It'd seem odd for the Dickinson team to call itself Dakota when they'll be far from the lone team in either Dakota.  If it were an option, though...Badlands Clippers would've been awesome.

Dickinson is 3 hours from Minot and about the same to the Black Hills where the Spearfish and Rapid teams will be placed. Pretty reasonable distances for teams to travel in that area. I'm hoping this league maintains as I've always thought a minor league baseball system would do well there. Nothing else around besides amateur ball so hopefully the locals support it.

I forget just which company ran these ads, but last season, there was a company that ran commercials on Sportsnet that had the slogan "the 5th season", obviously hockey being that "5th" season, and I wanted to shoot myself after hearing those ads multiple times over during games.

Scotiabank and yes it was nauseating. Thanks for bringing me back to that dark and terrible place.

Went on their Facebook page and one of the first posts has some cockamamie story about some legendary left-handed baseball player who gave up stardom in the MLB to return home to PA to play ball. Super boring. Anyway I presume the owner is left handed and soon to have his pockets left without the money he puts into this team. Great town but no way they can support a WCL team.

I did learn John Elway was born in Port Angeles though. Wikipedia has it's moments.

Could be. Playing in the West Coast League, you'd think that much would be obvious, though.

So many options for better names, too, even if you're aiming for marmots. Call them the Groundhogs or something (or Chucklings, which are baby groundhogs).

Can the Moda Center be a viable for a NHL team? Portland rarely gets talked about for a possible NHL team, but with the Winterhawks playing games there & a solid hockey fanbase, it would be a good fit. Plus, Chris McGowan has NBA experience with his time in LA.

Not without the King Paul's blessing. The Mighty Allen owns the Moda and without his direct involvement there will be no NHL in Portland. Which brings me to thinking there won't be big league hockey in the foreseeable future. Pretty sad because I think Portland and Seattle would be great markets. Been waiting for years and losing

    hope on either happening.

So I guess Bakersfield and High Desert are ceasing operations after this season.  The Carolina league will expand by 2 teams, with one being back in Kinston, and the other TBA.

Sad news. I always thought Bakersfield would be a great market for the Cal League if only the city and team could figure out how to get a better stadium than the sad sack Sam Lynn built in the 40's. No shocker though on High Desert...i too am surprised they lasted so long.

Yeah, and I don't think SF will do much better than the Barracuda, even if it's at the Warriors new arena and not the cow palace.

Also, if that were to happen, the AHL team would have a nicer, newer arena than the NHL team (not that the Tank is bad or anything). How often does that happen?

    Sorry SF meant Sioux Falls

I just don't understand the business aspect of putting your triple-A farm team in the same arena as your flagship. You're expanding your fanbase by maybe a couple hundred. Most of your season ticket holders are probably going to be people who would rather save their money, compared to a Sharks or Jets season ticket.

San Jose, especially, baffles me. Worst case scenario, put your team somewhere else in the metro area, Oakland or San Fran. Putting your team in a nearby city will maximize the number of people you get watching. They were something like 23rd in attendance.

The Jets at least have the benefit of being a team that sells out their 15000 seats consistently. There's actually a demand for more hockey. I still think they'd be better off putting them in Saskatoon, Regina, or maybe even Fargo or Thunder Bay, but their attendance was 9th or 10th, if I remember correctly, they're at least having the arrangement work out.

Yeah I'm in total agreement with you especially with the San Jose situation. I figure they are waiting on one of the new arenas like Astro said and Winnipeg AHL will start to lag at some point so hopefully Thunder Bay can figure out their arena issue as that seems like a perfect fit. I'm still hoping the Canucks come knocking on Seattle's door again and puts the team in the Key since it looks like no new arena here for god knows how long for NHL.

  9. I don't see Portland moving to AHL hockey since the Winterhawks are so entrenched with their long time history and Tacoma is out because the Tacoma Dome is such an obsolete dumpster with city officials lost in the woods with any ideas of how to find money for a refurbishment. Tacoma would be a great market for minor league hockey but no arena means no team. Abby seems like a train wreck where teams go to die which leaves Seattle and the Key. With the T Birds playing in Kent a good 30 minute drive in late afternoon traffic from Seattle I believe there's more than enough fans to get decent attendance numbers for AHL. Hell we had the Comets all ready to move in a few years ago until the NHL stepped in to squash it because the Coyotes were on the verge of moving in.

  10. True shame that they're ditching the Zephyrs name. It never quite fit New Orleans but its one of my all time favorite names going back to their days in Denver. I remember getting a Denver Zephyrs card back in the day and loving the name but having no idea what the hell a Zephyr was...had to look it up in the dictionary but I was still a bit confused. Sad day but hopefully it will make a comeback somewhere someday soon.
