Spoiler

With this set of three teams, we're headed into the heart of Texas. Keep that phrase in mind as we take a look at the teams for the cities of Waco (way-coh), Hewitt, and Bellmead. All three cities are located in McLennan County in Central Texas.  Along with Concho Valley, I believe this association was the other assocation I moved from the Northern Conference to the Southern Conference in order to even things up at 18, conference-wise.

Waco is around an 90-minute drive south of the DFW Metroplex. Along with being the county seat, it is also the most-populated city in McLennan County with a population of ~145,000. One of the city's nicknames is the "Heart of Texas", which explains the Heart of Texas SC team name and the secondary logo of the plain heart with the "TX" state code. The two blue colors of the team and on the primary kit stem from the city flag. The maroon and white colors on the secondary kit allude to Dr Pepper, the pepper soda that was created in the 1880s by Brooklyn-born pharmacist Charles Alderton at Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco. The diagonal-split design gives a nod to Dr Pepper's first slogan, which was "Drink a bite to eat at 10, 2, and 4!". Vintage bottles and cans also allude to this slogan, which was also known as "Dr Pepper Time". Downtown Waco also has the Dr Pepper Museum, which was the first-ever building that was built for the bottling of Dr Pepper. The green and gold colors on the tertiary kit stem from the Baylor University Bears athletic teams. The cross on the shirt alludes to Baylor being the largest Baptist university in the world.

Hewitt (pop. ~16,000) is ~9 miles south of Downtown Waco. The secondary "H" logo with the heart stems from the city's logo. The team adopts the darker blue color from its parent team of Heart of Texas SC. From there, the two kits are self-explanatory.

Bellmead (pop. ~10,500) is a mere 5 miles north of Downtown Waco. The green and gray colors of the Heart of Bellmead SC team stem from the city's logo. The secondary team logo also alludes to the city's logo. From there, the two kits are self-explanatory.

The names on the back of the jerseys are:

  • Former NFL player Derrick Johnson, who was born in Waco and was #56 throughout his career.
  • Former U.S. Senator Tom Connally, who was born in Hewitt.
  • Jasmine Neal, the current mayor of Bellmead.

The sponsor for all three teams is Jobe's, a maker of fertilizers and organic gardening products headquartered in Waco.

Spoiler

We'll be heading out to West Texas for this set of three teams. The "Petroplex" name for the association stems from the informal name for the Midland-Odessa Metro Area. All three teams for the cities of Midland, West Odessa, and Andrews are located within the Permian Basin, a large sedimentary basin that is also the largest petroleum-producing region in the United States.

At a population of ~132,500, Midland is the larger of the two principal cities of the Petroplex, which is around a 4.5-hour drive east of El Paso. It is also the county seat for Midland County. The two teardrops in the center of the Permian Basin SC logo are meant to resemble the letters of "P" and "B", for "Permian Basin". The "Roughnecks" nickname stems from what the top workers of an oil drilling crew are called. The blue team color comes from Midland's city logo, the red color comes from Odessa's city logo, and the black team color represents the oil produced within the Basin. The primary kit is meant to resemble coveralls that are worn by roughnecks at an oil drilling rig. The white-to-black gradient shirt on the secondary kit is meant to resemble a shirt soaked with oil. The orange, white, and black colors on the tertiary kit stem from the University of Texas Permian Basin Falcons athletic teams.

The West Odessa CDP (pop. ~33,000) is ~31 miles west of Midland in Ector County. Odessa, the other principal city in the Petroplex area, is named for the port city in Ukraine. Therefore, the blue and gold colors for West Odessa SC stem from the colors on the flag of Ukraine. The team logo features a gold oil derrick in the center of the roundel (the "O" in Odessa), and up on top is a blue crown that can also resemble a letter "W" (for "West"). This explains the "Oil Kings" nickname. The two team kits are meant to resemble recent kits from the Ukrainian Men's National Team.

Andrews (pop. ~13,000) is ~44 miles northwest of Midland, and it is the county seat for Andrews County. The city is named for Richard Andrews, the first soldier to die in the Texas Revolution. Like the "Roughnecks" nickname above, the "Ginzels" nickname also stems from a term used at the oilfield. However, a "ginzel" is a slang term for a worker of the lowest "rank", often a worker with no oilfield experience at all. Since Permian Basin SC II is a B-team, the primary kit is a virtual copy of its parent team's primary kit. The sky blue and red colors on the secondary kit stem from the city's logo.

The names on the back of the jerseys are:

  • Former NFL player Ryan Tucker, who was born in Midland and was #72 for his eight-year stint with the Cleveland Browns.
  • NFL player Marcus Cannon, who attended Odessa High and was #61 for his stints with the New England Patriots and the Houston Texans.
  • Pro golfer Chad Andrews, who was born in Andrews

The sponsor for all three teams is REXtac, a polymer producer headquartered in Odessa.

