  1. It's official: SVG's coming back and will run a partial schedule in all 3 series next year. I think that's the right call - he's obviously good enough to be a threat at every road course, but it wouldn't be smart to throw him straight into full-time Cup with no experience running ovals. I expect he'll be FT Cup in 2025 if everything goes to plan.

  2. With the classic stripes and the modern numbers, Miami has never looked better than they do right now. I'd be fine with a 2001 throwback every once in a while - that team was one of the greatest of all time and should be honored as such - but for the most part all that weird piping and side panels should stay in the 2000s where it belongs.

The four uniform combos will be quite different than each other, not just switching out pants and jerseys and helmets. One will be timeless, traditional. Another will be traditional but modernized. One will get wild with the bull theme. One will have the H-Town blue tribute. One was taken from player feedback and be very mean and tough looking.

    ...oh no. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh no.

    Eh, I'd disagree that it "messed up" the North Stars, myself; at least not until the twilight years in Minnesota. The jerseys they had before those were pretty solid and kept black and gold equal in the hierarchy;

There's something to be said about black as a color being a great supplement to an otherwise-bright color scheme to add just a little more punch. The problem, as with anything in sports aesthetics, is there'll inevitably be those who take a good idea and push it way too far for their own good (see: BFBS Mets, like every NHL third jersey from the initial batch, gradients and printed designs, etc).

Also, this unused uniform was incredible:

I know it's BFBS, but something about it just works.

The sentiment behind the all black Gators uniform is nice, sure, but what a boring freaking uniform schedule. No orange at all for the first time in how long, maybe ever?

First time since 2010. Urban hated the orange pants and only ever wore them once in his tenure (2005 vs Alabama, a 31-3 loss).

Heh...who besides me remembers the time when the Florida Gators were primarily ORANGE and white?? I know, rather short period of a longer overall history, but still...

Charley Pell switched the primary to orange in 1979, but Spurrier changed it back to blue when he took over in 1990, only keeping the orange helmet with the script Gators from the previous look.

I think Napier might share Spurrier's feelings on orange, considering how the orange jerseys still haven't been worn under his tenure and the orange pants only once (the Vandy game... which probably explains their absence this year). Aside from the new black uniform, it's my only complaint about his aesthetic choices.

The new shade of gold is great.

However, that's about the only upgrade from last year's uniforms. The helmet V looked better in black and the jersey is simply too plain. I hate how overused "practice jersey" is when it comes to describing uniforms (example #1: Jaguars)... but this really looks like a practice jersey with its exclusively black and white color scheme and no design at all. Even if stripes were a no-go, gold number outlines/cuffs or a chest wordmark would be enough to make it work for me. It just has nothing.

  8. Let's be honest, Michigan has 3 games all year - Ohio State, Penn State, and I'll add Michigan State because that's a big rivalry. Harbaugh will be back for those (and the 6 other conference games, but they could sleepwalk through those with or without him). They'll be fine.

My favorite part of these is how they shoe-horned the military salute with the BFBS.

Still wish this wasn't happening, but if they *have* to do black this is one of the best possible outcomes. The master stripe is prominent and properly applied, script Gators is still on the helmet, the only real misstep is the script Gators also appearing on the chest but that's not a huge deal. Dare I say, this is the best "off-brand" alternate they've ever done... but considering the contenders are the gator skin, that one with one orange shoulder, and a couple of Pro Combat ones, that's not too high of a bar to clear.

Noah Gragson requested his release from LMC

That might be the official story, but I'm sure what really happened was they told him his options were being fired or "choosing" to walk away and save face. Regardless, I'm sure he'll have a good truck or Xfinity ride next year - I'm actually thinking a return to JRM might be in the cards. Depends on what sponsorship he can keep/find, I suppose. As for the 42, Nemechek is the rumored frontrunner, which will go along nicely with their switch to Toyota next season.

Bob Pockrass tweeted out that Front Row has exercised their options on both McDowell and Gilliland for Cup next year. Team was interested in a third cup for Zane Smith, but in the end they decided they didn't want to start over with another rookie. Zane Smith is free to look elsewhere.

Considering that Smith was one of the names SHR was reportedly interested in for the 10 (the other was McDowell, who's now off the table), I'd expect that's where he'll end up. Either that or we get a bit of a shuffle where Burton and his Dex money go to the 10 and Smith takes over the 21.

