Not MLB but, I've been hearing this about the Argos for years and years and a new stadium hasn't helped them.

Obviously different sport, different city, heck, different country.

I'm just skeptical about that argument.

The Argos are an interesting case to examine on their own. One way that I feel like they'd be different in this case is that their games are broadcasted nationwide on TSN, so for all we know 90% of those viewers could be Riders fans out in Saskatchewan who live and die by the CFL and wouldn't be able to go and see most Argos games in person.

As for the Rays, I feel like there is still a lot of potential there. I can't really state my reasons without saying what almost everybody else has said multiple times, however I feel like a good market to compare to Tampa with a lot of things is Atlanta. Sure, Atlanta's metro population is about twice the size as Tampa is, but they're both cities that have a ton of transplants and have both at one point had stadiums that are located away from the fanbase. The Braves are 30 years older than the Rays and have had lots of success over the years, but even that didn't do a whole lot for their attendance, even when they were good (but still slightly better than the Rays). But the main reason I compare them is to see how the Cobb County experiment goes for the Braves long term. From what I've seen so far, it is going very well for them. Their average attendance is higher now than it was in some of their more recently competitive years. I'm sure that may drop off a little bit if they still suck in 3 or 4 years, but only time will tell. I feel like if the Rays do something like that and bring the ballpark closer to Tampa (which might be a while since they're stuck in their agreement with St. Petes), the numbers will rise and they will become a viable market, or at least see some moderate success.

Speaking of the NHL and bad business, what will it take for hockey's AAA to enjoy the knd of stability AAA baseball does?

A decade ago, 16 of the markets, this coming season, weren't in the league. Hell, go back three seasons, and it's still a third of the league, to turnover.

I feel like we're still at least a couple of years away from that happening, especially now with the trend of teams moving their AHL teams to be near their parent clubs (i.e. Western expansion, Belleville, Laval, etc.). There are still a few that have teams nowhere near where their parent club is, such as Utica. Though at the same time, the AHL markets have never really been very stable aside from a select few in the northeast (Hershey, Rochester, etc.). The turnover rate is always fairly high compared to some other leagues.

  3. A few jerseys are missing from the OHL section:

Saginaw Spirit alts (worn starting 2016/17)-

I also noticed that a lot of the special even jerseys haven't been added in a few years. Is that because there are now too many to add, or has nobody just been keeping track over the last couple of years?

  4. Admittedly I gave on following this circus. I just thought the eye roll over EA's decision was ridiculous. They have to worry about their own asses and were in no way contractually obligated to have Kane on there in the first place so removing him really wasn't a big deal.

So just accuse a person of something, then sit back and enjoy how that person loses everything, without being found guilty ? Your co worker or neighbour could be plotting stuff right now . America :censored: yeah !

I'm sure that Patty was heartbroken that he didn't make the cover of an NHL game for the second time in his career. I have to also stick with the consensus that it was the correct PR move by EA to remove him from the cover. I'd rather play it safe too.

  5. We have a new Hurricanes family this year:

I dug up last years picture for reference.

So judging by the new pictures stick man left his wife and children, started stalking some girl with his telescope, started dating her, had a couple of kids and started getting stuck going to Canes games with them and the rest of her family. I'm guessing the last picture is them celebrating the Canes winning the draft lottery, since there is no other reason for them to celebrate anything else at that rink.

  6. Thoughts on the Plymouth Whalers moving to Flint, anyone? As a Wolves supporter (although this season, not so much), I am happy to see the stinking Whalers cease to exist, but I'm wondering if importing a minor hockey team will do any good for a city that needs an economic boost, like Flint.

It has been said that the CHL leagues (OHL, QMJHL and WHL) are second only to the NHL in quality of play...I trust Flint will embrace their Firebirds wholeheartedly.

As for Plymouth, wonder what the news is on the USNTDP team in the USHL moving there from Ann Arbor?

As far as I know, it's happening.

It is happening. The building was sold to USA Hockey a few months ago. That was a big part of the reason behind the Whalers move to Flint.

As for the economy, it could certainly help if marketed correctly. Saginaw would be a good example of how it could possibly help. They do a good job at advertising the area around the league. I don't know if they still do this, but they used to have a Saginaw Tourism table set up in some of the other rinks when the Spirit were in town to advertise the area and some of the things that were nearby. It certainly does work and trips to that area are some of my favourite and I have heard that many other people enjoy them.

I also have a good feeling that Flint is going to do a great job in supporting the Firebirds.

  7. Hamilton, being a satellite of Toronto and its major international airport, makes it an ideal location for a number of NHL cities. Its arena is too big for major-junior (it's too big for the AHL, too). Meanwhile, Belleville is the kind of place where the OHL should be thriving (and I saw no indications that it was failing). Combine it with St. John's hanging on as a waystation until ANOTHER team parks its farm club in its suburbs, and I don't think this suits everyone well.

While it wasn't exactly failing, it hasn't really been thriving that much over the last couple of years. The owner had been trying to get a new rink for a few years now. As much as I like their rink, it's pretty outdated as far as modern OHL standards go. At the same time, the team hasn't exactly been the best either over the last couple of years and attendance has dropped significantly with it. It's too bad that they are moving, they have some pretty good fans and when that team is good, their rink is quite a rocking place (the 2008 finals being the best experience I can think of with that).

As for Hamilton getting an OHL team, even though I've been very critical about that market for years I kind of want to see how they do. Major junior hockey has change a lot since they had their last team in the early 90's and has become a much bigger deal than it was then. I could see this doing better than the AHL since they now won't be watching the Habs prospects in Leafs/Sabres territory for one. Also because there is a little more emphasis on building a contender with the OHL that isn't exactly something that is seen in the AHL.

  8. In a league that at the time included Sterling, Dolan, Kohl, Cohan, Bennett, and Sarver, the Maloofs were considered the worst owners in the NBA during most of their time in the league. In GaryWorld, this apparently makes them a qualified candidate.

You're still new to this NHL thing, so I'll give you some free advice. Never underestimate the depths to which the NHL will sink to in order to land owners. Sad as it may be? I wasn't surprised in the least to hear the NHL was considering the Maloofs.

...unless your name is Jim Balsillie.

  9. Nothing will supplant the Roughriders in Saskatchewan.

And even then, it's the whole province. Once a week games means that people here in Saskatoon and the other towns can drive up to Regina and watch the game.

A hockey team that has to fill 41+ dates each year isn't going to work in Saskatchewan.

Plus the Roughriders play in the summer too, and the driving would be much easier then compared to in the winter.
