Slightly bigger nets in hockey

Why does the NHL have such trouble calling the rules properly on a consistent basis? It seems like every season we hear about an intent to call obstruction consistently, it lasts a little while, then falls apart.

Because some imbeciles have been pushing that the reason there are so many concussions is that the game is moving too fast for its own good, so we need clutching and grabbing to slow it back down (as well as banning two-line passing). Let's ask Scott Stevens, Eric Lindros, Keith Primeau, and Stu Grimson about this kinder, gentler, trap-friendly NHL.

There's also the fact that the National Hockey League is in general a sclerotic, obstinate, and incompetent organization that fears and abhors progress of any sort that doesn't involve fast money, like Ponzi-scheme expansion plans. The Brendan Shanahan Headshot Crackdown followed the same trajectory: they started by dropping the hammer on guys who took liberties, they Embraced New Media~! in doing so, but they scaled back and back and back until it was perfectly okay for Niklas Kronwall to fly into some guy's head and not even bother youtubing it to say why. They said they were going to try and crack down on diving, too, and if anything, it's gotten worse. It's like watching an Irish guy make a New Year's resolution to quit drinking.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
