My ONLY opinion that gives benefit of the doubt to manufacturers is that it's easier to create designs that look great in a graphics design program, while doing it in an actual real-world application can get complicated. But even this sentiment can easily be argued by the fact Maryland had those crazy airbrushed helmets, jerseys from Nike and UA in the past have been pretty detailed. But it does seem like lately, with Nike especially, they are going for simple and easy to apply designs (Jets boring triangles, Falcons triangle side panels, Cardinals basically recycling what the Lions did a few years back, etc)

But, if we ever saw anything like the Jaguars, Buccaneers or Browns uniforms from Nike's first round of having their hands on the NFL, people on these boards would have gasped at how bad they were -- even as concepts, which usually get more of a thumbs up for good work, even if they're crazy.

It is mind boggling that more of us didn't actually get jobs working in these areas, I even tried for a long time and couldn't get in anywhere. Right now somebody at Nike who really loves drop shadows, text on stripes and gradients has too loud of a voice and too many people scratching their back...

We can make whatever we want on here. We don't have to answer to owners, stakeholders, marketing execs, focus groups, etc.

Who knows how many times those people have gotten in the way of designs this board would love.

If the A's were relocating to Portland instead of Vegas, light blue would be a nice addition to their green and gold:

I love this scheme so much and wish some team would take it on.

I pitched a logo in these colors to the Maine Celtics when they were considering the name "Beacons" before they landed on "Red Claws". They liked it but it didn't work out. It's too good to not be used.

  3. As long as we're all sharing our Nuggets wishlists:

I loved their statement uniform from a couple years ago, before it was changed to a Harlem Globe Trotters jersey.

I'd simplify the color scheme a bit and remove the circular lettering setup then build a set around it.  Add some topographic lines into the navy part on the shorts if it feels boring, or make them more mountain-like. Done.

I disagree as I believe all parts of the uniforms should match. Not only the stripes, but TV numbers and the wordmark.  The best comment I've seen yet came from my Sports Aesthetics Facebook page, "this is why designers NEED to have OCD" so mismatched uniforms would not exist.

I'm genuinely interested in why people believe this. I don't necessarily disagree but I think it's not a cut and dry belief I hold anymore. Is it so fans wearing the jerseys and apparel out in the real world/in the stands all look like they are repping the same team? Or is it so photos of one game match photos of another game perfectly? The red jersey will not be worn next to the white jersey in any other setting than the uniform unveiling, so what's the importance of them matching exactly?

As a brand/logo designer my thoughts have evolved on the subject because it used to be important to "see the logo the same in every application", but it's become more common practice to have application specific logos that all come together to form a cohesive visual of a brand. Why are sports uniforms any different?

  5. From the maybe-possibly-probably not image of the pants behind the word jumble I am now expecting no dark cardinal color and no heavy use of orange. It's dumb, it's based on nothing, but who cares, this is the fun part where we are just envisioning the possibilities. I see a very similar red color still (if darker then it doesn't hit maroon), white shell with silver flecks and chrome facemask, 3D looking cardinal logo, pretty minimal red and white uniforms with some silver accents, deemphasis of black, and the flag somewhere on the 2 main uniforms. I suspect the orange color that has been mentioned time and time again is only used in the flag design and nowhere else in the uniform. This is all speculation and worth nothing to anyone, therefore I must post it.

Yeah, they better ditch all the black, blackletter font and the urban court graphic nonsense. I'd rather see them predominantly in blue, though.

If they are one of the teams changing this year (or next year) I'd bet they're leaning toward more of the blackletter look from the statement jerseys, not less. Personally, I'd prefer that to the current Icon and Association wordmarks.

    sadly, i do not

as for 2023/24 info, here's a nibble...3 teams are getting new main uniforms, 2 teams updating Statements, and 4 teams will have Classic unis.

My bet is on Suns, Mavs, & Wizards to get new unis. Just feels like it's finally the year for all 3 of them.

  8. Speaking of gradients, and trying to make sense of the info we've heard; both the Suns and U of AZ have used striped or 8-bit gradients, is there a chance the Cards go this route? It would explain the inclusion of orange, and might even explain the use of maroon and warm gray as well.

I made a fast and dirty version. I think this looks pretty good personally. All the inner most stripes are blue and the outer stripes are either black or silver depending on the backdrop.

I also add a thin black outline on the helmet logo. You can see one on the sleeve patch for the blue jersey and I never noticed it before but I kinda like it.

Trying something similar to the white uniform works but maybe not as well:

Blue with black outline would look good on both white and silver backgrounds, while the blue with silver outlines should just be used on black backgrounds.

  10. The Cards have been using this look on social for a little while, interesting here is the gradient from orange to maroon/cardinal on the left side and the orange drop shadow on the last name. The X and logo are still showing an athletic gold color but the drop shadow and top left are definitely orange.

  11. Seems at least possible that this Maroon and Orange business is on an alternate uniform only, right? Some have seen it, some haven't. It looks out of place with the white helmet and doesn't match the draft hats but seems legit? I'm betting on an alternate uniform going desert themed. Sand, orange, maroon, gray, more drab and dusty than the actual identity and uniforms.

  12. Kicking this off, Minnesota, Washington, New York, Indiana, and Dallas introduced their new Rebel edition uniforms today.  3.5 out of the 5 uniforms are black. I haven't read anywhere whether more teams will reveal later on or not, I DID read that Atlanta rejected their design because Nike didn't put enough thought into it. Wouldn't be the first time one of these designs was rejected (Dallas last year).

For what that is...it's actually not bad. Actually it's pretty spiffy! That is a nice little mountain/note motif going on in there; somewhere between the Jazz and Nike (not sure who's chiefly reaponsible for this particular design), I'll credit them for that.vMakes one wonder why the Jazz didn't feel led to incorporate all that motif into their branding in the first place. Maybe they will going forward...they wouldn't be the first team to adopt an All-Star design into their full-tike brand (see: Stars, Dallas of the late '90s).

Also see: Utah Jazz of 1996, All Star Game was in 1993.
