  1. Next up on the Adidas releases, Philadelphia, and, yes, we are seeing more 2022 USFL style creeping into the 2011 alt history USFL to be sure. Some rainbow style stripes on the jerseys, a doppler effect striping on the pants, but still very much the Stars being the Stars. By the way, the helmets are still a metallic gold. Hard to capture that in the imaging I am doing. It looks far more yellow than I would really like.
  2. To your questions: 1) Dallas would not get permission to use Jerry World. Jones, like Kraft, is a vehement "We should destroy the USFL, not work with them" voice in the NFL. So, Cotton Bowl seems the best option right now, but that could change over time. 2) Unlikely, it is such a small city compared to most USFL cities, and it really does not have a viable football stadium. Someone woudl have to build a new stadium in hopes of getting a team, and that seems unlikely. That does not mean that the Stealth logo is out of the question, just perhaps not in Omaha. 3) The question with San Diego is where would they go? The stadium issue is real, but the Raiders never left LA, so they sort of have a claim on the city. But, that means...? OK, now on to the first redesign of the Adidas era of the USFL. Birmingham is up first. The theme here is simplification (minimalism) as Birmingham uses simple designs (some borrowed from the 2022 USFL) and reduces the use of gold, especially in the White jersey. The look is clearly Stallions, with a lot of Bama feel to it, but it is more basic. The wordmark is simplified, but the Stallions do add a new secondary logo, the monogram B from the 2022 USFL. Some of the other designs will not be quite so minimalist, and one team makes a major decision about colors.
  3. Coming soon... new adidas looks for... Baltimore Birmingham Nashville Philadelphia We have 2 clubs that exist in the 2022 version of the USFL, will they start to move in that direction, hold their traditional look, or go a third route. We also have an old school team that has already deviated from its original look & city, and a team that has come a long way from its original WLAF design to a new NFL-inspired look. How will it evolve? All this, plus, on the alt history site, some news about possible movement towards a Dallas franchise. What identity will they take? All starting this weekend.
  4. 30th Season is 2012, so that is when you should expect to see some celebrating.
  5. Not ready to reveal any 2011 USFL designs quite yet, but I can show the new template for the adidas designs. First the image, then some notes. So, what is new? 1. New design template box, with a lot of 3-stripe adidas present. 2. New jersey template, with shorter sleeves and more defined cuffs. 3. The new template also includes adidas branding in 4 places. logo with "adidas" name on right chest. logo with "adidas" name on size tag (front bottom left) three stripe pattern on back of collar three stripe pattern on center of cuff 4. The pants have an adidas logo on the front of the right hip, which you cannot see here. 5. I tried to make the stitching on the jersey template a bit more noticeable, as it is on the adidas template (available with several college designs from the late 2000-2010 period.) 6. Other than that the template for pants, socks, and the newer helmet template are unchanged. So, a bit of heavy hand from adidas, but not so heavy as to impact the main design elements of each team's looks. No one will have huge triple stripes unless that is what their design would have anyway.
  6. After reading the news/rumors coming out, I am not holding out much hope for a USFL-dominant version of a merged league. I had hoped that the USFL's stronger financial position would mean that the XFL would all but get absorbed into a bigger, stronger, USFL, but that does not seem to be in the cards. Too bad, I much prefer the USFL's look and retro feel to the crazy red-bull & vodka induced designs, but it looks like we will see a mish-mash of both, at least as far as teams go. Too bad.
  7. Hey folks, quick thing as I work on wrapping up the 2009 season. Adidas has gotten the contract for USFL uniforms for 2011 and beyond (at least 7 years) and they are committed to 4 new designs per year, including a new jersey template, so expect to see some revision and some unique 'adidas" touches as we hit the 2011 looks. Still a couple of 2010 looks to reveal on the website, but you will always see them here first.
  8. If you go to the Newswire page and search for "1983" you can get all the recaps and standings pages there. You have to go to page 2 of the news, since it goes in reverse order, but they are there.