Spoiler

For today's set of three teams, we're heading north from the oilfields of the Permian Basin to the cotton fields of the South Plains. An alternative name that I had for this association when I made it was "Cotton Kingdom Soccer Association". We'll be looking at the teams for the cities of Lubbock, Plainview, and Levelland.

Lubbock is around a 2-hour drive north of Midland. With a population of ~267,000, Lubbock is the largest city in and the county seat for Lubbock County in northwest Texas. The Lubbock area is the largest contiguous cotton-growing area in the world. This is due in large part to the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the world's largest aquifers, which the region relies on for irrigation of the cotton crops and others. Due to the aquifer being depleted at an unsustainable rate, water conservation efforts have been made with some progress.

The cotton ball serves as inspiration for all three team logos, with each logo having eleven puffs for the eleven players on the soccer field. The blue team color for the Cotton Kings SC stems from the water used to grow the cotton crops. From there, the primary kit is self-explanatory. The crown in the team logo also takes inspiration from the cotton plant. The seondary kit is a sponsor-designed kit. The sponsor for the Cotton Kings SC is Bahama Buck's, a shaved ice and smoothie company headquartered in Lubbock. The red and black colors on the tertiary kit stem from the Texas Tech University Red Raiders athletic teams.

Plainview (pop. ~20,000) is ~48 miles north of Lubbock, and it is the country seat for Hale County. The green team color for the Cotton Princes SC stems from the grass grown around the cotton fields. The crown in the top is my take on a prince's crown for this team. From there, the primary kit is explanatory. The shirt on the secondary kit is a color reversal of the parent team's tertiary kit shirt. The sponsor for the Cotton Princes SC is Regence Health Network (RHN), a primary healthcare system headquartered in Plainview.

Levelland (pop. ~13,000) is ~30 miles west of Lubbock, and it is the county seat for Hockley County. The tan color for the Cotton Knights SC is called "Dirt", which cotton grows from. The team is called the Cotton Knights SC; therefore, the team logo has a knight's helmet with a cotton ball detail. From there, the primary kit is self-explanatory. The navy blue and orange colors on the secondary kit stem from the South Plains College Texans athletic teams. The sponsor for the Cotton Knights SC is Butch's, a oil and gas servicing company headquartered in Levelland.

The names on the back of the jerseys are:

  • Former NBA player Craig Ehlo, who was born in Lubbock and was #3 throughout his career.
  • Country singer, actor, and businessman Jimmy Dean, who was born in Seth Ward, TX, which is just outside of Plainview.
  • Scientist, professor, and university president David J. Schmidly, who is a Levelland native.

Spoiler

We'll be headed into the northeastern corner of Texas for today's set of three teams. We'll be looking at the teams for the twin cities named Texarkana and the suburb of Wake Village. Although there are conflicting stories on how the name was coined for the area, the fact still remains that the Texarkana name is a portmanteau of the state names of TEXas, ARKansas, and LouisiANA.

Texarkana, TX is ~180 miles east of Dallas, and it sits on the west side of the Texas-Arkansas border. With a population of ~36,000, it is the largest city in Bowie County in Northeast Texas. "The Texas Siders" nickname for Texarkana SC stems from the Texas city being nicknamed "The Texas Side". The maroon, gold, and navy blue colors on all three kits stem from the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Eagles athletic teams. The blue and white colors on the tertiary kit can also be stemmed from the Texarkana College Bulldogs athletic teams. The Texarkana SC logo has one star on it in honor of Texas being "The Lone Star State".

Texarkana, AR sits just across the Arkansas-Texas border from its twin city in Texas. With a population of ~29,000, it is the largest city in and the county seat for Miller County in Southwest Arkansas. Like with "The Texas Siders" nickname for its parent team, "The Arkansiders" nickname for Texarkana SC of Arkansas stems from "The Arkansas Side" nickname for the Arkansas city. As the lone Arkansas team across both Texas Soccer Leagues, the cardinal and white colors for the team and on both kits stem from the University of Arkansas Razorbacks athletic teams. Instead of the lone star on its parent team's logo, the Texarkana SC of Arkansas team logo has a diamond with four stars. This is loosely based on the diamond on the state flag of Arkansas.

Wake Village (pop. ~6,000) is a mere 4 miles west of Downtown Texarkana. The nickname is self-explanatory. The orange and white team logo stem from the local Texarkana ISD, which Wake Village Elementary School is a part of.

