illwauk Posted September 9, 2009 Share Posted September 9, 2009 I'm usually only cool with a minor league team using their parent clubs name if...a) it would still have enough local relevance to use without the affiliation. Like if a St. Louis affiliate set up shop in Illinois, the team would still be able to justify using the name if they de-affiliated on the basis that the Cardinal is the state bird of Illinois.-or- the minor league club is based within the parent club's market (i.e. Pawtucket Red Sox, Iowa Cubs, etc.). Sometimes, this ties into "a" (Staten Island Yankees)But I still prefer the more creative solution of choosing a name that's related, but not a direct copy (i.e. the Memphis and Tucson examples above).
