  1. I'm sure it has been asked before, but can any one from Portland say for sure that they would support what would most likely be a struggling franchise like the Panthers? I feel that we may go down the same road in Portland if the team's struggles would continue.

As far as hockey support, the Portland Winterhawks have a very supportive fan base. And hockey culture seems to be strong here historically. Last winter the local historical society held an exhibit on 100 years of hockey history in Portland. There are still fond memories of the old Portland Buckaroos.

None of that, though, translates directly into support. But in a good venue, and in a city that is known (at least with the Timbers and Blazers) to have among the more devout fan bases, I think it would be as safe a bet as Seattle.

Plus, the team may suck inititially, but it's not like the ownership and administration would move with it. If Paul Allen ends up owning the team, my guess is he would appoint Blazers' President Chris McGowan to a new leadership position overseeing both clubs. McGowan held a similar role in Los Angeles with AEG Sports in which he had leadership over both the L.A. Galaxy and the L.A. Kings when the club won its first Stanley Cup.

I don't see why Portland isn't at least on the radar then, other than the NHL is stupid.

I get it, actually. The NHL's always been a league that played the demographics game. Under Bettman it's expansion strategy has been a numbers game: Go to where the market is biggest and the support will follow. So Portland gets overlooked as long as Seattle is an option.

  3. From what I can tell, nobody in Portland with money wants to own a team.

Apparently Paul Allen has shown minor interest, but minor interest doesn't get a team.

Paul Allen in recent years has expressed interest in exploring the possibility of owning an NHL team. As The Oregonian's John Canzano reported in August, he's just going to bite unless it's a good deal. He apparently has no interest in paying $350 million for an expansion franchise, but would entertain the idea of paying $250 million for one that would relocate to Portland.

  4. That Charlotte Knights re-do is a mess. If we're have trouble making out exactly what's going on in the imagery, why would anybody else get it. Plus, one of those secondary logos — the one of a dragon with a sword in its sheath — makes it look like the dragon is stabbing itself.

Disappointed to see the Red Wings changing things up. Not a fan of their uniforms necessarily, but I've always liked the logo.

  5. I'm thrilled that Glendale has apparently wised up and this may be it for the Coyotes. I'm much less thrilled about them setting up a slapdash team in Seattle , rushing jersey/logos which will make the OKC Thunder's logo look like a painstaking design, and playing their games in a local ice rink.

Whose to say they aren't currently done/in the works?

Well, the Thunders' set should have been long finished, too, but instead they put it together in like a week. Besides, having a new identity ready would take foresight and a level of competence which the NHL really doesn't have.

You know who has a fantastic identity ready to go? Quebec City.

This is all just more ridiculous by the day.

  6. :censored: the haters.

Mike Smith was a godsend. He may have saved the team. Can you really move them, after all this success?

Yes. It is simply a financial decision. The other 29 NHL owners do not want the league owning the team, Glendale can't afford to foot the bill and a buyer that wants to keep them in Glendale has not emerged yet.

Success or not, that is a recipe for relocation.

Charger's right. Winning guarantees nothing in sports business. The North Stars weren't that far removed from an improbably Stanley Cup Finals run when they were shipped off to Dallas.

Whoa...I'd COMPLETELY forgotten about that one there.

(On another note: am I alone in really having LOVED that particular uniform for the Jazz???)

I would have loved it too -- for a team called anything other than "Jazz." The team name and mountain motif to me are contrasting themes that don't pair well together. But that's another well-beaten horse of a topic.

  8. Who cares? It's a thread on an internet message board. It really doesn't need guidelines that will restrict it to naming 5 more players and then hitting the graveyard.

    +1.

I know the title says "legends", but it's amusing to see others in the "wrong" uniforms. Chuck Knoblauch is not a legend, but he still looks weird in a Royals uniform.

And just because he may still be active (perhaps) does not mean Favre's Falcons uniform does not serve the same purpose as Namath's Rams uniform.

I agree. I enjoy this thread as is. My only problem is when people post images of hockey players without saying who they are. That's just a personal thing, since I'm not as much of an NHL fanatic as most people on this board. The names would be nice.

    Otherwise, keep it going.

  9. A few soccer ones,

Frank Lampard (jr) in a West Ham strip early on in his career (His dad is a bit of a West ham legend, but odd to see junior in the claret and blue!)

Saintsfan, thanks for a great addition to this thread. I've never seen Lampard in a West Ham Kit.

On a separate note, the Giants uniform worn by Csonka is a thing of beauty.

  10. Yeah, well, the NFL hasn't ever really pretended that its throwbacks were authentic, only that it's what the teams would wear today if they hadn't changed their uniform design.

Unlike baseball, which sometimes uses period cuts and materials, the NFL just takes old designs and drops them on the modern template.

But unlike baseball, wearing authentic period garb in an NFL game is liable to get a player killed, or at the very least put in a huge competitive disadvantage.