The names on the back of the jerseys are:

  • Businessman, politician, and philanthropist Ross Perot, who was born in Texarkana, TX.
  • Former NFL player Rod Smith, who was born in Texarkana, AR and was #80 for the Denver Broncos.
  • Colonel Jonathan Meisel, the current commander of the nearby Red River Army Depot

The sponsor for all three teams is Infinit-I Workforce Solutions, a safety training management company for commercial truck drivers headquartered in the Texarkana area.

Spoiler

For today's set of three teams, we're headed south to the cities of Corpus Christi, Kingsville, and Portland. Corpus Christi is the eighth-most populous city in the state of Texas. Therefore, Corpus Christi SC gets the maximum four kits.

Corpus Christi is around a two-hour drive southeast of San Antonio. With a population of ~316,000, it is the largest city in and the county seat for Nueces County in South Texas. The blue team color for Corpus Christi SC stems from the city's flag. The seagull in the shield of the logo, "The Gulls" nickname, and the eight stars in the team logo all also stem from the flag. From there, the primary qnd secondary kits are self-explanatory. The green, blue, and gray colors on the tertiary kit stem from the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders athletic teams. The cross on the quaternary kit alludes to the Corpus Christi city name itself, which is a Latin phrase for "Body of Christ". This in turn alludes to the time in 1519 that Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda traveled to the area on the day of the Feast of Corpus Christi.

Kingsville is ~42 miles southwest of Corpus Christi. With a population of ~25,000, it is the county seat for Kleberg County. The city is named for Richard King, a riverboat captain who founded King Ranch in the early 1850s. From that time on, the ranch has grown to become the largest ranch in the country at 825,000 acres. King Ranch is also the sponsor of Kingsville SC. The Kingsville SC logo is a modified version of the ranch's logo, the "King Ranchers" nickname also stems from the ranch, and the brown color on the secondary kit also stems from the ranch. The gold team color is taken from the Texas A&M University Kingsville Javelinas athletic teams, while Kingsville SC adopts the blue color of its parent team of Corpus Christi SC.

Portland (pop. ~22,000) is ~8 miles northeast of Downtown Corpus Christi, and it lies just across Nueces Bay in San Patricio County. The city is roughly equidistant between the two Portlands in Oregon and Maine: therefore, the team is named Portland SC of Texas to reflect this. Both the team logo and the "Shining Gems" nickname stem from Portland's nickname of "Gem City by the Sea". The green team color stems from the city's logo, whereas with Kingsville SC above, the team also adopts the blue color of its parent team of Corpus Christi SC. The secondary kit is a virtual copy of the parent team's tertiary kit, minus the blue vertical stripe. The sponsor for both of Corpus Christi SC and Portland SC of Texas is Repcon, a construction, fabrication, and maintenance company headquartered in Baton Rouge, LA, but also has presence in Corpus Christi.

The names on the back of the jerseys are:

  • Former NFL player Larry Kelm, who was born in Corpus Christi and was #52 throughout his six-year carrer.
  • College Football Hall of Famer Dwayne Nix, who was born in Kingsville and was #82 for the Javelinas above, back when the university was named Texas A&I.
  • NASCAR driver Matt Merrell, who was born in Portland and whose truck number was #35 for his last season.

Spoiler

We've been to the extreme southern end of the state, and now we are headed to the northernmost set of three teams, which reside in the cities of Amarillo, Canyon, and Panhandle. By the way, speaking of panhandles, we're in the Texas Panhandle.

Amarillo is just under 2 hours north of Lubbock by car. With a population of ~200,000, it is the largest city in and the county seat for Potter County. The "Atomic" part of the Atomic Amarillo team name stems from the local major employer of Pantex, which is the only nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility in the country. The word "amarillo" is Spanish for the color of "yellow", which explains the "Atomic Yellows" nickname and the yellow team color. The black and yellow colors of the team have a double meaning in that those are the colors on the radioactivity hazard symbol (which is on the team logo) and they are also the colors for the Amarillo High School Sandies athletic teams. From there, the primary and the secondary kits are self-explanatory. The colors on the tertiary kit stem from the athletic teams for the three other high schools in the Amarillo ISD (Orange and white socks for the Caprock HS Longhorns, Royal blue and white shirt for the Palo Duro HS Dons, and Scarlet and black shorts for the Tascosa HS Rebels).

Canyon is ~19 miles south of Amarillo. With a population of ~15,000, it is the county seat for Randall County. The maroon and white team colors stem from the West Texas A&M University Buffaloes athletic teams. Both the red team color and the canyon in the team logo stem from the Lighthouse Rock of the nearby Palo Duro Canyon, which is featured in the city's logo. The canyon also explains the "Rock Climbers" team logo.

Panhandle is ~30 miles east of Amarillo. With a population of ~2,400, it is the county seat for Carson County. The gray team color is named "Cast Iron", which is what skillets are made from. The team adopts the yellow color of its parent team of Atomic Amarillo. The team logo fetures a map of the Texas Panhandle region rendered in yellow with the location of the town marked by a gray star. From there, the two kits are self-explanatory.

