Well, that you haven't heard from them probably speaks to the rhetorical bankruptcy of "save the Coyotes to see your team from back home." You're talking about one appearance a year from those teams, two from Chicago every other year, and two or three from Western Canada. Maybe those folks like having those games, but not enough to support the corporate welfare the Coyotes obviously need to survive. I mean, people don't move to Arizona to ambitiously fund the greater good; why would they care about some stupid sports team needing a new place to play?

Great points. By no means did I ever expect the collective fandom of NHL fans (of other teams) living in metro PHX to play a significant factor (monetary or vocal) in keeping the team here and/or a new arena (outside of purchasing tickets)...looking back maybe "support" was too strong of a word. For the most part it is just an interesting and odd dynamic to see/hear opposing fans say the Yotes should leave (and I get it to a degree), but by default you are calling for a team to leave and thus end your ability to see your team once/twice a year and/or NHL hockey.

  2. I haven't chimed in since I am biased as an avid fan/ticket holder, but what I always find the most interesting is the lack of support from non-Yotes fans that have relocated to the valley. I do not expect them to support the team from a fan standpoint, but from a hockey standpoint. I get the history/funding/"better" locations/etc. arguments, and in relation to Phoenix transplants they rightfully support their teams, but if the Coyotes leave, regardless of who you support, you will have no professional hockey.

  3. If Suns ownership was interested in buying the Coyotes, I could see it happening. Tell Glendale to go pound sand (they've got plenty!) and go back to the awkwardly-shaped basketball barn where you drew well regardless.

You'd think, though, that if Suns ownership had an interest, they would have expressed it by now.

Just so Robert Sarver could ruin another Phoenix team...I'd rather see the Yotes intact in another city versus letting Sarver touch this team.

  4. I knew it was bad last year when the Wings tickets were normally priced — they used to double them for us, Chicago, San Jose, and a couple other teams that travel well (and also account for a majority of the transplanted population's allegiances). But 8k in attendance for game #2 is pretty pathetic.

That being said, simple logic explains the drop off from game one: it was a Wednesday night in PHX. Anyone who has lived here knows what it's like to leave work early and sit on I10 for an hour or two and get to the game halfway through the first. It sucks. Glad I like 10 minutes away for the few times I am there every season. AWA (now US Airways Center) was at least centrally located. If you live in the East Valley, it's easily 100 miles round trip and a couple hours in traffic. Not worth it to a lot of people here.

I still maintain that the only reason this is even an issue is because they moved the team to BFE. They had decent attendance when they were downtown (though the seating at AWA was pretty bad). My point illustrated:

Couldn't have said it better myself. I live in the East Valley and work Downtown...I'll make the journey on a Fri/Sat/Sun, but weekday games are almost impossible to get to on time given traffic.

  5. The divisions for the Pac-10 have been announced. They are going North/South, with Cal and Stanford going with the Oregon and Washington schools. 9 game schedule, with 4 cross-divisional games each year so that the NoCal will play SoCal each year, while Oregon will play the SoCal schools every other year.

The title game for 2012 will be hosted the team with the best conference record, but no tie-breaking system has been set.

The ASU President in his opening comments did say, "soon to be the Pac-12". Larry Scott also said, Pac-12. They are changing their name next season. They will have equal revenue sharing for media revenues. If it is less than $170MM in a given year, UCLA and USC would get an additional $2MM

Alignment looks good to me! Cant complain with ASU keeping USC, UCLA and gaining the new schools.
