Great post. But I don't think the Astrodome got team logos on the outfield walls until 1977. I know they had them that year because I've seen This Week in Baseball episodes from that year with logos on the wall.

This attached photo is from 1976, I think. And I think that's the year because if you look really hard, you can see the Astros don't have the circle and number on the back of the jersey like they did in 1975. Note there are no outfield logos.

I believe this is the box score from the game pictured. If you look hard at the scoreboard, you can see the Astros got 1 in the first and second, and that No. 47, who was Joaquin Andujar, is the Astros' pitcher in this game.

Now that you mentioned the Astros,  here's the Astrodome.  This one's very short, compared to my previous posts.

1976-1985
---------------

Team logos were first seen on the outfield wall as early as the 1976 season.  The logos remained unchanged through the 1985 (even as some teams like the Cubs and Giants had updated their logos by then) are were removed entirely in 1986, the same year the Astros hosted the All-Star game and made the playoffs.

  • Note there's is an extra Astros logo next to the NL East team logos were some strange reason
  • The Pirates logo lacks the yellow rectangle and the script "Pirates" is arched.
  • The Braves logo is in a blue circle

Left Field:
from left to right: PIT, PHI, NYM, MTL, CHC, STL, HOU (for some reason)

Right field:
from left to right:  HOU, ATL, LA, SF, SD, CIN

Here's Jack Murphy (Qualcomm) Stadium in San Diego

1978
------

the Padres hosted the all-star game that seasons.  Team logos were placed on the outfield wall, but instead of primary logos, the cap logos were placed on the outfield wall instead. Each banner was squared rather than circular  In addition, not only there were NL team logos, but AL team logos as well.  The left field wall featured all the cap logos of the NL teams.  The teams were divided based on division and in random order.  There is also an NL logo in a red boarded and the 78 all star game logo above the NL West team logos

From left to Right:  PIT, CHC, STL, MTL, NYM, PHI,  SD, ATL, LA, HOU, CIN, SF.

The right field wall featured all the cap logos of the AL teams.  The teams were divided based on division and in random order, but for some strange reason, the Tigers logo is closer to the AL West team logos than to the other AL East team logos.  An AL logo in a red boarded is above the Angels logos.
From left to right:  KC, OAK, CHW, SEA, CAL, MIN, TEX,  DET, BAL, BOS, MIL, NYY, CLE, TOR

The AL team logos were removed entirely as the NL East team logos moved to the right-field wall.  Furthermore, NL team primary logos were now added next to each team's cap logo

1982

The team logos were removed

1983-1984
--------------
The team logos returned but they were placed above the wall behind the outfield wall (similar to Veterans stadium).  The banners were also different as each team logo (Except the Padres) was behind a colored diamond banner.  The NL West team logos were at left field while the NL East team logos were at right field, much like in 1979 to 1981.  The NL logo was between the Dodgers and Padres logos.  An MLB logo was next to the NL East team logos.

1985-1986

The Padres logo changed to 1985-1988 primary logo and it surrounded by a silver border, similar to what the 1989-1990 primary logo would be.  The Padres logo is also larger than the other NL team logos

1987
------
the same as 1985-1986 as the Pirates and Braves logos were not updated

Yes.  Arlington was one of those stadiums that shocked me the most after watching old episodes of TWIB.  The outfield wall was green rather than blue (during the 80s and the Nolan Ryan-era in the early 90s)

1977-1978
--------------

Team logos were placed on the outfield wall as early as the 1977 season.  The AL West team logos were on the left field wall and the AL East team logos were on the right field wall. The logos were ordered in alphabetical order by city/state.

Left Field
from left to right:  MIN, CAL, CHW, KC, TEX, OAK, SEA

Right Field
from left to right:   BAL, BOS, CLE, DET, MIL, NYY, TOR

Some notable quirks/inaccuracies:
The Angels logo is the cap logo rather than the 1972-1985 primary logo
The White Sox logo is the 1976-1990 alternate logo rather than the 1976-1990 primary logo
The Twins logo is the script "Twins" in red in front of the light blue shape of Minnesota rather than the 1972-1986 primary logo
The Athletics logo is the 1968-1970 primary logo instead of the 1971-1981 primary logo as the logo is white instead of yellow
The Orioles logo is the cap logo rather than the 1966-1991 primary logo
The Red Sox logo is the 1970-1975 primary rather than the 1976-2008 primary loog
The Indians logo logo is the 1973-1978 alternate logo rathen than the 1973-1979 primary
The Tigers logo is the 1968-1976 alternate logo (head only) rather than the 1964-1993 primary

I am uncertain about the 1979, 1980, or 1981 seasons.  By 1982 (after watching episodes of TWIB from that season), the team logos were removed entirely.

