GotPixels
Feedback is welcomed as this is the beginning of a process to do my own overhaul of the Browns. Going Double Orange with a bonafied primary.
keithisgood
I'm a fan of your work here on the board, but this one to me is a swing and a miss. Remove the Concept pictures and the collar, and the logo we're left with doesn't say "bulldog" to me. The mouth shape is off, the cheek contour looks squirrel-ish, and the eyes look upturned and half-closed. The logo looks alien-ish to me. As for fixes, its hard to say. Bulldog logos have (surprisingly) been done quite a bit and you probably don't want to ape UGA, Fresno State, or the existing Browns Bulldog. Perhaps try using the collar as a circular frame around the head? And I should say you're probably on the right path trying to make it look more photorealistic than cartoonish. As to the color scheme with dual oranges, It's difficult for me to critique using this concept art. Since the logo doesn't work for me, my reaction is to say the color scheme doesn't work. However, in a different application, i could see the dueling oranges working really well. GotPixels
Thanks Keith. This what I'm looking for. Real critique. This is my first swing at this process. Actually, this is the first time that I have really focused on taking a sketch to Illustrator and working it. I'm terrible with eyes and I agree with you. You're right about not wanting to look like the others which is why I ventured down this path. Hopefully I will get this one right. If this were baseball I'd still have 4 balls and 2 strikes to go. Thanks again.
derschwigg
You've got the right idea, but there's a few things off in the execution.A Bulldog is known for it's stout stature. The lines on the cheeks merge with the snout and make it look more sunken-in and malnourished than big and bulky. That said, bulldogs also tend to have a very short neck - if you look in your reference photo, you see how the collar is more of a circle/hoop than a band around the neck? The perspective is a little off in your logo. If you match that perspective a bit better, you can beef up the collar and the rhinestones while still using the Browns B Football as more of a dogtag. You've done a good job incorporating the wrinkles into the face, but some of them get to such a fine point that they lose their impact a little bit. It's a bulldog - it's ok to be a little bold with the linework Look at this guy! I found this photo for two reasons: the eyes and the snout. The placement of the eyes is nearly on level with the top of the nose. If you make the eyes bigger, nudge them down and tweak the brow a tad to make him seem more aggressive, I think you're there. If I were you, I'd rework the snout almost entirely - I'm sorry if this comes across as mean, I don't mean it to. The red-orange outlined in black just isn't doing it for me, and the lips are oddly geometric. It might look better done just in all black, but as it is right now, it's reading a bit more Predator-style mandible than it is bulldog. You could also throw it the iconic underbite the breed is known for. You've got a great start. Now finish it!
jdp
I preface this by saying I am on my phone and cannot enlarge the images much. So if this CC is unfair, I apologize. Keith is right about the eyes. I would use what you sketched. For me, above all else, this would change the dynamics of the bulldog. He looks indifferent right now. The contours of the cheeks look like they are overlapping the jowls. It should be the other way around. The lips...? Is that what they'd be called? I don't know bulldog anatomy well enough. Either way, the orange jutting down from the nose. I'm not entirely sure what to do with those. But, the first thing I noticed was they're the only part of the actual bulldog (other than teeth and shading/wrinkles) that comes to a point. Lastly, and this could be because I'm on my phone, the shadow under the mouth actually looks like it's supposed to be the mouth. And therefore is just a black hole. GotPixels
All great feedback. This project for me is about trying to make a weakness a strength. To be fair, I'm not what you'd call an illustrator. The critique you guys are giving is not considered mean by my standards at all. I had courage enough to put it out there, so it's obvious I want and need direction to get better. Keep it coming and I will get back to the drawing board literally. JRB14
I'm sorry if this comes off as rude, because it's not meant to be rude, and I'm a big fan of your work and this project itself. Now, getting that out of the way, two things I noticed were that the dogs eyes make it look like its going on the lawn, and maybe that's what you were going for. It fits the Browns quite well now that I think about it. The crown shaped teeth, at least, if that's what you were going for, don't fit the Browns or Cleveland. Now that that criticisms out of the way, I'll move onto the stuff that didn't catch my eye immediately: the snout shape looks weird, particularly the red and black areas. The black looks as though the mouth is open, and I'm not quite sure what the red on the snout is all about, although if I had a better idea of what it was, it may change my perspective. Also, the overall shape is a bit off, along with the collar. Bulldogs are known to be big and fat, so don't be afraid to make yours big and fat Your collar doesn't sit right on the bulldogs neck, either.EDIT: seattlesonicsofsacramento said below that he's a fan of the alternate being used as the tag, I forgot to say that I was a fan of that myself. On that note, I hope that my comments weren't rude, either, because they weren't supposed to be. I'm a big fan of your work, including this, and there's a reason you don't find my concepts on here, because they could never hold a candle to some of the others on here, including yours. seattlesonicsofsacramento
Not a fan of the dawg illustration like most other people, but that criticism's been covered I think. Just wanted to say I love the idea of using the <=B=> alt logo on a collar. The collar itself seems a little loose-fitting, which I think could be better justified if it was tilted so that it was at least resting on one side of the neck and not magically suspended in space. Also, is that black or a really dark brown? If it's the former, why not just go with the latter?
