Saintsfan
One thing you have to remember isd that in the days when second kits were being sorted out originally, money was an object for many teams, so just simply reversing colors on a kit or something simple like that may have worked against some teams but not against others. For instance a team whose kit is primmarily red shirts with white shorts, could just change to white shirts and red shorts against a team who play in red and white stripes. So a compleytely different color was often picked. Here is an excellent article on the history of football kits, particularly in this case third kitshttp://www.sportslogos.net/editorial.php?c_id=9On the designations of kits, the home kit is what teams will always wear at home. (For instance Man United's red kit or Blackburn's blue and white halves). The 'away' kit is often also called the change kit. (for example Arsenal's is currently blue) Most teams nowadays have a third kit as well, refered to as that, (Arsenal are currently using last seasons yellow kit as there third). teams traditionally only changrd kits if they had, because of a clash of colors, however in modern times kit manufacturers will often dictate that a club has to wear a particular kit so many times a season. So often that means teams changing kits even if there is no obvious clash. 2011/12 WFL Champions
