So Glendale (not to mention the NHL) believes from the bottom of their hearts, that having a team in Phoenix is more important than breathing, they gambled away tons of money, along with the jobs of many civil workers, to keep the team afloat...in Phoenix. It's a stupid idea, but you know I have to give them credit for trying to support a team. And I like to thank the heroes at Goldwater for taking action this morning. GO GET 'EM BOYS! (AND GIRLS!)

It has been reported on Yahoo! Sports NHL section that the Glendale City Council has approved a preliminary budget that includes $17 million to be paid to the prospective buyer of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes for operating costs for the city's Jobing.com Arena. Surprise, surprise! It appears from what I'm understanding that it boils down to playing with monopoly money, since they technically didn't have $17 million, so they lay off dozens of civil workers in order to raise the money. As for Greg Jamison being a "potential" owner, I'm not saying he's not a fit owner. I'm saying is that he doesn't know what he's getting himself into. If he buys the team, will they stay in Phoenix? Rightly so. For a year at most. One owner can save a team from financial ruins and bring them to financial success. Not the case here, especially in Glendale's situation and the team's fiscal woes, not to mention our heroes from the Goldwater Institute breathing down his neck. Guaranteed he'll lose money in his first year, if the sale goes through. Other than that, I'd say he has his work cut out for him.

Well said! Myself, all I want is an NHL team back in Quebec City where it truly belongs. And Goldwater Institute can open the door for that.

It's funny that I remember when I was in grade school, they were talking about the Blues moving to Saskatoon. That was back in the early 80's. For a team that's been a mainstay in the league since the expansion era, given their track record in the playoffs, I can see how they could fall on hard times for that long. No, there wasn't. Not outside fanwank message boards. I was kidding about the Dodgers. That was the joke. I should have said the Yankees, who seem as likely to move as the Coyotes, since Bettman's willing to spend his owners' money indefinitely rather than admit a mistake. My bad.

The Dodgers were already bought by Magic Johnson and co. They were probably be staying put regardless, however there was some talk about not only moving the team, but disbanding it, because of the previous owner's legal issues that was holding up MLB. To me that is laughable, since I've hated the Dodgers for over 30 years. The Kings, however, yeah they will stay. The Maloofs wanted a new arena built in Sacramento, but they feel the mayor was being a dick to them, and they wanted to go elsewhere, unless they worked with somebody else. But it looks like they're past that. I for one hope they stay, but if they don't, there are 2 or 3 good markets that are available, and one of them isn't Anaheim. If I were to put those three teams in a specific order, the top team being the most likely to move, it would be Coyotes, Kings and Dodgers.

I was never worried about the Blues. They were probably going to be sold to a local owner anyway. That's a good thing. The Blues, even though they had little success in the post-season in many years, have always been a part of St. Louis.

I'm just worried that, and I'm not trying to knock the fans in Phoenix for this, is that the deeper they go in the playoffs, sellout or not, the Coyotes would be dramatically inclined to stay in Phoenix for next season, and the season after that. That way no matter how much money the city has leftover, the city government would either pony up by selling their houses, cars, timeshares and what-not, just to keep the team there all from the goodness of their hearts, or let Jamison be persuaded to actually get his wish and buy the team so they can stay. This sounds like an ending to a Hollywood movie, doesn't it? If you think it is, you're right. After reading the articles on this thread, I'm still not convinced the city of Glendale actually HAS more money to blow off, or if Mr. Jamison is actually the savior of Phoenix. All I know is that the great folks at Quebecor is ready and willing to pay top dollar for the Coyotes. They have the money, they have the investors, and most of all they have the plans to build the arena, which according to my calculations is 5 months away. Plus Quebec City wants NHL hockey, and lots of it. I'm sure Glendale wants it too, but they just can't afford it. Which reminds me, the Goldwater Institute is also a major player. They have the power to tell Glendale upon raising taxes to fund the team some more, "Not so fast!" I don't know what goes on in Glendale because I don't live there, but I sympathize with the taxpayers if they have to pay more money towards a hockey team they just don't have the passion to watch. If you recall how many fans showed up last season at a rally outside the arena to save the Coyotes? Not even close to 300, or 500. Lucky for them, they weren't the ones that moved to Winnipeg. It was Atlanta, which I thought had a good chance at staying. I'm neither a politician, nor a financial expert, but that was my two cents.

It sounds to me like raising the money between Jamison and Glendale to keep the team in Phoenix is like them two trying to raise the Titanic.

I can't wait till the NHL finally returns to Quebec. It's well overdue!
