Golden State Considering Name Change to "San Francisco Warriors"

Recommended Posts

True story, one of my childhood basketball teams was known as Golden State Warriors, it was just named that way because the team manager liked how it sounded.

If it were up to me, I'd go with San Francisco Bay Warriors. It's keeps San Francisco in the brand name, but still claims the entire region.

pretty sure someone would alter that name to have some fun

That name-change would be great. "Golden State" is an embarassingly poor location name, and always has been. Even as a regional team, the simple state name "California Warriors" would have been much better.

A few years ago, the Warriors even brought out an "SF" letter logo:

That's a good idea for the concept of claiming "San Francisco", even if the logo is a bit simple, having no interlocking and no bridge imagery (which would have raised the question of which bridge to use). Though I am not fond at all of the "Est. 1962" bit. I am always a big supporter of franchise identity and franchise continuity; and this franchise goes back to the first season of the NBA's predecessor league the BAA in 1946-47 -- a fact which they should want to emphasise, especially with the club's 70th season about to begin.

If this name-change were to happen only a few years after the return of the name "Miami Marlins", that would make a nice little trend.

The Superior Part of California Warriors.

Meh, I prefer Golden State, as it's a brand in and of itself. If you say "Golden State's doing blah blah" people already know you're talking about the NBA team. instant identification and branding.

And yea, "San Francisco" dismisses the Oakland-area fans, imo.

No. That makes even less sense than Golden State. Its a contradiction in a few ways. First off, the arena would be on the opposite side of the city from the Golden Gate, and if it refers to the bridge it's even more confusing considering the logo uses the BAY Bridge, not the Golden Gate Bridge.

They're returning to San Francisco. Why are people upset over the name change? It's logical.

Golden State

San Francisco

That's only one extra letter.

1. The Warriors' uniforms don't really require the city name to be present, and if they do, the font is small enough to negate length.

2. Even if they want the "San Francisco" words to show up on their own, it's been done before and looked fine.

Also, OKC could have done something like this for their road uniform (obviously in their colors and with a much better looking font):

I'm all for the "San Francisco" name change, even if "Golden State" sounds unique (a relic of travel teams).

Serious question - is there still enough equity in the name "Warriors" to make any notion of changing it and starting fresh a silly idea?

I'm not a hardcore sports fan so I don't really know how relevant they currently are in today's NBA, but even when I was more in to it, they weren't really anything special since Chris Mullen.

What is it with Oakland letting former Philadelphia "marquee" teams drift away into obscurity?

Don't like this "Bay Area Warriors" idea. I know San Francisco Bay is the most popular one in the U.S., but there are other bay areas all over the country. For example, there is a part of Houston known as the "Bay Area" (from Galveston Bay) where Mission Control is located.

I'd say so. They're on the upswing, it's a good sports team name.

As for the name being too long on jerseys, that's hardly a concern if you think about how their jerseys are designed.