The names on the back of the jerseys are:

  • MLB pitcher Tucker Davidson, who was born in Amarillo and was #64 when he won the 2021 World Series for the Atlanta Braves.
  • MLB catcher Jake Rogers, who was born in Canyon and is currently #34 for the Detroit Tigers.
  • Brent Kirkland, the currently principal of Panhandle High School

The sponsor for all three teams is Plains Dairy, a maker of dairy products headquartered in Amarillo.

Spoiler

We're headed back east for today's set of three teams. We'll be looking at the teams for the cities of Tyler, Jacksonville, and Whitehouse. For reference, the cities are in between the DFW Metroplex and the Longview metro area.

Tyler is around a 100-minute drive east of Dallas. With a population of ~109,000, it is the largest city in and the county seat for Smith County. The city is named for John Tyler, who was the tenth president of the United States. All of the city's nicknames center around the city's cultivation of roses, which has led to it being the home of the largest rose garden in the country. For example, the Texas Rose City SC team name stems from one of those nicknames being "Rose City". This connection is further enshrined with the city's seal, from which the team's secondary logo is stemmed. The primary kit is also an homage to the roses grown and cultivared in Tyler, while the secondary kit is stemmed from the "T" in the city's seal and from the Tyler High School Lions athletic teams. The tertiary kit further establishes the rose cultivation connection.

Jacksonville is ~28 miles south of Tyler in Cherokee County. With a population of ~14,000, it is the most-populated city in the county. Whereas Tyler is known for its cultivation of roses, Jacksonville is known for its cultivation of tomatoes, which lead to Jacksonville being touted as the "Tomato Capital of the World". This explains the team name of Tomato City SC, the tomato in the team logo, and the team's two main colors, which are named tomato and tomato sauce. The team adopts the green color from its parent team of Texas Rose City SC. From there, the primary kit is self-explanatory. The white secondary kit is almost an exact copy of its parent team's tertiary kit. The sponsor for Tomato City SC is Builder's Best, an HVAC company that specializes in dryer venting headquartered in Jacksonville.

Whitehouse (pop. ~8,500) is ~11 miles southeast of Tyler. The team's identity is a bare-bones version of its parent team of Texas Rose City SC. The team nickname is self-explanatory. The blue color is adopted from its parent team, and from there, the two kits are self-explanatory. The sponsor for Texas Rose City SC and Smith County SC is Brookshire's, a supermarket chain headquartered in Tyler.

The names on the back of the jerseys are:

  • Former NBA player Mike McGee, who was born in Tyler and was #40 for his two championships as a part of the Los Angeles Lakers.
  • Country music singer Lee Ann Womack, who was born in Jacksonville
  • NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who attended Whitehouse High School and is currently #15 for the Kansas City Chiefs

Spoiler

For the penultimate set of three teams, we'll be heading into Webb County in South Texas. We'll take a look at the teams for the cities of Laredo, Rio Bravo, and El Cenizo, which are the only places in the county that are designated as cities.

Laredo is around a 2.5-hour drive west of Corpus Christi. With a population of ~256,000, it is the largest city in and the county seat for Webb County. The Laredo FC team logo features the city's flag in the roundel underneath a red chevron with seven other flags. This is a play on Laredo being nicknamed "The City Under Seven Flags". The team's "Red Sashes" nickname is derived from the primary kit which features a red sash on a white shirt. The secondary kit is all-black with only the collar being red. The green, white, and blue colors on the tertiary kit stem from the flag for the Spanish town that Laredo is named for.

Rio Bravo (pop. ~4,400) is ~14 miles south of Laredo. The Rio Bravo name is derived from what the Rio Grande is called by the Mexicans just across the river. The team logo singifies the city's location along the Rio Grande. The navy blue, blue, and orange team colors and the "River Rapids" nickname stem from the city's logo/seal.

El Cenizo (pop. ~2,500) is ~17 miles south of Laredo. The team logo is a simple one: a monogram composed of a big blue "E" and a small red "C". The blue color is adopted from its fellow team of Rio Bravo FC and the red color is adopted from its parent team of Laredo FC. From there, the two kits are self-explanatory. "The Ashes" nickname is derived from El Cenizo's English translation of "The Ashen One".

The names on the back of the jerseys are:

  • Former MLB player Freddie Benavides, who was born in Laredo and is #45 in his role as a coach for the Cincinnati Reds.
  • Amanda Perez Aguero, the current mayor of Rio Bravo

  • Elsa Degollado, the current mayor of El Cenizo

The sponsor for all three teams is Falcon (International) Bank, a regional banking institution headquartered in Laredo.
