The NHL already has too many teams. Brining back the Coyotes and Thrashers or putting a team in Kansas City would be stupid.

Sucks to see the Yotes (and their gorgeous logo and uniforms go). I'm sure whatever Utah comes up with will be horrible especially if it's anything like what Smith did with the Jazz.

Honestly, this is probably the most "vivid and unique" design of the "template era."

So, I'm about to tangent off into some analytical design thought, but:

While I understand the NFL's initial rationale that they wanted to create a "strong, consistent brand" for the Super Bowl, I think that philosophy was misguided, as is evident by their efforts to gradually add more "local flavor" to the logos.

I've always thought that the Roman numerals were the strongest element of the Super Bowl brand — moreso than the Lombardi trophy or the name "Super Bowl" itself. They own the use of Roman numerals in sports. Hell, the Super Bowl is probably the only reason why a lot of people even know how to read/interpret Roman numerals.

The logos of yore always did something super creative that made the Roman numerals the focal point. That's what made it work, and that's what made the past decade's worth of logos super bland.

If the NFL wants to maintain a "cohesive brand" for the Super Bowl, then I propose this: keep the "Super Bowl" bar-text and even the image of the trophy, but allow each Super Bowl to do whatever they want with the Roman numerals and other elements surrounding the logo, so long as they incorporate that bar-text and trophy image within specified parameters.

That way, you achieve the happy medium of "consistent brand" with "unique for each event" — not unlike the unique branding of each Olympics (which, the Olympic rings were cited as a reason for creating the templated Super Bowl logo in the first place).

Most of Joe Buck's redemption arc comes from journalists' realization that he is a rich kid who went to private school and thinks everyone around him is an idiot. Most members of the sports media in the 2010s/20s are also rich kids who went to private school and think  everyone around them is an idiot.  In an alternate timeline, he's at Defector writing "Draymond Green Is A Big Dope Who Sucks Because He's A Big Dope Who Sucks."

I imagine they're going to have a hard time rendering those colors in different mediums (Jerseys, print, hats, etc.).

I'm not sure if it's because of the saturation of both the rave green and blue colors, but they don't seem to have enough contrast when used next to each other. It kind of hurts my eyes.

Earlier in the thread, it was shown the official Pantone and CMYK values for the new colors. They'll be able to match those in print and textile.

Can someone explain to a non-college sports fan why those two schools were so unattractive to any of the major conferences?  Is it just on-field performance? Or that they’re not worth anything from a TV market / revenue standpoint?

I think geography was the biggest issue, since since the bulk of the teams in the other power conferences are in the eastern-central parts of the country.

Honestly, I see no reason to change if they don't have to. The CAA logo is a perfectly fine conference logo. It's easily legible, yet the tight kerning makes it unique enough. Plus, they've had some version of it, according to the mothership, for 20 years.

This. The CAA doesn't have the best conference logo, but they don't have the worst conference logo, either.

So...I know logic doesn't completely apply considering we're looking at an anthromorphic horse, but we aren't gonna talk about how this horse is somehow holding a sword with a hoof? 🧐

He's holding it the same way that Strong Bad can type with boxing gloves on.

With USC and UCLA coming in, and possibly others, it was going to have to go away sooner or later. With 2-4 more teams it'd be a total mess.

Well, to be fair, they had the pinwheel before Nebraska, Maryland, and Rutgers joined in. They could keep expanding it, but ultimately in the long run it's cheaper for them to have a logo that can stick around for a while without needing to be updated every time they add a new team to the conference.

Unfortunately this is likely not a possibiliy for most companies, as branding rules for company logos exist.  Usualy colors cannot be modified from a businesses primary colors, unless its adjusted to black and white.

If a company wants to sponsor a team badly enough, they can have their branding department create a version of their logo that meets the team's requirements. Companies make their own branding rules (well, the marketing agencies that create their brands set the rules, but the companies still have final say).

Not bad for Washington... I caught the Space Needle and the whale, but the map of the state eludes me.

I think it's in the center of the salish art "cell" just to the right of the whale. The blue shape has a little notch out of the top right, like an abstract shape of the state.

  12. Here's my question: how long does Rutgers stick around in the B1G? They haven't exactly been a top performer in the conference since joining. I could see them leaving at some point.

That said, USC and UCLA to the B1G just seems insane to me. The most unfortunate thing is that all these conference moves are entirely about money and those precious media revenues. Capitalism ruins all good things.

But going on what some others have said: I wouldn't mind seeing college football have a completely different conference structure from basketball - and I wouldn't be surprised if we end up seeing that happening at some point in the future. Hell, hockey pretty much has a completely different conference structure from the rest of NCAA sports, so I wouldn't be surprised if that happens with football as well.

And yeah, as someone who enjoys basketball far more than football, I loathe this.

  13. Tennessee looks awesome, but I think I would shift the "Soundtrack of America" slogan so that it appears centered in the white space between the "T" and the mount hole - or maybe track out the lettering so it stretches across that space - because it feels a little off-balance with the way you have it set now, even though it's technically on-center. :)
