Brian in Boston
The National Hockey League's New Jersey Devils have signed a letter of intent to purchase the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters. The Devils' minor-league operations will move from Albany, New York (home to the Albany River Rats) following the current AHL season. The Devils have committed to operating the Lock Monsters in Lowell for at least two seasons.
slapshot
Thank you.Thank you.Thank you.It wasn't exactly a secret here in Lowell about the Devils' intentions. They had been the alleged frontrunner in the franchise sweepstakes for almost two months. Oddly enough, I was in Albany last month for a game, and didn't hear one word about the affiliate moving. The other rumor was that the Devils would put the team in Lowell for one season before moving out. We'll just have to wait and see about that. At least this assures Lowell having 10 seasons in the league, which means a new alternate jersey for the 2007-2008 season. It probably means new uniforms for next season as well, since the hurricane flag trim would be irrelevant to the Devils. At least the color scheme will stay the same (except for Louie, the mascot, who is purple).

Better hold off on the Alternate jersey idea. The Devils are an organization that is dead set againt 3rd jersey's. With them as the owners there might not be a new alternate jersey. Right now I don't think Albany has a third and they just have a working agreement with the Devils. The Lock Monsters will actually be owned by them. Although you will probably get the Devils template for new uniforms. The logo will probably stay the same maybe a color switch.

I thought the same thing about Carolina. But Lowell had a 5th-year jersey (mostly gray with red shoulders), and this year have added a black alternate with the Hurricanes' logo on the shoulders.Maybe the Devils will let Lowell have its own identity again. The jerseys with the Monster scales were pretty unique, but they were only worn for 3 seasons. And the color scheme had nothing to do with the parent club, the Islanders.