  9. So I am going to reply here and not on the XFL post, because I am more of a USFL guy, as many of you might know. As more news or rumors come out about the merged league I am getting more and more concerned that it basically means the end of the USFL "revival" of the league I loved in the 1980's. The New USFL was never that, but at least they brought back the names and identities of that great league. What I hoped for was that a USFL-XFL merger woudl basically be an expansion of the USFL with a few traditional cities (San Antonio, Orland, DC) taking on the old USFL names/logos and a few new cities (St. Louis, Seattle) keeping their XFL identities but with better uniforms more in the USFL style. So basically, what I was hoping for was this: 12 team USFL, starting in March (midway between USFL and XFL timeframes) EAST: Generals (@ Redbull or Rutgers), Stars (@ Franklin Field), Orlando Renegades (Merger of Arlington & Orlando), Federals (former DC Defenders @ Audi) SOUTH: Birmingham (@ UAB), Memphis (@ Liberty Bowl), New Orleans (@ Tulane), St .Louis Battlehawks (@ Dome) WEST: Panthers (@ Ford), Houston Gamblers (merged with Roughnecks @ Rice), Dragons (@ Lumen), and San Antonio Gunslingers (renamed Brahmas). IF they could keep 2 more, move Las Vegas to Oakland for Invaders and move (don't merge) Roughnecks to Arizona as Wranglers or Denver as Gold. But, what it looks like we are getting is mostly XFL teams with only the 3-4 hub cities from the USFL. So, mostly the end of the USFL as a revival/homage to the original league. Honestly, given the choice, I much prefer the USFL to the XFL. I even prefer (stylistically) the AAF to the XFL. The thought that I would lose the cool Gamblers logo for the trainwreck that is the Roughnecks look, or lose the Generals and Stars but keep the Guardians and Brahmas just makes me sad (both as a USFL fan and a fan of good design.)
  10. Hi Everyone, If you are interested in jumping into my Alt-History of the USFL, a history where the league never made the move to fall and where a big lawsuit win against the NFL put them in a position to continue all the way until the present, now is a good time to start following. My preview of the 2009 season will be posted on Saturday and Sunday, with Week 1 of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 5. I typically post a new weekly recap about every 2-3 days, so each season takes about a month (14-16 weeks of regular season, 4 weeks of playoffs, and 4 articles about the offseason from Sept-February) You can follow the logo and uniform updates here, but if you want to follow the league itself, you can always find it at this link. 2009 has a 28-team USFL playing its 27th season in the spring, with the following clubs: USFL ORIGINALS Oakland Invaders LA Express Arizona Wranglers Denver Gold Houston Gamblers Michigan Panthers Pittsburgh Maulers Birmingham Stallions New Orleans Breakers Memphis Showboats Tampa Bay Bandits Orlando Renegades Jacksonville Bulls Philadelphia Stars New Jersey Generals Washington Federals RELOCATED TEAMS Baltimore Blitz (from Chicago) Texas Outlaws (from Oklahoma) EXPANSION TEAMS Seattle Dragons (inspired by Barcelona Dragons of WLAF) Portland Stags (inspired by Edmonton Elks of CFL) Las Vegas Thunder (inspired by Orlando Thunder of WLAF) Chicago Machine (inspired by Montreal Machine of WLAF) St. Louis Skyhawks (inspired by WLAF Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks and XFL St. Louis Battlehawks) Ohio Glory (inspired by the WLAF team) Nashville Knights (inspired originally by the NY/NJ Knights of WLAF) Atlanta Fire (inspired by Birmingham Fire of WLAF and Arizona Hotshots of AAF) Charlotte Monarchs (inspired by London Monarchs of WLAF & Atlanta Legends of AAF) Boston Cannons (inspired by Boston Cannons of pro lacrosse) It all leads up to Summer Bowl 2009, with the logo below already in place.
  11. Not that I intended. But maybe there could be? And here is the final piece of the puzzle, the new Glory Uniforms, where you will see a lot of original elements from the WLAF (jersey sleeves in particular) along with a lot of use of the "buckeye".
