Luigi74
Pittsburgh Penguins were to be either the Penguins or the Hornets.I believe the Pittsburgh Hornets were a minor league team that helped develop players for the Toronto Maple Leafs back in the 40's, so it might have been considered as a homage to that team. I know Bill Barilko played for them before making the jump to the NHL.There were two Pittsburgh Hornets teams. The first one lasted from 1936 to 1956, they moved to Rochester, NY when the Duquesne Gardens closed, the second version played at the Civic Arena from 1961 to 1967 and closed up shop when the Pens started playing. The first version of the Hornets were Toronto's farm team but I have some programs from the 60's teams and they have stories about players being called up or sent down from Detroit.
