Is Brown For The Padres Really a Popular Opinion?

Recommended Posts

Rush sucks.

Nobody...and I mean NOBODY, with any sort of ability to see the big picture wants brown back in San Diego.

The Padres could "own" the color brown in MLB? Yipee!!!!!! The Cleveland Browns "own" the color brown in football. How are they faring in merchandise sales? They don't even wear their brown uniforms at home.

Brown=poo

Brown=dirt

Hipsters won't even think that's cool for more than a week or so.

I'm pretty sure the Padres are selling more brown throwback merch than their current stuff. Can anyone confirm this?

I too would love to know. When I'm down there I definitely see more brown worn but maybe my eye just catches it more than the blue. And I know from friends from my generation (40 somethings) there is a definite bias toward the brown.

Teams don't like to release those numbers, but some inferences can be drawn from their actions. In the case of the Brewers, they offer more and more BiG merchandise every year, which tells you something. It sure seems like the Padres keep expanding their throwback merch, but perhaps someone can quantify that.

True that I cannot quantify but it really feels like thr BiG is far more popular in Milwaukee. And the Brewers use it a lot in promotion...on the Admirals jerseys and even on WI Brewers plates.

I do not think the Padres are ambiguous like that and my sense is their base is not as tilted to the "old"...probably because brown is more polarizing.

ButI would love to see merch sales, both overall and at the ballpark (in theory indicating fan base as opposed to people like me; I have a late 80s brown cap).

I looked at last season's Padres home games on MLB's website. I saw way more navy in the crowd than brown. Not even close to the throwback ratio you'll see in a Brewers crowd. Maybe it has something to do with availability also. Idk.

Even so the fact that the Brewers wear theirs often and promote themselves with it is probably important.

I'd say it has a lot to do with availability. You can buy a $10 navy Padre cap at Walmart but I've never seen a brown one there. So, if you want brown, you have to search it out and then pay top dollar. If you just want a Padre cap of any sort, the navy is the easiest and cheapest to find.

Again, I think it's availability of reasonably priced gear. I'm a huge sports fan but would never buy anything from the team shop at a stadium since I know I'd be paying +/- 25% more. I may be wrong but brown Padre gear doesn't seem to be on the shelves at the Wamarts, Targets, etc. that would typically have the more reasonably priced items.

So when you see half the fans at Brewers and Phillies home games with throwback gear on, they are all getting that stuff from Walmart and Target? I don't even those places have much throwback gear available for any of those teams, if at all. I could be wrong, but I think most of them are gettin that stuff from the stadium shop and online.

I don't know this as I don't go to Wal Mart (or any stores) in Wisconsin, but I would not be suprised at all if Target, WalMart, etc. have BiG Brewer stuff. I'd guess the Brewers probably lead MLB in throwback "accessibility."

When I worked for Lids in Southern California we carried a big selection of Padres gear, and a HUGE chunk of it was the brown throwback gear. We ordered the throwback gear because it was so popular and almost always outsold the current navy and white gear.

Rumor that they want to bring the red back to San Diego.... http://www.gaslampball.com/2014/12/29/7465143/the-padres-are-finally-bringing-back-the-red

Because, sure, why stand out--and more importantly, look good doing it--when you can wear the same colors as about half of the other MLB teams? :rolleyes:

EDIT: In the comments section #sources say the Padres aren't changing for 2015. Also to note that most changes would have been released in November/December. Another #source mentions that the Padres are testing logo/uniform colors like red, gold, yellow, and yes, brown, FWIW.

What another disaster that would be (red, gold, yellow, brown). Fitting for the organization though. If going that way though, just be USC and go burgundy and yellow and call it a day.

The way I read it, I don't think those colors were all mutually inclusive.

But a Burgundy/Yellow look would be one of the better looks from the go-in-a-different-direction-and-come-up-with-something-good-anyways department (a la the Dallas Stars and no gold), though it wouldn't help solidify the Padres' historical identity.

That actually looks like a good basis for a great sports identity. At least that doesn't look like the :ah-hem: fecal matter brown that the Padres used to wear.

This "Padres in red/white/blue" idea keeps popping up from time to time. I think the Padres org. wants it, and have been dropping hints about it. Owner Ron Fowler has said that he likes the "possible patriotic appeal", and exec Wayne Partello alluded to it being "the original color scheme". I think that is where they are headed in 2016.

I mean, Lord knows if an American city has a military installation in town, the sports teams should reflect that American pride, shouldn't they? It just makes sense, doesn't it?

Also, if a team like the Padres were once the farm club for a navy and red team like the Cleveland Indians in the late 40's ('49-'51 and again in '57-'59), and the Cincinnati Reds from '62-'65 ( red with navy trim at the time), it would make perfect sense that today, this California team should go back to those glory days and wear Navy and Red like they did then, and pay further homage to their former parent clubs in Ohio, right? It's just a no-brainer!!!! ;)

Those are good, but I'd prefer they don't go with pinstripes. First off, pinstripes are very thin, and surrounded by thick white, they can be drowned out and made to look black no matter what color they are (see: Rockies' purple pinstripes). Secondly, I think you have to walk a fine like with brown in keeping it classy. You don't want to want to do too much rocking the boat with brown. Although pinstripes are a very traditional element, I think they might be "too much" for a color like brown.
