California Chrome wins the 2014 Kentucky Derby

Recommended Posts

Anybody watched the Kentucky Derby?

I did watch it,missing a couple of minutes of the Pacers-Hawks Game 7 watching the 2014 Kentucky Derby.

The favorite California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby,2nd was 17 Commanding Curve and 3rd was 4 Dansa.

When I saw California Chrome get in the lead,I knew he was gonna win it.When he came towards the finish I was hopping up and down and like "Yea! California Chrome is gonna win it!"

I had picked California Chrome to win the Kentucky, but possibly now the Triple Crown.

Definitely cool to see an animal come out of Coalinga that didn't end up on a dinner plate.

Some former co-workers of mine are part owners of Commanding Curve. When I saw about half way thru the race that he was second-to-last, I figured what the heck it was a nice try. Then at the wire I realize #17 is right there in 2nd. Kinda wish i dropped $20 bucks to Place, would've netted me about $300.

The Derby's coverage is actually pretty incredible. It's something like 3 or 4 hours long of just absolute :censored: . 100% pageantry, absurd fashion, $1000 mint julips, private airfields, tiny imp-jockeys, and fat, cigar-puffing owners. Throw in a few thousand large hats, a bunch of wasted celebrities, and the most flamboyant gay man east of the Mississip', and it's basically E!SPN.

Oh yeah, there's a horse race in there too that lasts all of 90 seconds and means precisely nothing.

I did enjoy the random shots of Bob Costas posing around Churchill Downs.

You could make the same argument about the Super Bowl, actually. In terms of minutes spent on coverage, the Derby has about 3 hours of lead-in before the 2 minute race. Likewise, the Super Bowl has about 19 hours of lead-in before 60 minutes of play.

It's pretty much all major championship level sporting events. I always get a kick out of the completely nonsense celebrity interviews they do with has-been stars who are largely unqualified morons in the field of choice (let's ask Kanye West about comparing California Chrome to Big Brown!).

I actually missed the Preakness. But I saw that California Chrome won.

Are you guys ready for Belmont?

The horse has had six consecutive wins wearing a nasal strip, the equine version of a Breath-Right. It is not allowed in New York. The same rule forced "I'll Have Another" to be scratched in 2012.

Plus there still is the distance and that Belmont has the shortest frontstretch of the three tracks, so straight line speed is compromised

If California Chrome pulls out it will kill the Belmont, and NYRA better rethink the ban on the breathe right strips.

NYRA does not regulate racing, not does it make the rules of racing.

All NYRA does is operate the three race tracks: Belmont, Saratoga, and Aqueduct and employ the race steward who must follow state gaming law.

The New York Gaming Commission is the body who creates the rules and regulates the sport. Still, three stewards will rule to allow a nasal strip if the owner and trainer for California Chrome applies to the state to use one. The three stewards at Belmont Park – New York State Steward Stephen Lewandowski, Dr. Ted Hill, who represents the Jockey Club and Braulio Baeza Jr, who represents the NYRA, would then have to vote on it to see if they will allow it or not.

And FWIW, the following place horses from the Kentucky Derby didn't run yesterday at Pilmico in the Preakness: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. They were saved for a possible Belmont entry.

Yeah but this sport needs a Triple Crown. If it is not even attempted than you might as well end it.

No it doesn't. There are ways to bet and there are two cable channels (TVG and HRTV).

A parent can take their kids to see the horses any day of the week, and so can NJTank. For whatever reason, you choose not to go and a Triple Crown winning horse not going to make the general public visit local track in the next month, since that horse ain't going on tour.

The next 3-year old which wins the Triple Crown will be retired, never to race again not to hurt its legacy, most likely sold (to the Japanese or someone in Dubai) and would live the great live of being a stud. That does not assist racing.

It is a pretty cheaper cover charge for mom and dad to drink as opposed to even MiLB and people still don't go. A day at the track is slower than baseball, thus why they want casino style games.

The Derby is first in line and still has the allure of it being what it is (some of it questionable regarding its Southern Gentility) so it gets coverage.

The Preakness gave is the ill-fated Kegasus and this year had an infield concert of Lorde, Nas, Frank Walker and Switchfoot

All it needs is a horse to win both the Derby and the Preakness, thus there is greater interest in the Belmont.

While I bet on it every October/November (and attended twice), there is more money bet in the Breeder's Cup and little of the sport fanbase cares when great horses run past the age of 3.

Given the vote being unanimous, this proved how the people running Belmont didn't want to be portrayed as the villans to California Chrome. What officials there didn't want was to be the pretentious, rule-abiding douchelords who disqualified a horse from running because of silly and tedious rules which had the possibility to deter people from spending money at the racetrack.

I didn't even get what all the ruckus was all about to begin with. If a horse's breathing strip functioned similarly to a human's, then all it lets in is a teeny bit of excess air to help the horse. The NYSGC and NYRA were literally on the verge of terminating a chance at a horsing triple crown over $10 (cost of a strip), but we're all glad they didn't.
