I don't know how old you are, but that sentence reads like it was written by someone who is under the age of 25. Vegas tried that from 1990 to ~1996 and it didn't work plus that was before internet gaming and Pennsylvania having casinos.

The city is still teetering on insolvency and their fiscal woes are not worth the trouble. It's still a Ghost Town.

Please excuse my poor grammar.  I'm fully aware of Atlantic City's many social and economic issues.  The post was merely wishful thinking on my part.

  2. I'd like to see the Devils have a minor league team in Jersey again.  Atlantic City might be a good spot.  In the wake of casino closures and other financial difficulties, the city has made several efforts to become a "year-round" family destination.  I imagine a minor league hockey team would bring at least some additional traffic into the city during the otherwise quiet winter months.  Furthermore, with a minor league team in Atlantic City, the Devils could strengthen their influence in South Jersey and build on the "Jersey's Team" marketing theme.

The Albany Devils and Phantoms have had a few meetings at AC's Boardwalk Hall.  Maybe this was an attempt to test the market?  I recognize that this scenario is very unlikely -- it is wishful thinking on my part.

Or the easiest one of all, Ferries! \

Other options: Staten Island Oysters ("Shellfish was a staple of their diet, including the Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) abundant in the waterways throughout the present-day New York City region. Evidence of their habitation can still be seen in shell middens along the shore in the Tottenville section, where oyster shells larger than 12 inches (305 mm) are not uncommon")

    Staten Island Hudsons (Henry Hudson)

Staten Island Wheels (After the New York Wheel)

Staten Island Snakes (alliterated) or Rattlers ("
The Staten Island Zoo was also the first to exhibit all the 32 varieties of rattlesnakes known to occur in the United States.[citation needed] In the late 1960s, the Zoo maintained the most complete rattlesnake collection in the world with 39 varieties.")

All better.  The ones I listed were all Yankee player nicknames.  Bambinos - Ruth, Iron Horses - Gehrig, Clippers - DiMaggio, Scooters - Rizzuto, Tugboats - Munson

  4. Per Uni-Watch, seems that the SWB Railriders logo will be relatively short lived.

The middle section of the article states, "The team will still be known as the RailRiders but will have a new logo “which really emphasizes SWB” for the 2016 season. Minor League Baseball, however, will not allow the team to unveil the logo until the end of this season."

Not looking good for the Porcupine conductor.

Damn, I thought their rebrand was pretty successful. I hope their next rebrand is even better.

Based on what I know about the team, the SWB merch sold better. The area was/is very attached to the classic interlocking SWB logo from the Red Barons days. IMO that logo was one of the best in minor league.

The top-seller in their store has been the SWB maroon hat. I also found this black cap with the gold SWB logo:

It's nice, but a little big. If they can return to a logo like the Red Barons days, I think it would be a major upgrade.

  5. On Sunday 6/22, the Lakewood BlueClaws will play as one of the suggested names that didn't win back in 2000....the "Pine Barons"

During the name-the-team contest I submitted "Pine Barons." Lakewood is near the New Jersey pine barrens and at the time (circa 2000/2001), the Phillies AAA affiliate was the SWB Red Barons. "Pine Barons" seemed to make sense but "Blueclaws" is fitting.

  6. Anyone else get the feeling that LetsGoOakland9 is becoming the new KevinW.?

Nope. Personally, I don't care. Let's stick to the thread's main topic, OK spleen?

I guess I ought to throw out my two cents on what's going on.

-The ACC made a proactive move by getting Syracuse and Pittsburgh. With everyone else in a 'wait and see' mode, the ACC made this move to say that it will do something. Syracuse has been on the mind of the ACC for quite a long time. Remember, Syracuse was the team the ACC wanted alongside Miami and Boston College in the last round of expansion before the Virginia Legislature butted in for Virginia Tech. Pitt is just the extra cherry on top for the ACC.

-The Big East isn't as buried as many are saying. To me, the one team that can save the Big East in football is Villanova. As it stands, there will be seven football schools (this includes incoming member TCU) and 15 overall members. Villanova making the jump to FBS would give the Big East the necessary eight members to survive in football. But, should Villanova say no to making that jump, the Big East might be in big trouble and may have to take in the scraps of the Big 12 to make things work.

-What about the non-football schools (outside of Villanova, of course. This group also includes Georgetown because I don't think they are going to make that jump to FBS football in my, or anyone else's, lifetime) in this whole issue? Sooner or later, those schools are going to start wondering if they really matter in the whole scheme of things? History has taught us that super conferences don't work in the Division I level (Looking at you, WAC). Those schools may just jump ship and form some sort of non-football conference that would make them all happy.

I'm a student at Villanova. Throughout the whole FCS/FBS nonsese, the adminstration has kept the student body update. FWIW, we were given the impression that 'Nova did say YES to going to the invitation to move upD, but not until after much deliberation. By the time the answer was given, the Big East basically gave us an "uhh, maybe we'll let you in."

  7. I know the Big East is desperate for attention in Football, but I suggest you guys should just stick with trying to bring Villanova up, OK?

Where would a DI FBS 'nova play at? Are they going to share Lincoln Financial Field with Temple?

I'm a student at Villanova. Word is we aren't going share the Linc with Temple and the most likely candidate would be PPL Park where the Union play.

That is correct, if your school decides to fund the additional scholarships and upgrade the salaries for the coaching staff. Good luck in not seeing your student fees rise. PPL Park needs the revenue and they know that they can sell beer to make money on an additional 4-5 home dates. That place needs revenue.

Haha yeah, we pay a lot already. The general sentiment on campus is in favor of moving up to the Big East. Football has gotten a lot more popular here over the past few seasons... and coincidentally the team is very, very good lol.
