  1. I don't remember the timeline last year, but at what point did it become clear the Thrashers would be moving instead of the Coyotes?

On May 16th, reports surfaced that True North Sports and Entertainment was negotiating to purchase the Thrashers from Atlanta Spirit Group. The NHL and True North held a joint press conference in Winnipeg on May 31st to announce that a deal to buy the Thrashers had been reached. Finally, on June 21st, the NHL Board of Governors formally approved both the sale of the Atlanta Thrashers to True North Sports and Entertainment and the relocation of the franchise to Winnipeg.

If memory serves, there was a Glendale City Council meeting in early May that made it official that the city would pay the $25 million to keep the Coyotes. The Thrashers-to-Winnipeg reports quickly followed.

This is a different interpretation of "wrong" uniform, that much is certain. Here is another example.

David Cone pitched more games for the Mets than he did for any other team, so seeing him in a Mets uni isn't "wrong," especially for someone like me who grew up in the late 80s/early 90s. But here he is in black during his brief comeback in 2003.

  3. Bad news on the Islanders front. It looks like Wang is now seriously considering offers from outside the NY-metro area. This is from Chris Botta, former NYI PR guy, who always felt the Islanders would end up either in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, or Brooklyn:

Sources insist that he is utilizing his leverage to be prepared for 2015.

But here?s where it gets really dicey for the true Orange and Blue believers, and those ignorant folks ? namely, this writer ? who found the notion of the Islanders ever leaving New York inconceivable.

Wang does not want to leave Nassau County, and staying put remains his first choice. But when I asked top executives to confirm that Wang will only consider overtures from municipalities within the New York metropolitan area, I could not get a promise on or off the record.

?I can?t guarantee that anymore,? said one source on high. ?They are looking at options inside and outside of New York State. It would be misleading to say New York only.?

    So there you have it.

  4. Mets--my dad was a Giants fan until they moved when he was 7. He then became a Mets fan. I copied him.

Giants--my dad was a football Giants fan as well. I copied him again.

Islanders--originally a Ranger fan like my dad, but lost interest in hockey for a few years. When I started to follow the NHL again, I couldn't root for the Rangers because of owner James Dolan. I rooted for Montreal for a bit, hoping that they could catch the Yankees in championships. But I eventually settled on the Islanders, mostly because I've worked at a lot of their games the past few years and their staff has been great to me. I also felt bad for them when they were drawing 7,000 fans to games. And since I'm a Mets fan, I'm used to the losing.

Pitt Panthers--I went there. Simple enough.

  5. I was also at the Jets/Panthers game Monday night. Felt like a Thrashers game, and now I know that there's a NHL/NBA arena that has a more-outdated JumboTron than Philips Arena.

I take it you haven't been to the Nassau Coliseum.

Fun fact: my high school had a field trip the night this thing was unveiled in 1998 so I was there. We got to meet Gino Odjick before the game. I just looked for my autographed ticket stub but it is lost. How sad for me.

  6. That pretty much sums up what they are doing, according to this article.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/hockey/nhl/wires/10/08/2040.ap.hkn.jets.opener.0710/

"When we acquired this team, we had 125 people working for (the Moose),'' co-owner Mark Chipman said Saturday. "It's now up to about 175, but those 125 people had a very deep sense of pride in what we had done for the 15 years prior. So, to us, this is the same organization with a different name.''

"It's not like we're trying to distance ourselves from the past,'' he said. "We're just trying to forge ahead as the reincarnation or the next step of what we've been doing.''

  7. By the way, am I wrong or is there inconsistency between the link (http://wsrings.stadiumpage.com/) and the Jeter photo? The 2000 ring on the link does not appear to be in the photo. And the one on his middle finger is not on the page.

Maybe he's wearing the ring described in this article:

Usually, Balfour will design the best ring it can imagine before discussing the budget with team ownership. Management then brings in the veteran players to take a look, and to offer designing input. After the 1999 title, Roger Clemens was so impatient to show off his long-awaited champion's status that he designed his own hefty ring, with the help of a designer friend, to complement the team's official ring.

Jeter hasn't looked at his rings in a while, but says his favorite is still the one custom-made by Clemens.

"When we get rings, a lot of people get them," Jeter said. "The idea of having a ring that only the players got - the players, coaches and The Boss - that was pretty cool."

  8. Funny - I go to StadiumPage.com all the time (and the Stadium Graveyard page), and never even noticed the WS Rings extension. Looks like I have a new bookmark to add.

I just really launched the World Series Rings site to the public in the begining of October (thats why you probably missed it before). Had I known this tread was here in the first place, it would have saved me some time looking for some of these.

Great work with all of your sites!
