Victor Starffin

Indeed! The Big Russian was one of the best pitchers in what is now NPB's early days, including an astounding 0.94 ERA for the Tokyo Giants in 1940. Starffin, whose career was put on hold when he was interred at a spy-camp during the War, returned and played until 1955. Tragically, Victor Starffin was killed in a car accident in 1957 at the age of 39.
