Oh okay. Guys, guys, they're not that good.

Oh that joke never gets old.

These aren't great at all, but they're hardly the apocalyptic abomination that some here want them to be.

Classic CCSLC hyperbole.

Sorry to break it to you but these are tied with the JAGS for the ugliest uniform in the league.

No, these are the single worst thing to ever see an NFL field. These are bad by Arena League standards. There are literally no redeeming qualities to this identity. Even the helmet is awful. The Jaguars have a set that, with a few tweaks, could fall into the category of "poor but forgettable ultra-modern uniform that will be changed in five years and nobody will miss."

This Bucs set is horrific barring a new font, new helmet, new logos, elimination of chrome, and elimination of attempted matte pewter. By the time you got these looking "respectable," the set would look nothing like it does now. It's like saying that if I was a little taller, in slightly better shape, shaved my head, grew a mustache, and was black, I could pass for Michael Jordan.

I will admit that they are not "as bad" on field as I expected they'd be. But still:

  • Giant helmet logo: downgrade
  • Goofball number font: downgrade
  • Shoulder yokes: downgrade
  • Little orange dash under yokes: stupid
  • pants striping: downgrade
  • Different patch on each sleeve: downgrade (and stupid)
  • New pewter: downgrade
  • Logo update: Push (to me, but many people feel very strongly that it's a huge downgrade)

And there was one thing I really hated about the old set: the overly-detailed pirate ship on the sleeve. And they left that (or a new version of that) on just one sleeve! They actually made it worse.

"Not as bad as I thought minus the awful number font" is a far cry from being anything but a huge downgrade from the NFL's best example of a "modern classic." "Not as bad as I thought minus the awful number font" could take it out of your bottom-3 (though it remains in my bottom-3) but can it really move the Bucs up your list? Is there really anyone that thinks this is an improvement?

I disagree completely. I don't think this is hyperbole at all - they really are that bad. I don't overly praise or slam designs - I can almost always at least see what a team was going for, even if they failed. With this, I have no idea what they were even thinking about. It's just a collection of bad ideas thrown together with little-to-no cohesion.

Yes. I don't always prefer a change. But I very, very, very rarely see a change and say "I don't have one damn clue how anyone could think that's an upgrade." Of all the downgrades during the Reebok NHL makeover when Reebok took over (and I felt most were downgrades), only Edmonton's fit this category for me; where I could not fathom why a team would do that and that any person would say "oh yeah; better." Other than that, it's pretty much the Jags helmet and this Bucs uniform (for pros; college FB is a way different story).

There is really not a lot redeemable about this, particularly given what they replaced with it. That's why it's being met with so much derision. It's a huge head-scratcher. I'd still rank Jacksonville worse (and I don't think they look good from the neck down) but part of the issue there is that Jacksonville did not dump a strong uniform when they went this way. Tampa did.

My question would be, did the Bucs execs and/or players think that the last look was outdated? My second question would then be how was it outdated? There is not one single upgrade in the whole set. It just baffles me that the organization and the NFL can accept a heaping pile of garbage like this. It's even more baffling that Nike decided to scrap the whole uniform minus the colors and come up with this.

This pretty much summarizes my feelings completely . . . with one change, as noted in bold.

"Not as bad" =/= remotely good.

I can get on board with the helmet sans huge logo. The chrome facemask works better in my opinion than the black one did.

The uniform however is still hard to grasp. With the numbers being the largest visual component, you would think they'd have the decency to not completely :censored: them up so bad.

None of it surprises me. I'm sure the players would clap like seals for whatever new crap they're told is the most cutting edge. The organization felt that fan interest was waning because their uniforms grew stale, not because they'd become a dumpster fire of an organization over the past decade, so they listened to Nike's branding spiel on how to fix their image. I'm sure that the NFL doesn't mind this pile of garbage. The NFL is a slut, because they knew Nike's intentions when they got in its car. Nobody in the league offices was shocked when they saw what became of the Bucs.

Least of all, I am not at all baffled that Nike would do such a thing. This is exactly what they do, and what we all thought they would do. This is not Nike giving the Bucs a modern classic look that could be adapted to any template, which looked nearly as good today as a decade ago. This is "Nike presents: Pewter Power - starring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers". This is Nike throwing everything out the window to come up with the most outlandish design, devoid of any restraint or tact, and emphasizing their proprietary template. The team is irrelevant, because this design is about Nike. The teams are dumb for going along with it, absolutely. But Nike would push any envelope in an effort to get more notoriety. And you can bet that they showed the Bears ideas for revamping them to black and bronze, and showed the Packers mock-ups of them in highlighter yellow. They have zero concern with respecting aesthetic traditions or even putting out a quality design. The Bucs and Jags are basically Nike creating saleman samples to show to college football teams.

The spray painted black helmet stripes bug the living crap out of me. If they dropped that, I'd be on board with the helmet. I actually like the inner silver number outlines but it needs to be silver and not chrome at night time. Obviously number font is horrid and the all pewter shoulders need to go. The matte pewter doesn't work, either.

The more I see these uniforms, the more sad I become. The logo is awful. The helmet is awful. The jerseys and pants wouldn't be that bad if it weren't for the numbers and the fact that they're replacing one of the best uniform sets in the league. The only thing the other set was missing, in my opinion, was red socks.

This is how bad those new Bucs unis are. I'm a Bucs fan and an an ENORMOUS sucker for new merchandise. I spent way more money on the old gear than I care to admit (I have a customized Bucfan 56 Nike Elite jersey for crying out loud!) . With this new set I haven't bought a single item, and don't plan to even in my most impulsive moments.

It's one thing to look at these and say, "Meh, they aren't THAT bad" and then go back to ignoring them like you always do because they're historically an awful franchise and are thousands of miles away. But if someone who is a huge fan of the team and is an admitted sports merchandise whore isn't going to buy anything from the new set, you know they're a total fail.

Helmet: Upgrade

Number font: Downgrade. These uniforms would be amazing with a better font.

Shoulder Yokes: It's just a different design, but it's great.

Pant's striping: Significant upgrade. Not every pant's stripe has to go from waistline to hem. They work perfectly with the modern design.

Different patches on each sleeve: Downgrade

New Pewter: Actually pewter. Upgrade.

Logo Update: Push. Possibly a slight downgrade.

It's not an improvement as such, the old uniforms were great, but it's a really nice modern design overall and it doesn't deserve the sort of over the top vitriol it gets in this thread

How is the current color "actually pewter" when pewter is a metal and now it's matte?

How is the helmet an upgrade with the black spray paint and obnoxiously oversized logo?

How is the shoulder yoke a better design then the last one with the matte pewter shoulders being so close and so different than the super shiny metallic helmets?