  11. Yeah, I was expecting Cal and Stanford to get at least some interest due to their academic prestige and Bay Area market, although I'm still doubtful the ACC would see any monetary benefit from adding them (which is what all this is really about). As for Oregon State and Washington State, it seems they have no other options but the Mountain West. They'll join the fairly short list of schools that used to be in a power conference and no longer are: UConn, USF, Tulane, Rice, and SMU are the others as far as I'm aware.

Edit: Also Sewanee, Chicago, Idaho, and Montana, but those were all prior to WW2.

Florida finally fixed the stripe on their orange pants. I hope this means they also fixed the orange jersey so the stripe is consistent from head to toe.

The Gators used to have the proper stripe on the pants. However, when they added an orange jersey, they broke continuity from the master stripe. So the pants matched the helmet but the orange jersey was a recolored version of their blue jersey.

    spacer.png

Florida then double down with their master stripe mayhem. Instead of just fixing the jersey, they changed the orange pants to match the orange jersey stripe.

    spacer.png

Hopefully this means Florida will have a consistent stripe across all garments, regardless of color.

    FINALLY!

If a black alternate is the price we have to pay for fixing the stripes, I'll gladly take it.

The Ducks and Huskies already have been “vetted and approved” by the Big Ten to join the conference, sources said. However, the Big Ten does not want “the Pac-12’s blood on its hands,” by taking Oregon and Washington before any other schools leave the Pac-12, sources said.

This circus might just be getting started.

The whole Syracuse-Illinois thing wouldn't be an issue at all if the team calling themselves the Orange didn't insist on prioritizing navy instead.

Someone needs to tell this to the Texas Tech RED Raiders as well.

I don't like the Hawks uniforms. The striping on the side is too busy, the font is lifeless, not a fan of the white jersey saying "ATLANTA" instead of "HAWKS" and the logo on top of the stripes on the shorts looks like a sticker because the line width thickness doesn't agree with the stripes (the logo should be sitting on the front of the short leg where it can breath instead of on top of the stripes).

Going to a classic look was smart but they're pretty forgettable.

I'm a big fan of the way the black alternate handles the stripes:

I wish the same treatment was used on the home and away.

  16. So, Chrome decided to do a big red security popup when I tried to go to the most recent page of NFL Changes 2023:

    Screenshot-2023-05-27-at-3-34-52-PM.png

Once I go into details and manually go to the page anyway, it still has this up:

    Screenshot-2023-05-27-at-3-28-03-PM.png

As well as a little "dangerous" marker next to the address:

    Screenshot-2023-05-27-at-3-30-31-PM.png

It's nothing more than a nuisance right now, since I obviously know this site is safe, but yeah it's probably not great to have stuff like that come up. I don't know what, if anything, can be done, just thought I should make it known in case it wasn't already.

  17. Salt Lake and Quebec will make their cases, probably a few others as well, but I’d still put my money on Houston. They fit what the league’s been looking for perfectly - massive American cities with lots of room to create new fans. With the right ownership, I can definitely see it working.

Quebec is a pretty sure bet for success, but ironically that probably hurts them if this isn’t a “we need a place to play and we need it NOW” situation like Atlanta to Winnipeg was (and with the news that the Coyotes will be back at Arizona State next year, it doesn’t appear to be). From the league’s perspective, they’ll be fans whether they have a team or not. With an NHL caliber arena and fanbase ready to go at any time, they might be more valuable as a relocation threat than as an actual franchise.

  18. Reasons this shouldn’t and won’t happen:

    - A third team in Florida? Really?

    - SeaWorld is a genuinely awful location for a stadium

    - The state/county wouldn’t approve that much public money, nor should they

    - Other cities have much stronger cases for a team

    Reasons why this should happen:

    - I would like it to (although preferably without the public money, and more importantly a better name)

Yet it's likely that the reason why so many teams do have an all-black jersey is because they know consumers, like you, would prefer them. And I'm sure they have the data to support the fact those sell even better if consumers know they're representative of an actual on-court look for the team. You force them into their team colors only, they run the risk of losing sales.

I don't know that for sure, of course. But you can follow the logic to imagine how team marketing executives likely think.

This isn't me disagreeing with you.  I'm of the purist class that thinks teams should have two uniforms and a throwback and leave it at that.

I can't find where it was said now, but I remember one of the stated reasons for the Magic switching the designations so black was the Icon and blue the Statement was that the black sold a lot better than the blue. I'm sure other teams have seen the same trend in their sales, especially the ones that don't usually use black.
