If you lived through the eagles kelly green era of the 80's and 90's you would know this reasoning does not hold water. Their kelly green was basically an off the rack russell athletic stock green that matches extremely closely with current jets green, alternatively nobody if nike's stock green was used and it was not 100% accurate, nobody would be able to tell. You could easily do a cunningham era or other simpler throwback by ordering some stock green jersey and throw some numbers on them. If you wanted to get crazy you could even screen some  birds carrying football on them.

Yeah it did seem a little odd. They make enough close to it. Only thing I could think is they just didn’t have the surplus of those fabrics in that color on hand to make sure they were ready on top of all the other stuff they’re doing. But really just seems like a we didn’t rush it / get it in on time thing.

By my math the owner of the team had the last 20 years to go back to the old uniforms. Lobbying a decade for multiple helmets to bring back uniforms was a terrible tactic for him to get what he wanted when he had the power to change any time he wanted.

Being able to do both again though is the point. Not necessarily for the Eagles, but for all teams. A lot of looks get to come back now, a lot of looks this community holds as the peak designs teams have had.

  3. In the full interview Lurie discusses that part of the delay is Nike doesn’t have the color for the materials used for this on hand, need to make it. Should be fairly straightforward, not nearly the task that was recreating midnight green was. And when they do come it’ll be as close to the Cunningham/ Buddy Ryan look – Kelly green helmet and jersey, Silver pants, and double bands of Kelly on a white sock.

He also stated that the Black might be a one year thing, official word that it is a 2 shell rule essentially now. But that he’s going to push the league to go to 3 so they can keep it in 2023 and beyond.

If the league says no the Eagles would probably go back to midnight green helmets for the all-blacks for that year. But potentially could see them redesigning it to the throwback template.

The Eagles use a lot of neon green accents in their social media, website, and their stadium.  Wonder if they could pull off the 80’s Bucks multi-green on their uniforms.

Yeah, I think it’s kinda been the plan for a couple years. Maybe not fusing it into the main look, but for the Kellyish Green throwback to be tied into things. I fear what Nike getting to do an update that uses it would look like for the base set.

I’m sure the NFL kinda let it be known they were doing away with the one shell rule a couple years ago because Lurie constantly pushed for that at the owners meetings and then just stopped. Few years go by and it’s quietly passed without owners needing to vote on it.

It’s also just a poppy color that makes things easier on designers for social and stadium stuff. The Eagles’ color palette is incredibly drab.

Not sure what jersey they'd wear it with since 2023 is the first year they can wear a kelly green jersey (unless they secretly put in for it back when the world was ending in 2020, which is unlikely).

It has to be black, right?  Just not sure how the rules work - like can they wear a black alt helmet next year then switch it to kelly green in 2023 when they (presumably) have those jerseys ready to go?  Or if they go black, would they be stuck with it for a few years?  Who the hell knows in this wacky era of NFL fashion we're living in.

Do we know if it’s a two helmet rule now or is it however many they want?

I’ve wondered if they’ll shift the black to having Kelly green accents…. so if it is just two helmets they could introduce the Kelly green helmet this year if that’s the case.

I hope the eagles don't have throwbacks still in their style guide since the last one's they wore were the plain ones. And I'd love to see them throwback to either the Jaworskis or Cunninghams.

Would be happy with both, have a feeling they’ll lean that late 80s-early 90s era. Simpler and they can do more with it as a permanent addition.

It’ll happen this year or next year, Lurie was one of the main people pushing to get rid of the one-shell rule for awhile. Have a feeling the league quietly told the Owners they were ditching it themselves so no owner had to publicly vote on it and potentially be seen not caring about player health to some people.
