This rebrand is so subtle it's less like a brand overhaul and more like Cleveland just swapped out one of the Property Brothers.

The sole fact that Clevelans sells hats with helmets on them should have been reason enough alone for them to actually create a useful logo. I can never get over how absolutely terrible that looks.

It makes a strong case for the worst logo in all the major sports.

I do wish there was a logo for merch. Even though I weirdly like them because the idea of this hat makes me laugh and seems so half-assed, like they forgot to make a Browns hat then threw this together last minute when the other 31 teams had a logo on their hats. Plus the font is pretty generic so to a non-fan it's just a brown hat that says browns, which makes it even worse. If it was a team that wasn't named after a color, I think it wouldn't be as odd to see.

The more I see of the alt logo, the more bummed I get that they didn't fully embrace that. I think that if they had finished that mark and made it the primary, it could've been one of the best in sports. Sure a puppy is a different mascot, but it'd easily be the most unique in sports, and the NFL needs more quirky. It would've been a great tie in to the whole "New culture" they wanted to instill (that all losing teams blab about) and the "rebirth" of success! Or some Nike infused crap that still would've been less crap than Intensely Cleveland Orange they went with.

It's funny. I clicked on (and held on the mouse button) for the new 2015 helmet, and when you drag it, it creates a temporary, lighter color version of the image, and it's almost the same as the 2014 shade of orange.

Instead of alerting people that modified logos were coming out (yesterday). I agree that if if the Browns' Initial twitter message could have easily stated: "Enclosed are modified logos to reflect our new colors. New uniforms to be reveled in April". Then there is not as severe as a back-lash.

BUT.....

Another thing that really stands out is how lazy the word-mark is. The uneven brush strokes drive me crazy! The top "bar" of the B and the R are the same "Stoke" width. Then the O and the S are wider/thicker. For me, the top of the B R O S should be the same width. As should the bottom bar of the B O S. I would also raise the space in the R to be the same as the opening of the top space in the B.

How does this get through and not corrected? This is the freakin' NFL! I'm not a graphic designer... am I missing something? Is there a reason for this to be so sloppy?

Perhaps this has been mentioned, but why couldn't they use a helmet with a more modern mask for their logo? That facemask hasn't been worn in at least 20 years and it screams WLAF. This would have been an a much better option IMO....

While I agree that the helmet they picked for the logo is outdated a good amount of players still wear that helmet. Tom Brady wears the same exact helmet and face mask as the browns logo.

Helmets are changing every few years. The Riddell Revolution is phasing out, mainly only worn by linemen and Larry Fitzgerald, and while about 40-50% of the league is now wearing the Revo Speed, the Revolution 360 and now the SpeedFlex will be eating into that, and then in another 2-3 years, Riddell will come out with something new.

Schutt is up to almost 40% of the market share of players wearing their helmets, and just like Riddell, they keep changing. The ION 4D was a great helmet, but I don't think anyone is wearing it anymore; they're sticking with the AIR XP Pro, a great helmet with a traditional shell, while a few players are wearing the Revo Speed-wannabe Vengeance (Eli Manning).

Point is, a helmet used to be a helmet, but now, it's a product that will be redesigned, marketed, and sold every few years, just like cleats and gloves. To base your new logo off of a helmet shell design that will be obsolete in 5 years is pointless, so they stuck with the old-school, vintage illustration that's been standard for 30 or 40 years now.

Looking at the 2D version doesn't really translate the same because it's a different logo altogether.. You can't really argue that it's just a different angle of the same logo, because they're both 2D.. Anyway, I digress..

I wasn't pointing that out to be argumentative.. I was basically trying to give validity to the comment that it's a generic, stock helmet logo that isn't brand-specific. I think it's easy enough to argue either way, but with the obvious schutt-style facemask and lack of raised center crown strip, this could justifiably be identified as any of a number of classic helmet models. I think that's the basic point others have tried to make here as a reason to not update the helmet model in the logo update. I was just pointing out several clues that would suggest there are as many subtleties in the classic helmet logo that would point away from riddell as the ones that would point towards riddell..

Except it's not generic. It may not be exact (artistic license) but the graphic is clearly based off a riddell mask & helmet. The only reason why you think it's generic is because the riddell vsr4 was the most commonly worn helmet for 20+ years so it effectively became the default image that artists used. The mask was also clearly riddell. The shell shape on the underside that runs from the jaw to ear to neck is also clearly riddell, when compared to the smooth angular lines of a schutt shell from the era.

Compare David Archer (riddell) of the Sac Surge to Troy Aikman (schutt/bike) Ucla and it's not even close.

Archer: https://www.flickr.com/photos/gumballking/5403274116/in/set-72157625942616192

Aikman: http://image.cdnllnwnl.xosnetwork.com/pics33/800/AL/ALHVWCSQWGJSCPK.20131114054100.jpg

If you take some time to actually scrutinize the two images, there's really no doubt.

Bottom line that helmet graphic is a relic of an ugly 80's helmet style. If they truly wanted to go with a generic helmet they should go back another two decades or so.

Look, when I played I worse a Schutt (and I hated it). Other players wore Riddell. There were small difference (no neck bumper, no center piece), but for the most part they looked extremely similar, to the point that on a team with helmet stripes, most people wouldn't notice a difference. There are huge differences between all the helmets now, not just between brands but among helmets from the same company. Also, you can say that graphic was based on '80s helmets, but the majority of players wore helmets that looked like those as recently as a decade ago. So that old graphic, even if it was a specific Riddell helmet, represented "what football helmets look like." That graphic is just as relevant today, as it represents what helmets should look like if not for the companies putting in nooks and crannies to brand them.

I am going to miss helmets like Murrays...Round ear holes look so good.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

That's not quite true. On Brady's mask, the two bars are closer to each other (the middle bar is closer to the top). Riddell did design a mask EXACTLY like the mask in the Browns logo, but it was last worn by football playerse in the early 90s.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

I think more teams should adopt helmet logos that contradict the color in their team name:
