its “Fastbreak” theme by Non-Stop Music had gained familiarity in the nearly 20 years

When I was still "in the business", Non-Stop was basically the Kohl's of production music - decent quality for the price. (To give you an idea, I used Non-Stop's music for High School sports highlight tapes because I could afford it.)   It may be different now, but FirstCom used to be the gold standard in sports production music. In fact, ESPN used FirstCom for a lot of their stuff.

    Pretty good read here: https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2024/05/how-espn-failed-nba-critical-comparison-nbc/

This article kind of gets to a point that I made recently in this thread, which is that ESPN has abandoned both earnest, love-of-the-game sports coverage and snarky "you don't get the shoooooowwww" meta-commentary in favor of...some sort of product that's joyless and dumb at the same time, and this lack of direction has most obviously manifested itself in its NBA coverage, which has been disappointing and irritating everybody for the better part of the last 20 years at this point.

    This sums it up perfectly.

ESPN is not a platform for the game, the game is a platform for ESPN.

That's not how licensing works. Tesh owns it. Not FOX.

Licensing works in all sorts of ways. For example, Tesh could have sold the song outright. He could have sold the publishing rights. He could have given someone an exclusive license to the song for a period of time. He could have done a combination of things with the license. It's possible NBC paid Tesh a one time fee for the song,  NBC owned it from the start, and they sold it to FOX. Point being, writing the song doesn't automatically mean you own the song.  Artists sell the rights to their material all the time.

Speaking of Xfinity series, I’ll honestly never understand why Toyota shifted to running Supra over Camry. What was the actual reason? A shot-in-the-dark advantage?

My guess is Toyota wants to market the Supra to racing fans.

The race itself certainly wasn’t the highlight. I like using two compounds but the soft didn’t wear nearly enough and it doesn’t matter any way if you just can’t pass. There was zero benefit to running the hard. Larsen couldn’t pass Hamlin on soft tires that were, what, 50+ laps fresher?  How do they eff that up?

The NextGen car sucks and tire wear or more horsepower isn't going to fix it. NASCAR should either dump the damned thing or only run intermediate tracks. I'm at the point where I'm only going to watch the Xfinity races.

    Dude...

I'm not sure if there's enough commercial-break time to play a few minutes at a time in between innings and get more than 30-mins of game-time in, but - hear me out -

what if they played while the Phillies were playing?  I'm not sure the exact specs, but I'm fairly certain they could put the lines for a regulation-arena-sized field in the outfield (or close enough - who really cares how big an arena field is?)  The field-goal posts could be either 1) in play, and an obstacle that the outfielders have to deal with (not to mention the obstacle of 22 players throwing and kicking a ball around and tackling each other) or 2) built into the walls, so all of the field goals and extra points go into the stands.

If they really wanted excitement, they could also put the arena barricades up (since it's not really arena football without the barricades) and outfielders would not only have to run into a live football game to catch a ball, but they'd have to hurdle the barricade too.

Also - arena football players would be allowed to swat balls out of the air if they were getting too close to them, so a visiting-team outfielder could be going for a ball, and a Philadelphia arena player just swats it away... or tackles the motherfluffer!

The best part?  Not every city has an arena team, so some stadiums would be straight-up baseball, and others would be complete mayhem.  Talk about a home-field advantage!

EDIT: and since it's football, you know what rule could get invoked  - but now, a baseball game is going on while the gorilla is deployed!

You're a goddam genius.  An absolute genius.

    Outstanding.

I just had the seed of an idea. You were the one who took it home.

if there's one thing new yorkers hate more than each other, it's southerners who want to yap about NYC. just look at what happened to john rocker.

This will be the second time I've nicely asked you to stop with the hating on the south bull:censored:. There will not be a third.

You need to find a way to talk hockey without making it all about your irrational hatred of all things southern. I suggest you do it right quick.

  8. After the second period, I had already resigned myself to the fact  that this thing was going seven. Kreider reeling off a natural hat trick and the Rangers closing out the series was unexpected, to say the least, but I'll gladly take it.

    On to the conference finals.

I thought about putting this in one of the News threads, but honestly, this video from Baseball Doesn't Exist (one of THE BEST sports channels on YouTube, by the way) goes into so much detail and explains so many of the business variables behind the beasts that both Nike and Fanatics have become that it's probably worth it's own thread. It covers so much of what we discussed here, namely regarding the quality (or lack therof) of these newest MLB uniforms. It also explains how and why soooo many different jersey variants (that is, the NBA City and MLB CityConnect stuff, and whatever Nike et. al. invariably tries or is trying to do with the NFL) exist. Short translation: return on investment.

Among quick highlights is that somehow, Linsanity seemed to jump this trend off. But once you see some of the numbers involved (pay special attention from about the 7:00 mark onwards), you'll see the sheer size of Nike's investments into the NFL, NBA, and now MLB. I mean, they basically backed a convoy of Brinks and Garda Cash Logistics trucks up to the front doors of each of these leagues' head offices. (In case anyone hasn't yet seen it, this business sense also helps explain what otherwise would seem like the sacrilegious switch on the part of Germany from adidas to Nike cone 2027.)

Anyway, it's definitely worth a watch. Dude may win himself some type of journalism award off this one.

    Excellent video.

Fun fact: The NFL is why Nike started putting the logo on the soles of their cleats. Back in the day, Nike had people whose job was to watch games and log how many times the logo appeared on screen. One of the "watchers", I guess, noticed how often the bottom of players feet were on screen during a football game and  logos on the soles of Nike football cleats was born.

Thank you. Can’t speak for anyone else but I definitely needed to be told.

The mod team doesn't like being this strict on the topic, but every conversation about the Washingtons old identity inevitably ends up turning into a political flame war. And it usually just gets worse from there.

OK, kids, you've had your fun, but it's time to move on. You are free debate the merit or lack thereof of the Washingtons old identity until you're blue in the face - you just can't do it here. It's been beaten to death so many times that cats are envious of the number of lives it has. Either take it somewhere else or stop talking about it.

    Thanks.

An 85-second half inning may or may not be a record, but it's gotta be up there.

Without the pitch clock, that same 3 pitch half inning probably takes 12 minutes.

NASCAR has a history of this tying a money winnings to a race result from Winston million, NoBull 5, and currently with the Dash4Cash, to go in addition to the all star race and clash. I like the return to it honestly. Gives another reason to watch after the season starts hype and before the playoffs. I just hope the last race is at a crown jewel race which would probably be Indy based on how the schedule is currently.

Fair point. I'm not against the idea, I'm all for anything that will grow the sport. Let's hope this helps.

I'm curious, what's it like never having to receive comeuppance for anything ever? must be wonderful.

Quit putting the hex on my Rangers, dude.

At least with the 49ers and 76ers, those brands are named after historically-significant moments/eras in American history. I'm sorry but naming yourself the 32s because you were "founded" in 1932 is dumb.