  12. Third and final USFL Update for 2010: The Ohio Glory The Eagle gets an update. New logo, but botht the logo and the uniform will be very reminiscent of the Glory's short but pretty glorious past. Here is the new version of the Glory Eagle-head logo, along with their new wordmark, using imagery reminiscent of U.S. fighter planes of the past, and also of the buckeye.
  13. And the full uniform reveal for the Dragons. One quick note: In addition to the XFL and Kraken modifications, the big new thing is the number font, which is inspired by the Pitt Panthers, though not exactlyt he same font.
  14. How could I resist absconding with one of the best logos in all of sports? Seattle gets a monogram as their 2ndary.
  15. Next up, Seattle, and I am starting off with the helmet, which pretty much gives away the fact that the Dragon is changing once again. Yes, they won a title with the prior helmet only a few years ago, but it never really caught on so a new version was commissioned. Fans of the XFL will certainly recognize this dragon. I took the 2020 XFL Dragon logo, modified it to fit the existing (Barcelona) Dragons' color scheme, and decided to see just how big it could get on the helmet. The new design helmets could be a real problem here, as this is one huge decal. The secondary will be "released" next.
  16. Thanks for the heads up. I fixed the text. As to the branding iron handle. I picture about 3" separating the handles in the back, large enough for the stickers for the "U" and the U.S. flag.
  17. The rest of the 2010 Wranglers look, including the return of the branding iron handle and a new "sunset effect" on the sleeves. A lot stays the same, but still a bit of a new look to the jerseys.
  18. Getting geared up for the 2008-2009 offseason and that means prepping 2010 uniform and logo redesigns. Up in 2010 we have Arizona, Ohio, and Seattle, all getting some modifications in their logos and unis. Let's start slowly with the new secondary for the Wranglers, their brand iron logo on a state map. More to come soon.
  19. We pause our USFL broadcast for this brief word about Fantasy Football. The 38th Annual CFFL Draft is only weeks away. It's a league I have been in with 11 friends, most of us from the same university, 6 of us from the same floor on the same dorm in 1986. So, here is the draft logo for this year, with all 12 teams represented. If you are interested, starting at the Upper Left, we have the: Las Vegas Gamblers, Oakland Terrors, Salt Lake City Bards, San Diego Seals, London Werewolves, Stockholm Thunder, Toronto Tundra, San Antonio Express, Kansas Twisters, Albuquerque Generals, Zagreb Dragons, and Aberdeen Highlanders. We now return to our regularly scheduled broadcast of 2008 USFL Action.
  20. Uniforms: Not really, it has always been a league decision on uniform providers. By 1987 they were in bed with Nike, then Reebok took over in the mid 1990's and that will shift again in the not too distant future. As for TV rights: NBC carries the Friday Night Game, ESPN has Saturday Night and Sunday Night games, and Fox and ABC split the remaining 11 Saturday and Sunday double headers. Typically you will see either ABC or Fox have a national game at 12 on Saturday, with the other having 2 regional games, then both have a Saturday 4pm national game. On Sunday either ABC or Fox has a single national game at 12, with the other having 2 regional games, and then at 4pm they swap, with the other having the lone national game while the network that had their national game at 12 now has 2 regional games. All in all you have 12 games on broadcast TV each week and 2 on cable (ESPN), with no fewer than 8 games shown nationwide each week. That is likely to change as the league gets more invested in the EFN (ESPN Football Network, which currently does not show live games, only replays, and a lot of USFL shows, as well as college football in the fall-- Think of it like the Big10 network but with the USFL for now). That network is likely to get some games, and we may see one of the bigger antenna networks lose a contract to a cable network soon, with streaming coming quite a bit later.
