Does it bother anybody else how perfectly symmetrical the skull is? it really bothers me because I know human skulls are not symmetrical and especially are not symmetrical on a jolly roger flag. That's the biggest problem I have with this new logo. It's way too perfect and clean.

I suppose it bothers you that the St. Louis Rams have a blue ram as a logo.

Um, no that's a completely different subject and for the record it does not bother me that it is a blue Ram or the Dolphins logo is a green dolphin. I am talking about the style in which the logo was rendered that I don't necessarily care for, that's all.

'Tis the point though.

Yeah I guess, just doesn't seem very "piratey" anymore, you know. The logo isn't bad, per se, but the Bucs color scheme and identity conveys a rugged, swashbuckling theme that I don't think the new logo fits with.

Yeah, the old one had a real "treasure map" feel to it, giving it real character without being too on-the-nose. This new one is well-drawn but much more generic.

I just noticed something that bugs me. The crossed swords on the flag are exact matches for the sword that's holding the flag. I don't know why it bugs me, but it does. It's just so... pat and complete. Like these pirates got together and modeled their flag on their favorite sword.

I know that's nit-picking, but still...

Uggh, no. Trust me, you're not the only one. That's been bugging me since I first saw the new logo.

This may be the first time ever in life I've used this phrase, but in regards to above, here goes:

Cleaner ISN'T always better.

--------------------------------------

On another note, given the illustration style of this, the ship and the now-current Jaguars' logo, I wonder if we might be staring down a potential stylistic shift--a trend, if you will--in the way NFL logos are rendered, if not pro sports overall eventually.

I completely agree about the too polished look ruining it a little bit. Couple that with the illustration style shading and this looks more like a pirate themed Halloween decoration than a pirate sports logo.

So a skull rendered to please the eye with its symmetry is too far fetched? That's not normal?

It's not eye pleasing, though. The characteristics of the old one made it feel is if the flag was flowing in the wind with the banner. It looked almost as if it was charging forward, which gave the logo such a unique feel. The symmetry on this one just makes it look static and crooked.

My sentiments exactly. The previous Buccaneers logo - particularly the rendering of the skull and crossed swords - better captured the look of something that a 17th or 18th century pirate would have used.

Agree that the new one is too "pretty." I think it was Goth that said they lost the "treasure map" quality and that's a good way of putting it. Found this pic that even mimics the curve of the cutlass. The Bucs' flag should be more like this. I'm sure the reason is that they don't want any of the logo lost in the folds/creases but the old flag definitely looked better in that regard.

Look, you are fishing and I'm pretty sure you know that's not what I meant. I should have said "perfectly symmetrical". I preferred the old logo because if the way it was rendered without all of the shading and detail in the skull and swords. It lust felt more like pirate flag with its jagged lines and tattered look. Like others have pointed out, this new skull specifically has a "Terminator" feel to it. That style is a fine way to render a logo, but I don't think that style works for the Buccaneers.

but there was shading in the old logo, it was just black instead of silver, i really don't see what your problem is, and skulls are symmetrical

Whether skulls are symmetrical is besides the point, but when I said that I was thinking of the way a human skull will always have some imperfections and really are not perfectly. I was also referring to the way the shading on the skull is perfectly symmetrical from one side to another on a waving flag. I understand there was shading on the old logo, but but that style of shading is very different from the new logo and more accurately depicts the way the shadows would fall on a waving flag.

the shading would still be there on a waving flag it doesn't change, think of it this way, the logo was created with the shading, and then stitched onto a flag, the shading would always be on there in real life to, the skull and swords don't come out from the flag

I totally get that and understand what you are saying there, but I prefer the simpler skull and swords that was just black and white without the silver.

Just saw the new logo helmet.

Logos are fine. But you can go bigger without exagerating. I think the logos on helmets are too big. They could have gone bigger then the previous if they really wanted to without going that much.

They certainly made onfield camera tests to come with this and concluded it was the way to go but I suppose all tastes are in the nature.

Not sure other team will follow that path, size speaking.

I posted a link in post #1027 of this thread to the post where this was first shown. It shows that the logo could have been made larger without looking ridiculous. Did anyone ever say what the story was behind these helmets? The picture was first posted here last April but apparently these never saw the field.

422026_10151637457254595_845304899_n.jpg

... and they could have been a bit bigger then this without being sort of oversized, at least IMHO.

Thanks for the link.

Yes, but that imagery doesn't really help, since unlike the previous logo the skull and swords don't appear to actually be as stitched onto the flag as the old one.

The logo is so perfectly rendered that it appears superimposed upon the flag rather than being an actual part of it.
