder just 9 moves into the game and it was all downhill from there (for those of you who do not know what a blunder is, it is when you accidentally give up a piece and gain nothing back for it). Boards 2 and 3 both drew, board 2 ending when Akers offered his draw to Ryers and he accepted, and board 3 from 3 move repetition (if in chess the same moves are played by each player 3 times in a row the game is declared a draw). On board 4, the last board to finish, Peter saved the day, sacrificing his rook late in the game for 'mate in 8 moves. The match ends in a 2-2 draw.

September 9, 1877, Toronto Whales at Chicago Chill (at McCormick Place)

Boris Teel looks like he is in for a great career, starting off with a late game back rank checkmate over Alexander Paul. On board 2, Blackbourne destroyed Dan Simpkin, taking his queen and both bishops early in the game. Dennell helped out his Teel and the Chill with a surprise mid-game 'mate that Stoddard didn't notice. As for board 4, Mathews was in control the whole way, winning with a smothered 'mate. The match ends in a 2-2 draw. At the end of week 1, it's looking like it's going to be a very competitive season. All teams are tied with 0.5 points.

Standings at the end of week 1:

1. Chicago Chill 0.5-0.5

1. New York Kings 0.5-0.5

1. Philadelphia Liberty 0.5-0.5

1. Toronto Whales 0.5-0.5

September 14, 1877, Toronto Whales at Philadelphia Liberty (at Philadelphia City Hall due to rain)

The first win in NCL history comes in week 2 as the Whales get a 3-1 victory over the Liberty. Paul and Blackbourne dominated their opponents right out of the gate, both winning queens in exchange for minor pieces (a minor piece is a knight or bishop) in the mid-game. Stoddard, the only loser on the Whales' squad at board 3, was back rank 'mated by Woody Rounds' queen. Finishing it up on board 4 in the last game to finish, Mathews was down a pawn, or 1 capture point, when his opponent, Ridley Quigley, ran out of time, thus giving the game, and consequently the match, to the Whales.

September 16, 1877, New York Kings at Chicago Chill (at McCormick Place)

In a huge upset in the minds of many, Stephen Pryce defeats Boris Teel in a game that seemed to stretch on for hours. Pryce was able to finish it off when he left Teel with just a king while he himself still had a rook. On board 2, Barclay Ryers drew for the second match in a row when Simpkin offered an early draw and Ryers accepted. This turned out being a bad move in the end for Simpkin. On boards 3 and 4, Kings players Boyce and Peter dominated their opponents the whole game, with Boyce winning by a total of 13 capture points when the game ended. A dominating performance as the Kings win 3.5-0.5.

Standings at the end of week 2:

1. New York Kings 1.5-0.5

1. Toronto Whales 1.5-0.5

3. Chicago Chill 0.5-1.5

3. Philadelphia Liberty 0.5-1.5