  21. A good point. Navy socks, or white socks with stripes, might be needed. Also, since I am here, I have decided on the 3 teams that will get new looks in 2010: Arizona-- A tweak to the logo and a bit of ombre are coming to the desert. Ohio-- The eagle and the uniforms get an update Seattle-- A new dragon makes an appearance, one folks might recognize. We are building up to 2015, when Under Armor will get the USFL contract and every single team will have an overhaul with 2 primary sets, 1 alt set, and 1 throwback look. Yup, teams are going to get on board with the "too many options" trend of the 2000's. It won't be as bad as Oregon, but new combos, new alts, even 2nd helmets are coming to the USFL in about 7 seasons. Sorry for the wait, but for now, 3 teams a year get tweaked by Reebok.
  22. And our third new Reebok look of 2009. the Oakland Invaders. Not a lot of major changes here. Notes below. Oakland, like many teams in the late 2000's goes for a mix of minimalism, throwback nostalgia, and more alternates (pants mostly). Here are the items worth noting. 1. New tertiary logo is not on the uniform, but is used in marketing. It borrows lightning from the DC Defenders of 2020, but also has something of a commemorative patch feel to it. 2. New wordmark with drop shadow, which is also a feature of the uniform. 3. Striping returns to an early version of the look with thin navy lines surrounding a thicker 3-stripe pattern of lighter colors. 4. New number font with a thin outline and then a contrasting drop shadow. This element, along with the pant & helmet stripe is very much influenced by the Miami Dolphins' look of the late 1990's. 5. The collar features a modified version of the secondary logo in which the main logo is combined with wings (stripes) going out to both sides, similar to a pilot's wings. 6. The sky blue is lightened slightly from the prior version, but is never seen without some element of navy to offset it against the yellow. 7. New Sky Blue pants are used maybe 1-2 times a year, usually with the white jersey (Sorry, unitard fans, I hate that look, so you will very rarely see it as an option in this alt version of the USFL. Pants and jersey should contrast except for white on white used during very hot summer games.)
  23. I like the idea of a potential gold jersey for the Gold. Will have to think about that. As for Tampa Bay, first things first, they added a second secondary logo, so now they have their bandit rider, their TB monogram with the Stetson, and their third logo, one familiar to XFL fans, the bandit headshot. Beyond the new secondary, there are several updates to their uniforms. They removed all striping from the helmet and pants (very trendy in mid 2000's) They increased the size of their helmet logo. They added the new secondary to the sleeves and moved the monogram logo to the hip. They created a new number font that has 3 colors and uses angular "cuts" within the number. Some are calling this the "alarm clock" effect, and it is not going to go over very well (although I think this version is still superior to the actual look it is based on, the Bucs' horrible alarm clock font.) Next up, the third "tweak" update for 2009, the Oakland Invaders.
  24. The first of the 2009 Reebok Redesigns is ready. The Denver Gold make several changes to their look, without deviating too far from a design that has become iconic in the region. Details below. Denver makes several "minor" or is it "miner" changes to their look, including: 1. Removing the simple helmet stripe and replacing it with two tapered dual-gold "starburst" designs. 2. Adding a gold on gold bevel effect to the team numbers. 3. Adding a secondary logo (yup, they beat the Nuggets to it.) 4. Adding black sleeves on the white jersey. 5. Using the new starburst wordmark on the chest. Nothing radical, just an update. Next up is Tampa Bay, who also go with modest changes, though with one very controversial (and instantly mocked) new feature.
  25. Hi all. Just getting read to gear up for the simulation of the 2008 USFL season (Alt History). I will soon be revealing the new looks for 3 franchises (Tampa Bay, Denver, and a third team I have not decided yet) but first here are the Summer Bowl logos for the 2008 Summer Bowl in Jacksonville. This logo borrows heavily from the "Explore Downtown Jacksonville" logo found here. I figured the city's tourism offices would be involved in a logo design, so it makes sense to merge the two. Note the addition of the football shape and the sun, as well as a retro font and summery color scheme. First up for uniform reveals will be the 2009 Bandits, followed by the Gold, and then which ever team I think will be #3 (Still undecided). If anyone has ideas on a team that needs a facelift, let me know (you can see all the current designs on the Alt History website.
