MLS Commissioner Don Garber Labels Qatar World Cup A "Monumental Disaster"

Recommended Posts

Don Garber pulled no punches while addressing the 2014 IMG World Congress of Sports on Wednesday.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber yesterday said the decision to award Qatar the '22 FIFA World Cup and the potential that the event may have to move from summer to winter because of weather was a "monumental disaster" for soccer worldwide. He added that he hopes the event is moved. "We certainly would be happy to host it here and have a lot of big stadiums that could turn it around and host on very short notice," said Garber, who spoke on the opening panel of the '14 IMG World Congress of Sports. "But we're going to be on the sidelines on this and hope that FIFA can resolve this in a way that is good for the sport."

FIFA just opened preliminary proceedings into corruption and collusion of the 2022 World Cup bidding process as well as the voting process. There are allegations of bribery of senior FIFA officials before the voting by the FIFA Executive Council. I am hoping this farce is finally brought to light, the crooks and frauds are brought to justice, and the 2022 World Cup is awarded to one of the other two bidders from that year.

My favorite part of the Qatar bid is the part about how the country will be cooled by solar-powered air conditioning that hasn't been invented yet.

Great stuff here. Five-part series. Read it all.

Don't you all get it? FIFA is going all "NBA/Seattle/Sacramento" on the 2022 WC.

They had the potential to bank more money nominally with the United States because of all the developed stadiums already in tact here, with the advertisers in place, and with the generally-median climate in American cities during the summer (compared with the potential of 120-130°F summer days in Qatar). But of course, the whole bid and its aftermaths FIFA encountered-on with Qatar had more-to-do with wanting to exploit impoverished and menial-class citizens of the host country in the pursuit of greed.

Which would be better, moving it to winter and the Euro teams telling them to F off, or keeping it in the summer and moving it to the US?

Moving it to the US, surely. Media exposure, opportunity to boost the game in a still-developing market, infrastructure well in place. Who knows? If NYCFC builds their park big enough they could host a marquee game.

Fifa members taking backhanders. Nothing new there then. Everyone knows that corruption at Fifa starts from the top with Sepp Blatter.

Or they could just have it at MetLife Stadium. I figure all of the games would be played in NFL or college stadiums.

The Gold Medal game? Surely. But it would be good to get a high-profile match held in NYC itself.

As for football stadiums, I don't know about that.

Moving it to the US and hosting it in the summer would be better than the current situation. Most of the FIFA World Cup sponsors are based in the US, the infrastructure including stadiums, air ports, major commute systems are already in place but require some "minor" upgrading, the temperatures here in North America are a lot more tolerable than the 120-130 degrees F in the Middle East. Take it from me, I worked in the UAE during the summer months and it is the most unbearable you will ever think.

The best on this was BBC Panorama investigation - FIFA's Dirty Secrets. It was a good episode to watch.

Sorry for the Spanish subtitles

Looks like Russia and Qatar might be getting axed for different locations. It's as ifthis Brazil chaos hasn't been enough of a wake-up for these FIFAidiots, and both Russia and Qatar will (most likely) be a much higher up-hill battle for both FIFA and the rest of the world to deal with.

USA/Canada should host in either 2018 or 2022.

What about the England

Well, if Russia's removed as 2018 host, England would be a natural to be the replacement.

I highly doubt Canada will host so soon after hosting the Women's World Cup next year. I honestly think that the US hosting the men's and women's Cups five years apart in the 90s was an abberation.
