I like the socks, but I really think navy shorts with yellow stripes would have elevated this.

I think this look is pretty good. Apparently someone who has seen the kit on Twitter mentioned that the checkers don't go all over. Could be a wide panel like your mock-up, or a gradation like this one (the collar will look different for sure).
