  1. Miami Marlins sounds awful and feels awkward to say.. Sometimes an ever-changing flow of sounds is smooth and rolls off the tongue better, like in Miami Dolphins and Florida Marlins, but flipping them is equally awkward, like I'm trying to shove extra syllables into my mouth as I speak..

Also, with the state-named teams, what about "Golden State"?

I dislike it. Again, we've got the LA Lakers, LA Clippers, and Sacramento Kings. And let's be honest, the Lakers are probably the ones that could best claim the California crown. (But none of them should). There was nothing wrong with "San Francisco Warriors," and even their time in Oakland could still make sense if you expand it to imply the San Francisco Bay Area. (This is how I now justify the 49ers being in Santa Clara).

Silly admission here - In my youth I used to think the Washington Bullets played in the state of Washington and couldn't figure out why they played Seattle, they were from the same place, they should be friends...

  2. The closest team to me growing up was 2000 miles away, so I didn't have local teams to follow and chose a wide variety of them. But I've told the story of how I became a Giants, Chargers, Dolphins, and Huskies fan before. My favorite story is how my dad became a Steelers fan. His buddy in USMC boot camp in 1969 was from Pittsburgh and was always talking about how much he loved the Steelers and they were going to bust out and be great soon. Right after boot camp, my dad was sent to mechanic school in Memphis and his buddy went to Vietnam where he was killed on the first day. So my dad decided to honor him by rooting for the team he loved so much. Worked out well for him I guess...

  3. NFL: Chargers - when I was first getting into football, my dad bought me a preview magazine. The cover article was "Why Fouts is better than Bradshaw". As my dad was a Steelers fan, I wanted to root for a better team and that seemed to be the one.

NHL: Penguins - I like Penguins, so despite my 5th grade classmates strong efforts to make me an Islanders fan, once I found out there was a team called the Penguins, they became my team.

MLB: Giants - I don't know why I picked them back in 1982 when I started watching baseball. I just did and have followed them ever since.

NCAA: Washington - Attended there. My dad didn't want his kids to root for a college team until we went to a school, so I never had any interest in college sports until my senior year in high school when I knew I was going to go to UW.

I don't automatically root for USA national teams. It depends on the sport and who they are playing.

  4. Hypothetical question here: What if this year's Army-Navy game would have had an impact on the final BCS standings to determine who's going to BCS bowls? Do they postpone the BCS selection or simply ignore Army-Navy in the standings?

    Army-Navy is ignored.

So theoretically, and highly unlikely, Army and Navy could be undefeated and 1-2 in the BCS standings and would play for the national title no matter what happened in the Army-Navy game...

    Here's my rough prediction.

    Clemson/Florida St to Big 12

    Georgia Tech/Virginia to Big 10

    Virginia Tech/NC State to SEC

Now, from an ACC standpoint, they're best option is to immediately add Cincinnati and UConn (both discussed before adding Louisville) and maybe South Florida just to finish off the relevancy of the Big East and to get membership up. Next get Navy and Army. Now you've set up a good chance at making Notre Dame happy and getting them to become a full member. And assuming, a big hypothetical, they do, they'd be fine at 14. Put ND and BC in a division (a traditional game for ND) so they play every year. Army-Navy in a division so they're big game becomes and annual ACC conference game (more money for the conference?). Make that the opposite division for ND and it allows them to keep Navy as a permanent cross-division rival (or put all 4 schools in the same division I guess). Then, with 4 non-Conf games available, 3 can be taken up by USC, Michigan and Michigan St.

The ACC's key to success isn't fending off the other conferences. It's making Notre Dame as happy as possible.

One big problem with that is that Army-Navy is always held after the conference championships. If they both joined the ACC, that game would have to come before the ACCCG due to a possible impact on who plays in the game.