ThePeam
GP I think this logo looks a little forced. It's a little complex and I think you need a little less detail. Of course I'm not saying this logo is bad but I think, like the Boise Stangs , I think you can do much better.

Guest darkpiranha
Sorry if this comes off as rude, but if this is an example of your work, you should just stop trying to make logos. I KEEEDING! However, I do agree with all of the critiques above. But you're great at incorporating feedback, so I anticipate version 2 of this logo will be 90% better. As an out-in-left-field suggestion, how about instead of a straight bulldog, it's a beefy guy wearing a bulldog mask? To be honest, I associate those uberfans with the Browns more than I do an actual bulldog. Or... what about a bulldog wearing an orange football helmet? (I'm always going to have crazy Browns ideas because out of the entirety of sports, the Browns entire branding drives me nuts, and I think even Mr. Design Junkie's uniform ideas would be a welcome change.) keithisgood
Ha! A Dawg-Pound-guy logo could be great. As to a dog wearing a helmet, Cleveland's sportsnation site already has that. It's whelming. Could just be cruddy design, though.
hugevolsfan
GP I think the bulldog looks good except in the mouth area where it loses the bold lines that the rest of the logo has. Make some bolder lines there & I think you will start to get where you want.
GotPixels
Thanks everyone for the feedback, opinions, etc. It motivates me for sure. So to continue the baseball theme that Keith started in his post. I have an 0-1 count and the second pitch is on it's way to the plate. Let me know if this is swinging strike, a strike looking, a ball, hit by pitch. single, double, triple, Homerun, well you get what I mean.
JRB14
I'd say double for me. While you've nailed the top part, (with the exception of the nose, something happened in photoshop, but obviously it's not part of the design) the mouth, jaw and collar seem off. It's most definitely better, but not up to par with what you have done before. Also, I think a good idea might be to make the collar wrap around the top of his neck to the bottom, I think this will give it a more realistic look. A lot like your bottom logos on the second ''swing'', only with a tighter collar(the one used in the first logo, second try would work great) that forms to his neck would perfect the collar itself. I'm sorry, but I don't know how to improve the mouth, exactly. I'm relatively new to this, so I'm doing what I can, however I understand that it probably won't be enough.Tonnes better than the first crack at it. Great job. davidmiller5
Good job on your second attempt. I'm not a designer or artist, so I won't give any helpful feedback in those areas, but I did also want to mention that the collar doesn't really work. To me, it looks like a bulldog head is being served on a thick platter a la John the Baptist. (Though that may be a fitting analogy for the Browns, I doubt their logo would want to reflect that.)The bottom logos look better, but I think the points on the roundel should be minimized (shortened). It reminds me more of a ship's helm (steering wheel) more than a collar.Keep tinkering; it's getting a lot better.

sparkychewbarky
O.K....You got a piece of the heater, but it was a foul-tip.The good news is that this was a better swing, and now you've got a better feel of what you need to do.Step out of the box and re-assess.The dawg is improved, but the front jowls still look as if they're overlapped by a second pair of ears at the sides.Bring the lines of the jowls "forward", ahead of the 2 thick cheekbone lines. Also, flip the 2 thick cheekbone lines so they look like this... ( ) rather than this... ) ( .Have them disappear in behind the front jowls.See how these adjustments work for ya'.You might need a couple of "at-bats" before you hit this one out of the park...But you know it's gonna happen! GotPixels
Appreciate it Sparky. So reset in the box for my next at bat with your C&C. I added a nose as well because I thought it looked strange one color.
