  1. The El Paso Chihuahuas are good my to have a one night name change. They are going to use one of the names that was in the running when the Tucson Padres moved to El Paso.  So on June 10 they will be the El Paso Desert Gators. Do you happen to know any other teams change their identity for one night?

  2. Big Mac, Diablos is not in consideration right now for El Paso's new moniker. Sun Dogs, Desert Gators, Chihuahuas, Buckaroos, and Aardvarks are the five pitiful finalists the team owners selected.

They hinted at the final mascot choice yesterday.http://www.elpasotimes.com/latestnews/ci_24307856

Sun Dogs may sound like a made up species of minor league mascot, but it's not. A sun dog is an actual astral phenomena that's befitting of a place that calls itself "Sun City" (hence the Sun Bowl).strange-types-ice-sundog_63630_600x450.j

I was wondering why they'd move to El Paso when part of the reason they were moving from Tucson was because the Arizona baseball team was more popular; but then I found out UTEP doesn't have baseball... kind of surprising.

The reason why they are moving to El Paso is because the city government agreed to build a stadium. The crazy thing is they demolished the children's science museum and the city hall. You can find the city hall demolition on YouTube if you care to see it.

The ballpark construction has been rather controversial since it required the demolition and the costs have been raising quite quickly since this is a a fast construction deadline of less than one year.

As far as UTEP not having a baseball team, this is due to Title 9 in the 80's. Since football takes up a lot of scholarships and you need an equal amount of female scholarships, UTEP had to drop the program.

  3. Thanks Dralec for your kind words!

What's amazing about this hobby is that unlike baseball cards, you can't go out and buy a 500 page book, read it and become an expert on the subject. There is so little published information on this hobby. I spend hours each week researching rings and compiling my information in my own database.

The pictures and contributions on this board are amazing, I hope to be able to contribute to this group.

Not sure if you and others know, but Jostens will probably create fan rings again for the heat. This is a new trend that the Packers, Heat, SF Giants have offered over the last few years. If you are on a budget you can get a non-gold and cz version ring, or if you wish to spend some money, you can get a solid gold and diamond ring. I would say these rings are comparable to "B" version rings. And best of all, your last name can be displayed on the shank.

Here are two gold and diamond versions I own, with my name on the shank, ordered directly from Jostens:

Please note the pictures are not to scale, the Packers ring is about 25% larger than the Giants ring.

Yeah the Packers shareholders ring that's pictured above is massive!! I have people stopping and asking me all the time about mine. Even at Packer games people want to see it

. Did you go for the real gold or the jeweler's metal? If you got the jeweler's metal does it look good?
  4. Why cant we have a hockey stadium with a retactible roof. Then we would have hockey outside.

Because nobody is asking for it. Nobody would attend outdoor hockey on a regular basis. You certainly wouldn't have outdoor basketball in the majority of cities, and the other events that happen in these arenas aren't really meant for an outdoor environment. You'd be spending hundreds of millions to build a roof contraption that would get used once or twice a year.

Once upon a time the Penguins used to have a retractable roof at the Mellon Arena. Too bad they had too many glitches with the roof that they decided to close it up just like the Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
