  1. Now that the decades old speculation of what the missing robo penguin away uniform would have actually looked like on the ice has been put to bed, I have a new found appreciation for the Pittsburgh script uniform.   No matter my criticism of the Pens RR2.0 , it's better than this train wreck the Sabres have trotted out in.

That’s another cool idea for an NHL jersey line. A prototype line. That teams would wear a prototype jersey from their history. No matter how stupid or bombastic it would be. Or they could just do an adidas jersey line. I’d buy it.

Mike Keenan will be the guest of honor to do the reveal,

That was, from my memory, the reason behind the design on PNC Park. Owners wanted an intimate ballpark that emphasised the view of the city over adding additional seats. One of the best ballparks for those reasons.

Let's be fair here, the Pirates built a small ball park because they sucked for years before it was built and no one was showing up.  Having maybe 20k at a Bucs game in Three Rivers that held 50k wasn't a good look.  So they turned around and designed their 'small intimate ballpark'.  It's the same end point Snyder is going towards with FedEx, just coming in from a different direction, by removing half the upper bowl for the same reason.

Now, credit where it's due.  PNC is a fantastically designed building, and the Pirates and HOK deserves all the praise they've gotten for how it turned out.  But if they were a better drawing team that stadium would have been built with a club level with an additional 5,000 seats.

Do people still enjoy Emrick’s act? I’m tired of his thesaurus for “pass”, and his yelps and groans are beyond grating.

I don't have the disdain for him and his broadcast partners now that I did in the 90s when Fox was competing against ESPN, but I still don't enjoy listening to him call a game.  McGuire can single handedly ruin any broadcast he shows up on, and we are all better for him getting bumped from the A crew.  I'm neutral on Edzo on NBC national until he starts talking about his pony racing.  I usually have no problem tuning into a NBCS Chicago game to hear him paired with Foley though, and he used to work well with Mike Lange.

Accepting Gary Thorne as a national hockey broadcaster is not going to happen again, I'd take Gord, his broadcasts are usually pretty good.

I'll be curious to know what Sky Sports graphics looked like. I know that there was some change-ups between which networks - Sky and BT - have which windows of games this year, so I don't know which of those two had tonight's game, but I'm sure I'll find out soon enough if Sky is in-sync with NBCSN or if they're keeping their own score bug and related graphics.

Sky did have the rights to tonights game.

Penguins vs Flyers in a Pennsylvania football stadium....

We did this literally LAST SEASON. Don't even bother making new jerseys.

To be fair, the original concept for the Pens vs. Flyers game was that it would be a 'home and home' series.  It is just taking a year longer to host the second leg then was originally planned.

If I recall, the issue with the FoxTrax pucks was that they never froze quite right and were taking funny bounces as a result. Of course, nowadays, everyone's ice is such crap that even normal pucks are bouncing all over the place, so maybe no one cares now.

The problem was that they couldn't be frozen at all.  The pucks were cut in half, the tracker inserted and then glued back together.  I don't ever recall one splitting apart during play.  With the advancements since the 90s, if they can somehow develop one that can stand being frozen, there is no reason why the NHL can't adapt Premier League goal line technology for hockey.  And instead of the system signalling the ref of a goal, have it directly turn on the goal light.

crystal clear air-conditioned force fields that can be deployed over and around the stadiums would be more likely than the Cubs making the world series by then.

Actually, crystal clear force fields that could block rain would be an amazing invention for sports (well, life in general.) Can one of you science nerds start working on that?

I decided to read this thread from the beginning, and came across this post.  Re-evaluate expectations of the Qatari Wold Cup accordingly.

Penguins have changed their banners AGAIN. I was against it last time, but at least they looked good. Can't say that this time.

The Pens fans I'm talking to almost unanimously agree that they're great.  But I agree with you, I don't like these new ones at all, aside from the 2016 banner being in athletic gold.

  10. The NHL doesn't need divisions when it is conference standings that determine who makes the playoffs.

Add 4 more regular season games, play everyone in your conference 4 times and everyone in the other conference twice.

    Western Conference

Anaheim, Calgary, Chicago, Colorado, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Nashville, Phoenix, San Jose, St. Louis, Vancouver.

    Eastern Conference

Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Carolina, Florida, Montreal, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Washington.

This brings up an issue regarding NBA (and NHL, I think) divisions that I think about every once in a while... Why do they even exist? Is it just to create a feeling of regional rivalries? It seems kind of pointless when it is a team's position in the conference, not division, that really matters.

Which is why if the NHL did go back to 28 teams I would love to see them reinstitute the divisional playoff system that the league abandoned in the early 90's. Furthermore what better way to promote some bad blood among rivals then to have to play an additional 8-14 divisional games in the playoffs.

  11. Are the seats really black? That's pretty cool.

It's nice that they have the rafter all to themselves for banners. Some of the Flyers / Sixers banners are hard to see, because they can't be hung in the middle like that. Also, the Flyers have gone to (at least for division, we'll see about conference this year) single banners with multiple years on them - think Celtics retired number banners. I guess they were running out of space cause of the Sixers.

I think the color is actually a charcoal gray, but it still looks good irregardless.

That Consol Energy Center look pretty awesome!

Ive been hoarding construction photos of the place, I got to say, inside its a helluva building. Im not a fan of the exterior, but given the option of moving to Kansas City, I can live with it.
