  1. The first ring is the so called "NCAA Championship Ring" that is given to the team by the NCAA.  The NCAA has made these "NCAA Champion Rings" and "NCAA Final Four Rings" since 1988 which was the 50th NCAA Championship for Basketball. They usually look the same or at least they did in the early years.  In the last few years the teams that make it to the Final Four still do get rings from the NCAA but they look a lot nicer than in the early years.  The Champion gets a slightly different NCAA Ring as that design has changed a lot in recent years.  The latest UNC ring is the "School Version Ring"  That ring will look totally different each year.  The school could still get a separate conference ring too so they could end up with as many as 3 rings for the winning basketball team.  The UNC Foot logo has been used for years by the football team but this is the first time i have ever seen the UNC Basketball team use that logo for a championship ring.

  2. Here is your first look at the new 2017 North Carolina National Championship Ring.  It was made by Jostens.  Traditionally the ring account for the Tar Heels basketball team has been with Herff Jones as i knew the HJ Ring rep for the basketball team but when Head Coach Roy Williams got there they have used pretty much every major ring company to make their rings and National Championship Rings.  The 2005 National Champs ring was made by Balfour , the 2009 ring was made by HJ.

Did anyone else who saw the Dr. J NBA Finals promo spot on ABC notice anything strange when he is shown putting on what looks to be his 1983 Philadelphia 76ers  NBA Championship Ring.

For those who don’t know what I mean back in November of 2011 Dr J sold a large amount of his personal Basketball treasures through SCP Auctions.  They said more than 140 items from Julius Erving's personal collection sold for a record $3.5 million.   Among the highlights: His 1974 New Jersey Nets ABA championship ring sold for $460,471; 1983 Philadelphia 76ers championship rings sold for $244,240; 1983 All-Star game MVP trophy ($115,242); final game worn jersey from May 3, 1987 ($88,826); and 1974-75 ABA MVP trophy ($173,10).

SCP said the Nets championship ring set a World Record price for a sports ring.

So the question that comes to mind is in the ad is that really Dr J’s real one and only 1983 NBA Ring?? Chances are NO since he sold it for $244,240.  Now it could be an extra that he had made or the one that he sold at auction was the duplicate and either way the guy who bought the ring is going to be asking or calling SCP on Monday asking whats going on here if he bought Dr. J’s one and only ring why is he shown in the promo with his so called ring??  Now there is one more explanation and that could be they either borrowed someone else’s 1983 ring or Balfour made a quick sample of the ring since they made the original one back in 1983.

Lastly the more ironic thing happens at the end of the promo spot after he puts on this 1983 ring he says.  “You either have a ring or you don’t”  Even though Dr J won a ring in 1983 he might not actually or should not have it anymore.

I really like the trophies on the shank. Visible dig at UCLA putting the Victory Bell in the center?

Seems like this is a popular ring design all made by Jostens. They have used this same basic mold to make rings for Alabama and FSU in recent years. Here is the new 2016 Oklahoma Sooners Big XII Championship rings that the team just got a few days ago.

  5. Congrats to the New England Patriots for winning the Super Bowl last night.  Cant wait to see what Jostens does with the 5th Super Bowl Championship Ring.   Just released today is an updated TV commercial that ran before the football season started that shows Tom Brady going to see the doctor and he puts his 4 rings in a safety box for safe keeping.  At the same time they filmed an alternate ending and they added a 5th Ring and added the line "Roger That" as he puts the 5th ring into the box.  Clearly a dig at the NFL Commish.  It's pretty funny and all ring fans should get a kick out of it.

  6. Not a whole lot of new posts as of late but I thought I would share a bit of news for all of the ring fans out there.  As we all know the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series and the new Rings will be made by the Jostens ring company.   The new rings will be presented to the players before April 12 at Wrigley Field.   So after missing out on the NBA Ring Jostens rebounds and is making the newest high profile championship ring.  Cant wait to see what it looks like.

  7. The Broncos and Jostens did a very nice job on the new rings.  They look to be huge. I would love to see how big this one is compared to the Pats ring from last year.  I am sure we will be seeing photos or I hope to see a photo of the 2 rings side by side soon.   Now while we are enjoying the new Denver ring I just saw posted on the Twitter page of the owner of "Diamond Cutters" the company who made the first official Denver Super Bowl Champions ring in 1997 has posted a photo of what looks to be the 3 Denver Super Bowl Rings.  As we all know the 1998 (2nd) one was made by Jostens and of course the latest one (2015) was made by Jostens too.   In the photo you can clearly see that the ring they are showing is NOT the Jostens version of the 2015 Ring as the top is slightly different and the side that you can see is not the same as Jostens ring.  The 1998 ring looks to be a bit off too than the one that Jostens made. I had originally thought that DC might have sold the stones to Jostens or that the stones came from DC but after looking at the photos the last 2 rings are NOT made by Jostens.  So why would DC have recreated their own version of the 1998 and 2015 rings that look so similar to the ones that Jostens made??   You could say that these were the designs that DC submitted to the team but i dont think this is the case. I am sure one of these days this question will be answered or at least I hope it will be soon.

