U.S. District Judge Joseph C. Spero has ruled that Major League Baseball is a joint employer of minor league baseball players and that MiLB players are full-time Major League Baseball employees throughout the calendar year. Further, he ruled that MiLB players in Arizona, California and Florida are entitled to back pay and payment for time spent traveling with their teams and at spring-training. In addition to the back pay, Spero's ruling found that Major League Baseball and its member teams are liable for over $1.8 million in penalties due to shoddy record-keeping and, under State of Arizona minimum wage law, violations in that state are subject to triple damages.
