MLB Stadium Saga: Oakland/Tampa Bay/Southside
DrAwesomeberry replied to So_Fla's topic in Sports In General
I live in the area we're talking about. Other people that live here like the Knights and are largely still fans of whatever NFL team they liked prior to the Raiders move. In my opinion, if they get the state assembly to pull their pants down for a ballpark like they did for Allegiant Stadium, it's gonna look like the Miami Marlins with a few more drunken tourists very quickly. 81 major league priced home games mostly occurring during the time of year where you just want to go from air-conditioned work to air-conditioned home isn't gonna work, even if it's a dome. Displacing the minor league team and hiking up ticket prices for your 100+ loss roster because you've burnt every bridge and alienated every fan in your current home market isn't gonna win a lot of hearts and minds on top of that. (Also the RSN for the Knights is being liquidated by WBD, so good luck getting any regional TV money, even if they throw Utah into your region)- 3,837 replies

They tipped their hand in the Athletic article about the glow-in-the-dark jerseys. I would bet on Vegas Vic being featured prominently.

The point I was trying to make is that the skyline reference is much more direct and specific than "this jersey has 21 stripes to represent every country in New Jersey", not that local references like that automatically justify a design. I just like they way the blackout uniforms look independently of that. It's clearly jumping on a trend, but I think it's better executed than other "stealthy" alternates (Sharks/Oilers/etc) because of the color chosen. I get why it's not for everybody though.
-
Eh, I always thought the skyline reference was a pretty direct one, but to each their own. I like the blackouts as an alternate, but I'd never want them to be the primaries or worn in a playoff series. I think the Stars' biggest problem is that their primary logo isn't all that great. The D and the star and all the beveling just doesn't mesh all that well together.
-
That's really the core of the issue here. If the ownership gets more money by putting a patch/sticker on the uniform, and the only negative is "a percentage of the fanbase is annoyed but keeps watching regardless," why wouldn't they? And honestly, the digitally superimposed ads next to the blue lines bothered me waaaaaaay more than the helmet stickers this year. At least the stickers don't randomly start jittering around the playing surface.

The Sam Darnold graphic aired on Monday Night Football and then subsequently blew up on Twitter

There was a period when the Stars thought Strader might come back and they had a holding pattern broadcast team of Razor on play-by-play and noted shot-blocker Craig Ludwig on color, and that broadcast was actually terrible. Hiring an actual play-by-play guy was such a massive improvement that it almost didn't matter who it was. (the Texas Rangers and Mavs regional broadcasts being awful probably helps lower the standards too)

Arena Rafters & Banners

All NHL division champion banners should be consolidated into a single banner. I know the Capitals did that after people made jokes about all their "Southeast Division Champs" banners. -

The Falcons had division and conference championship banners at the Georgia Dome. I wonder if they're really gone or if they're just hanging in a weird place. -
I think the only way they would come back is if there are concrete plans for a new stadium. The Big O would only be a temporary solution like RFK for the former Expos.

NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

They were. Up until their recent string of bad ownership decisions, bad seasons, and this season with payroll. Hell, they made a trade for a suspended player last week just so they could be at the salary cap floor. The Stars had been relative "winners" on the ice for the majority of their existence in Dallas. These recent down years have unfortunately coincided with the Rangers' and Mavericks' rise along with new Cowboys Stadium. And of course, Tom Hicks. The past few years have been a confluence of bad for the Stars. The ownership situation will be sorted out by Thanksgiving. The next homestand starts on the 27th, well past the end of the World Series. Attendance should perk up then. Also, if this chart is accurate, the Stars are still easily the best revenue-earning team of all the 90s expansion/relocation teams despite their troubles. -

My link In addition, don't the Stars own half of the arena? Yep. They are probably the most stable Southern team in the NHL, even after becoming a Tom Hicks victim. And don't forget just plain sucking lately. Sucking is an effect of a Tom Hicks'ing. See: Texas Rangers '01-'08, Liverpool. Speaking of, I don't follow it closely enough, but is there any fire to the rumors that Greenberg and Cuban were going to put together a bid? I haven't followed hockey since the 90s, but I like Chuck and I might carry a passing interest in something he's involved in. They've both thrown their hat into the ring, but at this point it looks like wishful thinking. Tom Gaglardi is probably gonna end up as the owner. Hopefully the process will be over before the season starts -

I saw someone on Ebay a while back was trying to sell this for $80, the same price as an official replica for a player who is still on the team. A little ballsy for a counterfeiter. -