One odd thing thing with this photo from DCI is the new ring I would expect is far larger than the 1998 Ring and in the photo it does look larger but I am willing to bet the Jostens new one is by far way larger than the other 2 rings if they were shown side by side.

  8. The players are not susposed to sell them till they graduate or have no more eligibility left.  But these kids are 18-22 year olds and have needs and I would guess a few of them do sell rings before they are susposed to.  They just have to be careful not to get caught doing it.  As we all know of the Georgia Ring scandal that first brought this problem to the attention of the public and the NCAA and it was the Ring scandal at Ohio State that pretty much brought the attention of kids selling rings to the rest of the country who dont follow the world of Championship Rings.

  9. The 4 ruby colored stones I would say are for the 4 Saban titles that he has won since 2009.  Around the outer edge is a total of 16 marque (football shaped stones) these would represent the 16 National Championships that the Crimson Tide have won.  Yes this is the first ring to add the College Playoff Championship Trophy on top of the ring.   Its nice that Bama went with the yellow colored ring once again.  The only other Jostens made Saban Bama National Champs ring the one from 2009 was also made in a yellow non gold material.  I know that those rings look horrible in regards to the color of the rings.  The Yellow Lustrium rings the players got that year looked bad like the ring was tarnishing and had spots in the platting.   They didnt look at all like a yellow gold ring as they usually do.  In other years that I have seen Jostens YLTM rings the quality of the plating has looked better.   Just hope that this years batch of rings hold up otherwise they should make them in the silver looking LTM Rings since 10K yellow gold is not an option.   Speaking of Yellow 10K or 14K gold I do hope that the new Denver Super Bowl ring which should be released in a few months will be Yellow gold not white gold.

In regards to design the overall shape is nothing new that hasnt been done by Jostens.  I personally love the rings that go "across the finger" other words the rings that go left to right instead of the ones that go "along the finger" the ones that go up and down the finger. The reason nobody uses the across the finger style rings anymore is you can make a much larger ring that goes up and down than you can across the finger as you can only make a ring so wide before you cant close your hand. Short of making a double finger ring you prob wont see more super wide rings being made these days.

Here is a link to a rather funny story of how a Championship Ring was produced that had a misspelled name of the league.  I guess it happens.  Maybe the should proofread the designs before they make the actual ring.    But again no on caught the mistake on the first Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl ring for over 20 years and the mistake was never corrected.

  11. I swear i saw on twitter last week what looked like a NY Mets Ring and it could have been the new NL Champs Ring.  The ring had a very large Mets NY logo in gold on top of a rectangle blue stone and on the outside edge surrounded by diamonds. The reason why I dont know if it was the real ring that was leaked is that this ring has no writting on top of the ring so its not the typical championship ring and i could not see the sides. I have not been able to find that same photo that I saw last week its almost like it was pulled.  I didnt know the team and players didnt have them yet so it will be interesting to see if the actual rings match that photo of the ring I saw last week.

  12. Next to ZERO.  The only part of the ring that will have the super bowl 50 logo will be the side.  The Broncos might make the top of the ring to celebrate the 3 titles the will have won if they win the super bowl next sunday.   The Panthers winning their first super bowl will no doubt put the panthers logo somewhere on top of the ring.

The referee squad however will also get special Super Bowl 50 rings and the odds are good that they will put the Super Bowl 50 logo on top of that.  But again it wont be that big of a surprise as they have prob done that in past years.  We shall see but i fully think they will never put the Super Bowl log on top of the ring.

  13. NO Way. That ring is being sold on ebay as a fan ring. No way Jostens or who would be making the auctual rings for the Royals would let it slip. Remember what Jostens did just hours after Duke won the 2015 National Championship they had posted on their facebook page what looked like their new Ring and they had just won it hours after they won it. Clearly it was just a mock up ring that was posted to screw with the would be bootlegers who fake rings, It must have worked too as a few weeks after the photo was posted there were knockoffs of this fake mock up Jostens Duke ring on the market. I am sure when the real Royals World Series Ring comes out it will be much nicer than this fan ring that appeared on ebay,
