Looking at game programs it appears they wore different shorts throughout the '67 season.  This was a photo of Donald Kojis with the correct shorts.

The only images I've found of the Rockets wearing those shorts are from that one preseason game vs. Seattle and promo images like the one above. I've found no evidence that they were worn in a regular season game.

This is a really cool find.

Back in the '90s, I had a pretty decent collection of the NBA replicas from that era made by Champion. I still have two of them: Dikembe Mutombo in the Nuggets' navy and gold era, and a white Charles Barkley Suns jersey -- both from around 1993 or so.

As a Timberwolves fan, I also had a Christian Laettner jersey from that era, but I can't figure out what happened to it. So I began searching for these Champion replicas on eBay and was stunned to see how expensive they are.  Not just Laettner, either. Pretty much any Champion replica from the '90s runs for anywhere form $50 to hundreds of dollars. It's pretty odd for a product that, often, was a pretty cheap-looking replica.

I have quite a few Champion replicas, mostly Euro ones as they're much better quality than the US versions. I mainly collect Sand Knit but the replicas are getting very pricey now, and the authentics even more so. I often find it cheaper to just buy a blank and then customize it myself, got an '86 Bucks home and '90 Timberwolves home (which is silver, not white!) that I need to get around to putting numbers and NoBs on.

I can relate to sentiment that, if they were going to do this step, they should have done it while he was alive. But we also don't know the circumstances. I could imagine that being around to see your number retired for an entire league could just be one more fresh reminder that you're nearing the grave.

Considering Bill was against the Celtics retiring his number, and then insisting on it being done behind closed doors after they were intent on it, I'd hazard a guess and say he wouldn't be a fan of this move.

  4. Not a thrift find as such, but I paid a visit to my favourite vintage shop in Birmingham last week. They normally have a decent selection of US sports jerseys from the big 4 but it's mostly from the last 10-15 years. They had a few Celtics jerseys in stock so I had a browse, not really expecting much.

    I found this:

1987-88 Sand Knit replica (obviously customized since it has a NoB, which Sand Knit replicas lacked). It was covered in stains and marks, but they came right out after a wash. I've been collecting jerseys for over 25 years and this is maybe the 3rd Sand Knit jersey I've found in the wild over here - after the '87 Whalers jersey I found about 15 years ago it's easily my best find.

That Blazers example is the best example thus far...the slanted stripes have been around since just a few years after that.

The very next season, in fact. The Blazers have played 52 seasons and have worn the sash, or a variation thereof, for 45 of them.

I'd argue there isn't a more iconic uniform element in the NBA than Portland's sash.

The Lakers and Celtics wore throwbacks in December 1996 making this the only time the Lakers wore a road jersey and blue in The Forum. Also, Kobe didn't play in this game so if you see someone wearing this jersey with the gold NBA logo then it's something he never actually wore.

Also, the Hornets debuted their purple alternate at home against the magic to open the 1994-95 season.

Technically that was the Hornets' 3rd game of the season - 9th November, 1994. The team had to request permission to wear the road unis at home from both the NBA and the Magic.

2 more occurances - on March 17th 1986 the Jazz wore their old green uniforms at home vs Detroit, who wore their standard blue uniforms. They did the same on March 17th 1987, at vs. the Warriors, who again wore their standard road unis.

    Here's a pic from the 1986 game:

Also, guys I just wanted to say how PERFECT these Hornets uniforms are.

they are slightly better than the Rockets, but they pull off that mash up or different jerseys look damn near perfectly

    10/10

Get rid of the honeycomb pattern and I'd be 100% in favour of making them our regular unis.

I agree that European football teams copy each other's color schemes way too much, but realistically there's no way any of their colors will ever change. Hull City fans nearly rioted when the owners tried to rename them to Hull Tigers, imagine what would happen if a team changed the most recognizable thing about themselves.

We don't have to - just look at when Cardiff City's new owners changed their colour from blue to red, purely to appeal to the Asian market (despite the team being the fricking Bluebirds). Didn't last long.

I feel like these sets every team moved towards just mashing up generations which is an interesting concept. Outside of the sixers nothing really reflected anything in the city like they had in the past. Also surprised to see the Lakers ditch the legacy uniforms as they still had not made a jersey for Jerry West, Kareem, George Mikan, or James Worthy.

You realise that's the whole point? It's the NBA's 75th* anniversary, so this years' City unis are mashups of previous sets.

*actually 72nd, but that's a whole other topic.

  10. Really like that Nets jersey. Mavs... I like the wordmark and return of green & blue, and the shorts are nice. Everything else is terrible. And what does "MFFL" mean? Muthaf***in' Florida?

I was really hoping the Bucks would incorporate the Irish Rainbow into their mashup unis, but they seem intent on ignoring that era and its unis as much as possible.

Wait, so is that the jersey number on one side?  Was that done every season?

Yes, but it wasn't always done consistently - sometimes it would be the wrong number, sometimes it would be missing altogether.

That had to be a pretty convenient walk for a lot of Man City supporters.  Knowing nothing about how Maine Road evolved at all, the stands all look like they were built at wildly different points in time, or at least were designed by wildly different architects.

That's exactly right, the stadium was extended and rebuilt at several different times, resulting in a rather disjointed aesthetic, although I think that was part of the charm.

My grandparents lived about a mile and a half away in Longsight, it was a nice easy walk to the ground. As nice as Etihad is, it'll never feel like Maine Road to me.

Dominique Wilkins spent almost his whole career as a Hawk in the Pac Man unis, except for his last season in Atlanta in '93-94. He would be traded midseason to the Clippers for Danny Manning.

The Hawks changed to that uniform set for the 1992-93 season, so 'Nique had a season and a half in them. Not that that makes them "right', just saying.
