  1. A few thoughts.

    1. Tradition of the Big Ten and the ACC has been somewhat messed with. The Big Ten is no longer Midwest and the ACC lost one of its founding members. Also, Maryland acted as a bridge between the South and the new Northern schools. (BC, Syracuse, Pitt, UConn, ND)

    2. I'm so glad the Big East (which was a complete mess) is finally folding. The Big East was my favorite conference but once WV, Pitt, and Syracuse left and they filled those spots with Boise State, Navy and Temple, I lost all respect. Hopefully, the football schools will split away calling themselves the Metro (all football schools are in cities) and the Basketball schools will add Catholic or primarily basketball schools to Gtown, Nova, St. John's, Marquette, etc (Xavier, St. Louis, St. Joes)

    3. It's good that UConn will probably reunite with Syracuse, BC, and Pitt.

    4. I don't think that there will be any more moves for a while. If you haven't noticed, the Big 12 is doing pretty well in football these days. I think they are happy with a round robin football schedule and happy with their overall brand. I don't think they would want to add FSU, Clemson or Louisville unless the ACC totally collapses. Because the Big XII stays put, the ACC will too after adding UConn unles they are sniped by the Big Ten or SEC which I believe has NOTHING to gain by adding NC State or even VT. Blacksburg isn't a huge market and the state of North Carolina is dedicated to UNC and Duke.

    What do you guys think?

  2. The Big East has added teams that don't fit the Eastern or "Big East reputation" requirement and the real Big East schools have left for the ACC. Here is a scenario where the football minded half of the ACC and Big East form a new conference and the Basketball powerhouses form the strongest conference of all time.

    Metro

    Florida State

    Miami

    Clemson

    Georgia Tech

    Louisville

    Cincinnati

    USF

    UCF

    Houston

    SMU

    Memphis

    Virginia Tech

The reincarnated Metro adds old teams such as FSU, Lousiville, VT, Memphis and Cincinnati along with many former Conference USA members. Almost all Metro teams are still located in urban areas.

    Big East

    Wake Forest

    NC State

    UNC

    Duke

    Virginia

    Maryland

    Georgetown

    Villanova

    Rutgers

    St. John's

    Seton Hall

    Pittsburgh

    Syracuse

    Notre Dame

    Boston College

    Connecticut

    Providence

Teams from this new Big East Conference have won 9 out of the last 13 NCAA Nat'l Championships. A trade off for this conference would be a weak football conference.

  3. UNC

    Duke

    Florida State

    Miami

Unless Miami gets absolutely raped by the NCAA the ACC would still split up Miami and Florida State with hope of a Miami-FSU championship game. They'd then develop a schedule that keeps permanent cross over opponents.

I was torn on this. Would the ACC rather have a FSU Miami title game or have them play guaranteed every year.

  4. Here's what I would change

    EAST

    North Atlantic

    New England Patriots

    Buffalo Bills

    Cleveland Browns

    New York Jets

    South Atlantic

    Miami Dolphins

    Tampa Bay Bucs

    Atlanta Falcons

    Carolina Panthers

    Mid-Atlantic

    Philadelphia Eagles

    Dallas Cowboys

    Washington Redskins

    New York Giants

    Central

    Pittsburgh Steelers

    Baltimore Ravens

    Cinncinati Bengals

    Indianapolis Colts

    WEST

    Pacific

    Oakland Raiders

    San Francsico 49ers

    San Diego Chargers

Los Angeles (insert name, as long as its not Jaguars lol)

    Gulf

    New Orleans Saints

    Kansas City Chiefs

    Houston Texans

    Tennesee Titans

    Mountain

    Seattle Seahawks

    St. Louis Rams

    Denver Broncos

    Arizona Cardinals

    North

    Green Bay Packers

    Chicago Bears

    Minnesota Vikings

    Detroit Lions

  5. Seeing these two articles got me thinking about an Super Conference alignment where Texas and BYU go to the Big Ten. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8487712/ohio-state-buckeyes-texas-longhorns-set-home-home-series

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8491649/wisconsin-badgers-byu-cougars-set-2-game-series-2017-2018

In this scenario, the Big Ten would be the first to expand adding Texas, Kansas, BYU and Rutgers. In many scenarios the Big Ten gets stuck with an academically inferior member that doesn't fit the conference. (Kansas State, Iowa State) But, in this scenario, the Big Ten gets 4 pretty good academic schools that fit in the Big Ten model of being a large research university.

