2014 NFL Season Thread

Recommended Posts

Roughing the passer has devalued the game to a point where you can't even enjoy a good sack without thinking, 'When is the flag coming in?"

Really. I'm totally for player safety, but RTP is an absolutely absurd penalty anymore because it is so arbitrary and really is changing games and seasons.

My solution (if there even is one) is to err on the side of not throwing the flag (so only throw it if it's obvious) but then increase the level of punishment that can be given after the league reviews the tapes. Same with helmet-to-helmet and other total judgement calls that don't directly impact yardage (meaning for example PI, which is kind of arbitrary, but yards are involved so you need to have a decision on the spot.) There would be fewer penalties, but maybe bigger fines or even suspensions. My guess is that there really wouldn't be, because no reasonable person can see these supposed infractions and say that they're even worth 15 yards let alone $500K let alone a game check.

They could go the NCAA route and go to a video review when it comes to these kinds of plays. The NCAA calls it "Targeting"...not sure if the NFL has something similar.

There was a play where Matt Ryan was smacked hard by a Steelers player, but it was a clean play (to me). The O-lineman missed a block and the D-End pretty much got a free run on the QB and led with the shoulder (not the head) to the chest.

i'm all for reply on things like that. I can't believe it's gotten to the point where we are at now where some of these things are considered penalties. Anything to make the game more legitimate is worth it to me - because anymore, they could just be using these arbitrary things to control outcomes.

Joe Staley is probably the most useless lineman I've ever seen play football. His stupid holding penalties have cost the Niners two TDs tonight, and his lack of any effort whatsoever basically just gave San Diego another touchdown.

The cherry on top is complete. I know I sound like a broken record, but what is it with playing in the Silicon Valley and just flat out choking to opponents? This is similar to 2010, the team played way less then the sum of their parts.

Everyone in Buffalo will be big Steelers fans for the next two weeks. By my tinkering with the Playoff Machine, the best shot for the Bills in the playoffs seems to be the Steelers winning out. Of course, the Bills will have to win in Gillette Stadium in Week 17, something that they have never done. Considering they have played there every year it's been open, that's pretty impressive/sad.

Haha lemme guess, this one is somehow Colin Kaepernick's fault too, right?

There were a couple plays on the 49ers' next-to-last drive in the 4th quarter that could be pinned on Kaepernick. The one that sticks out was him running out of bounds on 3rd down when he could have stayed in bounds and either run 35 seconds off the clock or make the Chargers burn a timeout.

the fan atmosphere at Levi's Stadium is so dull and quiet for a $1+ billion stadium.

That's the point. That's like saying "big for an elephant." They priced out the cholos, the goobers, and any middle-class people who fall short of the vultures and vampires who populate the Bay's armpit.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Well, at least for tonight, you're argument is invalid (with comparison to the Sharks not being able to close out opponents. [see Sharks vs St. Louis] :D )

Yeah, I get that. And on that play I actually agree with you. But trying to pin this game on him, as many Niners fans are trying to do (and always do) is nuts. This team has so many problems, yet people try to oversimplify it by blaming the whole thing on Kaepernick.

Dude has struggled mightily this season, there's no doubt about that. But the way people have turned on him just defies any sense of logic.

The guy is an athlete but I don't know if he'll ever be a good QB. I've said that once he took over as the starter.
