A franchise they have no ties to from a city they don't play in? Maybe in 10 years when we've reached NBA levels of scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas then we can try that.

I mean if you want to get technical, that's precisely what the Sharks did this round.

The Barons branding was very Ohio-forward and the Blue Jackets seek to market to the entire state. It's not a massive stretch.

    Two things:

    1. rumblings are that they're going to be going with the cannon look full time with a matching white sweater in the next season or two so that might be why they didn't do that.

    2. The original third jersey used black* so that's how they got away with it here.

    *and it looked dynamite

I was hoping they would just flip around the navy and black parts, but nope, too easy. It's a let down.

If Columbus was well and truly stuck with respect to what to do based on their upcoming plans, it seems unfathomable that they wouldn't look to adapt some aspect of a Cleveland Barons jersey for RR 2.0. Complete missed opportunity.

I'm in the camp that the alternate MNF theme is better than Heavy Action. Heck, I use it as the intro song for doing games at my local high school.

For my contribution, I feel like almost every national NHL theme song somehow someway slaps, and one that didn't deserve to slap as hard as it did was the NHL on OLN/Versus theme before they went with that forgettable one for 2010-2011. Clearly the entire budget for the first season of coverage went to paying the music company

I mean, there's no way you're convincing me this wasn't a track off a Castlevania game soundtrack.

  4. The press conference currently going on confirms that IU Indianapolis (presented with no hyphen) will be the name and that there will be a task force to study athletics, but the intention is for IU to absorb the athletic operations rather than Purdue and to remain in the Horizon League.

Purdue sounds like they're imagining their continued presence essentially to be Purdue Community College, feeding into West Lafayette.

I like the jersey script but I think I like the darker blue the jersey appeared to be in a pic that leaked a few weeks ago, I’d prefer navy trim to white too. The powder blue is wearing out its welcome with the CC uniforms for me, plus I don’t really like it with white pants. Go all in and rock the blue pants if you’re gonna hop on the powder train, same goes for KC too. I’m not crazy about the cap logo but I imagine it will be popular with the denizens of Milwaukee.

While the powder blue is trendy, in this case it likely draws from the city's official (mess of a) flag, or the much more popular People's Flag of Milwaukee.

  6. An additional strike against Springfield as one of the relocation sites is that the MGM Casino is moving into town, and has already announced a partnership with the MassMutual Center (where the Falcons play) and has sponsored the Falcons since 2012. The partnership proposal states that MGM commits to an additional three-year sponsorship post-opening of the casino.

That's not to say that such a proposal couldn't be transferred to an ECHL team, but it does give some insight as to why a lower attendance number is less of a worry in Springfield than in other places.

  7. From what I understand, the Checkers' move will also ensure a better selection of prime weekend dates, which is critical for the health and survival of any minor-league hockey team (particularly one that exists in a market with another major league winter sport). The city and club are sinking a bunch of money into renovations, and it's seen as a homecoming - it's the original Charlotte Coliseum that has been the home for hockey in Charlotte since the 50s.

  8. So the Glendale council met last night to consider Renaissance's pitch for how they've found $9.5 million more in revenues to share to move the arena management subsidy from $6.5 million to $15 million. The response was, shall we say, underwhelming? Alvarez walked out.

The important information is that there doesn't seem to be the momentum and will to get a vote on this before the NHL's benchmark date of 27 June. Who blinks first?

  9. City of Glendale passed the budget in a whirlwind meeting, with Sherwood (the guy touting the mystery buyer) being one of two votes against. 6.5M for arena management. They've narrowed to two finalists for arena management in the meantime, RSE being neither.

Meanwhile, a plane departs from Teeterboro to Quebec City, stopping for 45 minutes or so then headed to Portland ME.

  10. I also wonder how the NHL being in Glendale affects the NBC deal in any way. If they require a certain level of market, yet never choose to show that market, it's a wash. Unless it's solely the NBA kind of "Oh no not San Antonio and Indiana" kind of irrational Final(s) fear.

And Seattle's not quite as big of a draw for NBC as one might think specifically with respect to hockey. CBC cannibalizes part of the hockey-watching market in that area, so much so that their main NBC affiliate relegated Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals to their second-tier channel in town.

I suspect the hockey fans who really care about hockey in the Phx metroplex are still going to tune into NHL on NBC in near-identical numbers. Picking up a market might be nice for the network, but strengthening the set of 30 in the long run would benefit both league and network. With that reasoning, QC combined with their readiness to house a franchise is the only logical choice.

Which of course means we'll be introducing YOUR Las Vegas Boondoggles next week.
