A 1/3 of the way in, the Giants are up 6.5 in the division. There is no way that the Dodgers will go away quietly. The Giants have a run differential of +48, 2nd best behind the A's who are at a whopping +100.

Josh Collmenter of the Diamondbacks had a 27 batter complete game shutout against the Reds last night. Only the minimum 27 is a hell of a achievement.

Mark Buehrle had one back in 2004 against the Indians. He was perfect into the seventh, gave up a single, and got a double play. He did the same in his 2007 no-hitter. The only baserunner was a HBP, who was then picked off first. Of course, he had the perfect game in 2009. I think I remember hearing he is the only guy in history to have three complete games facing the minimum.

My favorite part is that it was Sammy Sosa who was hit then picked off.

I feel like we were just talking about national syndication a few weeks ago. Looks like the Cubbies just lost theirs.

So the Cubs have the worst record in baseball at the moment, and it's safe to say that no one is overly surprised by that. But here are some stats that would suggest that the Cubs should have a record better than 20-33:

-The Cubs' run differential is -9, which is better than the Rangers, Yankees, and most teams that are hovering around .500 at the moment.

-The Cubs' pitching staff (particularly the starting pitchers) has been excellent; the Cubs are top 10 in the MLB in team ERA, opponent batting average, WHIP, and fewest hits allowed. Most impressively, the Cubs have allowed the fewest home runs in all of baseball at 33.

Despite all that, at the end of the day the Cubs lose close games and are an all around poorly pieced together baseball team. The good run differential is a result of losing mostly close games and winning big on the rare occasions they do win, and the good pitching statistics are a result of the Cubs mostly losing low scoring games.

So there you have it: my annual overly analytic Cubs post. I think I'll shut up and step back into my pool of Cubs-induced tears now. :D

Why is it whenever the Rays and Red Sox play each other, the benches always clear?

Because games under 3 hours aren't allowed.
Dude Really?
Yeah, really. Lowest offensive production of the DH era and games take longer than ever. That's not a good thing. What part of that do you not understand? The average age of a 2013 World Series viewer was 55. Is that a positive stat? Games don't have enough action, and they take too long, dude.
