  1. I live in the area we're talking about. Other people that live here like the Knights and are largely still fans of whatever NFL team they liked prior to the Raiders move. In my opinion, if they get the state assembly to pull their pants down for a ballpark like they did for Allegiant Stadium, it's gonna look like the Miami Marlins with a few more drunken tourists very quickly. 81 major league priced home games mostly occurring during the time of year where you just want to go from air-conditioned work to air-conditioned home isn't gonna work, even if it's a dome. Displacing the minor league team and hiking up ticket prices for your 100+ loss roster because you've burnt every bridge and alienated every fan in your current home market isn't gonna win a lot of hearts and minds on top of that.

(Also the RSN for the Knights is being liquidated by WBD, so good luck getting any regional TV money, even if they throw Utah into your region)

Trying to figure out a Vegas uniform for this seems like a challenge -- lots of fun design inspiration in vintage Las Vegas design culture, but does any of that translate to an old-timey hockey sweater with a felt crest?

They tipped their hand in the Athletic article about the glow-in-the-dark jerseys.

    Quote

“You try not to design a vintage-looking jersey for a team’s third, because that’s what the Winter Classic is going to look like,” Merrill explained. “You try not to design a super futuristic-looking jersey, because that’s what the Stadium Series jersey is going to look like. We try not to step on those, or play those cards, until it’s time.

“There are lots of Western-themed casinos, but that really feels like a Winter Classic, so we’re going to wait on that one. There are also a lot of more modern-day casinos like the Venetian or the Cosmopolitan. That’s going to be their Stadium Series jersey someday. Whereas the essential, Vegas-y-ness of Stardust made us say, ‘That’s the Reverse Retro casino.’”

I would bet on Vegas Vic being featured prominently.

  3. The point I was trying to make is that the skyline reference is much more direct and specific than "this jersey has 21 stripes to represent every country in New Jersey", not that local references like that automatically justify a design.

I just like they way the blackout uniforms look independently of that. It's clearly jumping on a trend, but I think it's better executed than other "stealthy" alternates (Sharks/Oilers/etc) because of the color chosen. I get why it's not for everybody though.

Eh, I always thought the skyline reference was a pretty direct one, but to each their own.

I like the blackouts as an alternate, but I'd never want them to be the primaries or worn in a playoff series. I think the Stars' biggest problem is that their primary logo isn't all that great. The D and the star and all the beveling just doesn't mesh all that well together.

Well of course, I can't speak for everyone but I love hockey more than I hate ads

That's really the core of the issue here. If the ownership gets more money by putting a patch/sticker on the uniform, and the only negative is "a percentage of the fanbase is annoyed but keeps watching regardless," why wouldn't they?

And honestly, the digitally superimposed ads next to the blue lines bothered me waaaaaaay more than the helmet stickers this year. At least the stickers don't randomly start jittering around the playing surface.

  6. There was a period when the Stars thought Strader might come back and they had a holding pattern broadcast team of Razor on play-by-play and noted shot-blocker Craig Ludwig on color, and that broadcast was actually terrible. Hiring an actual play-by-play guy was such a massive improvement that it almost didn't matter who it was.

(the Texas Rangers and Mavs regional broadcasts being awful probably helps lower the standards too)

I commented a while ago, but I just thought of a new one:

The Expos should not return. Olympic Stadium is in shambles and I believe the nostalgia would wear off way too quickly and leave the team in the same situation it was in.

I think the only way they would come back is if there are concrete plans for a new stadium. The Big O would only be a temporary solution like RFK for the former Expos.

  8. Is this new? I thought the Stars were one of the sunbelt success stories.

Or is it just a "we only support winners" thing?

They were. Up until their recent string of bad ownership decisions, bad seasons, and this season with payroll.

Hell, they made a trade for a suspended player last week just so they could be at the salary cap floor.

The Stars had been relative "winners" on the ice for the majority of their existence in Dallas. These recent down years have unfortunately coincided with the Rangers' and Mavericks' rise along with new Cowboys Stadium. And of course, Tom Hicks. The past few years have been a confluence of bad for the Stars.

The ownership situation will be sorted out by Thanksgiving. The next homestand starts on the 27th, well past the end of the World Series. Attendance should perk up then. Also, if this chart is accurate, the Stars are still easily the best revenue-earning team of all the 90s expansion/relocation teams despite their troubles.

  9. If I were a Stars fan I would be awfully worried right about now....

The contractual facts: The Dallas Stars have a contractual obligation (Non-Relocation Agreement) with the AAC lenders that would prevent the team from being moved until at least 2023. The Stars also have a Location Agreement with the City of Dallas that the team could not be moved until at least 2031. After that, there is a series of 10 one-year lease options that are designed to be attractive enough financially as to avert the movement of the team to a new facility during that period.

In addition, don't the Stars own half of the arena?

Yep. They are probably the most stable Southern team in the NHL, even after becoming a Tom Hicks victim.

And don't forget just plain sucking lately.

Sucking is an effect of a Tom Hicks'ing. See: Texas Rangers '01-'08, Liverpool.

Speaking of, I don't follow it closely enough, but is there any fire to the rumors that Greenberg and Cuban were going to put together a bid? I haven't followed hockey since the 90s, but I like Chuck and I might carry a passing interest in something he's involved in.

They've both thrown their hat into the ring, but at this point it looks like wishful thinking. Tom Gaglardi is probably gonna end up as the owner. Hopefully the process will be over before the season starts

  12. With that said, I was lucky enough to have won some money on a game show, and have decided that for the first time in my life I will be purchasing an MLB authentic jersey. I had no idea prices were so high now a days for a Cool Base jersey, I guess I hadn't looked at a price tag that closely in a few years, and was wondering if anyone here could recommend a good place to pick up a perfectly authentic jersey for a good price. The cheapest authentic retailer I've found so far is Jersey Joe.com, with a customizable Cool Base for $229.99 -- is there anywhere cheaper or am I about at that limit?

SportsK has it for cheaper. That is the easily the best site for officially licensed hockey and baseball jerseys.