The Pac 16 grabs Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Baylor. 4 good football universities and by grabbing these 4 Big 12 schools, the Pac 12 avoids being geographically shut out of Conference Realignment.

SEC decides not to expand. Let's face it. An NC State or even a Virginia Tech would get crushed in the SEC and the SEC would rather not raid another conference.

The ACC takes West Virginia to get to 16 (and add a historic rival of VT) when Notre Dame decides to abandon Independence to play in a division with Pitt, Syracuse and BC, 3 historic rivals. Notre Dame stayed independent until it became clear that they would not have a spot in the new playoff system if they didn't join a conference.

    Schedules

    Big Ten

All teams play fixed rivals and half of remaining Big Ten teams each year. So, there are no real divisions

    Penn State-Rutgers

    Michigan-Ohio State

    Purdue-Indiana

    Illinois-Northwestern

    Wisconsin-Michigan State

    Iowa-Minnestoa

    Nebraska-Kansas

    Texas-BYU

    Pac 16

Teams play division and half of remaining Pac 16 teams

    Washington

    Washington State

    Oregon

    Oregon State

    USC

    UCLA

    California

    Stanford

    Arizona

    Arizona State

    Utah

    Colorado

    Oklahoma

    Oklahoma State

    Texas Tech

    Baylor

    ACC

Teams play division and half of remaining teams

    Notre Dame

    Pittsburgh

    Syracuse

    Boston College

    Maryland

    Virginia

    Virginia Tech

    West Virginia

    UNC

    Duke

    Florida State

    Miami

    Wake Forest

    NC State

    Clemson

    Georgia Tech

    SEC

    Stays Same

    Conference Screwed

    Connecticut

    Temple

    Louisville

    Cincinnati

    USF

    UCF

    SMU

    TCU

    Houston

    Memphis

    Kansas State

    Iowa State

    Boise State

    San Diego State

  6. What playoffs are you talking about? If it's National Championship playoffs, yes and if their record is good enough you can bet they will be in it. If you're talking ACC playoffs, no because they're not in the ACC in football.

In my post I described how a conference playoff might work in the ACC if they take UConn. The winners of the three divisions plus a wild card would make the conference playoffs. Do you think if ND had a good enough winning percentage in the five games against ACC teams they should be able to take the wild card spot in this hypothetical conference playoff?

  7. After the Notre Dame move today, which I think is really big, Here's what I think happens next...

ACC gets UConn in all sports, goes ahead with a 15 and a half (ND will play at least 5 football games against ACC teams) members.

    Big East falls apart

Louisville and Cincinnati go to Big 12

    Rutgers goes independent

UCF, USF, Houston, SMU go back to C-USA and Boise and San Diego St go back to the MW

    ACC football divisions

    UConn

    BC

    Syracuse

    Pittsburgh

    Maryland

    Virginia

    Virginia Tech

    Duke

    UNC

    NC St

    Georgia Tech

    Wake Forest

    Florida St

    Clemson

    Miami

Each team plays division and 4 other teams. First conference playoff is formed. All three division winners make playoffs and a wild card. 1 plays 4. 2 plays 3. In addition the rest of the conference plays in ladder form. 5 plays 6. 7 plays 8. Etc.

    Week 2: Conference Championship

(Notre Dame plays 2 teams from each division.) Do you think ND should be eligible for the playoffs if their record is good enough??

  8. Here's a cool look at what would have happened if the Pacific Coast League had moved past Open league classification in the 1950s and become the third major league before the Dodgers and Giants could leave New York. Do you think it would have been better this way?

    National League

    Brooklyn Dodgers

    Atlanta Braves

    New York Giants

    Philadelphia Phillies

    Pittsburgh Pirates

    Cincinnati Reds

    Chicago Cubs

    St. Louis Cardinals

    American League

    Baltimore Orioles

    Boston Red Sox

    New York Yankees

    Kansas City Athletics

    Cleveland Indians

    Detroit Tigers

    Chicago White Sox

    Minnesota Twins

    Pacific Coast League

    Hollywood Stars

    Los Angeles Angels

    San Diego Padres

    Sacramento Solons

    Oakland Oaks

    San Francisco Seals

    Portland Beavers

    Seattle Rainiers

    Central League

    Houston Astros

    Colorado Rockies

    Miami Marlins

    Milwaukee Brewers

    Texas Rangers

    Toronto Blue Jays

    Arizona Diamondbacks

    Tampa Bay Rays