Next will be the Kingdome.  stay tuned.

1977-1978
---------------
AL team logos were first placed on the outfield wall in 1977 (the Mariners debut season). The AL East team logos were placed alaphabethicall by city while
the AL West team logos were placed randomly

Left Field
from left to right:  KC, CHW, CAL, SEA, MIN, TEX, OAK

  • The Royals logo is an alterante as there is no wordmark
  • The Angels logo is the cap logo rather than the 1972-1985 primary logo
  • The White Sox logo is the 1976-1990 alternate logo
  • The Twins logo is different as it has the "Twins" wordmark in front of state of Minnesota
  • The A's logo is the 1968-1970 primary rather than the 1971-1981 primary logo

Right field
from left to right:  BAL, BOS, CLE, DET, MIL, NYY, TOR

  • The Orioles logo is a cap logo rather than the 1967-1991 primary logo

  • the feather on the Indians' Chief Wahoo logo is white instead of red

1979
--------
The Mariners hosted the all-star game that year.  NL team logos were now placed on the outfield wall for that game.  Note that the NL team logos were
much smaller than the AL team logos

Left Field
from left to right:  KC, ATL, CHW, CIN, CAL, SF, SEA, LA, MIN, SD, TEX, HOU, OAK

  • The Reds logo is different

Right field
from left to right:  BAL, PHI, BOS, NYM, CLE, MTL, DET, STL, MIL PIT, NYY, CHC, TOR

1980-1981
---------------
Not sure about these seasons, but the NL team logos were likely removed.

1982
-------

The logo banners were much smaller than they were in 1979.  the team logos were still in the same order as the ones in 1979 (sans NL logos)

  • The Royals logo is off model
  • The A's logo changed from white to yellow.
  • The Angels logo has an inverted color scheme as the California shape is red with white letters
  • The Twins logo is still different
  • The Tigers logo is the 1964-1993 primary without the roundel
  • Indians' Chief Wahoo logo looks slighty off model

Here's the final AL park that had put team logos on its outfield wall:  Cleveland Municpal stadium

Team logos were placed on the outfield wall as early as 1985.  The banners were squared rather than circular.  AL West team logos were on the left field wall and AL East team logos were on the right field wall.  Indians retired number banners next to the AL West team logos and championship banners were next to the AL East team logos

1985-1986
---------------

the team logos in 1986
Left field
from left to right:  TEX, SEA, KC, OAK, CHW, MIN, CAL

  • The Mariners logo has a wordmark below the logo
  • The Angels logo was updated to the 1986-1992 primary logo

Right field
from left to right: CLE, BAL, DET, MIL, BOS, TOR, NYY

  • The Indians logo had a wordmark "Cleveland Indians" below Chief Wahoo in 1985 but was removed in 1986.

the team logos were reorganized again in a random order

  • Strangely, the Angels logo reverts back to the 1972-1985 primary logo

Not certain about the 1989 or 1990 seasons, but by 1991 the team logos were removed from the outfield wall.

Bonus:  Major League (1989 movie)
The classic 1989 baseball movie was filmed in County Stadium in Milwaukee rather than Cleveland.  County Stadium never put team logos on its oufield wall
but the logos were added to make the stadium look a bit more like Cleveland Municipal. The team logos were ordered differently.  In addition,  the squared banners looked much smaller than the ones at  Cleveland

1983-1993
---------------
The outfield wall changed from light blue to royal blue in 1983.  The team logos were removed and in the later years there were Pirates championship banners and retired numbers.

1994-1997
---------------
The team logos make a surprising return as this was also the year the Pirates hosted the all-start game.  The team logos are put in a random order. Also, there were no white circular banners, resulting in some of the logos blending in with the wall (the Dodgers & Braves logos suffers the most from this)  The logos were accurate and the Pirates logo was updated to 1997-2013 primary for the 1997 season.  The Astros logo was not updated to the 1995-1999 logo as the 1994 logo was still seen.  The team logos were removed altogether in 1998.

Here's Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta

1982-1984
---------------
Team logos were placed on the outfield wall in the 1982 season (maybe 1981 but not sure as there were no logos in the 70s or 1980 seasons).  The NL East team logos were on the left field wall and the NL West team logos were placed on the right field wall. The team logos appeared to organized based on alphabetical order of city/state but there are some errors. The logos were white rectangular banners

Mile High Stadium

1993
--------
Team logos were placed on the outfield wall in the Rockies debut season.  The team logos were divided both by division and city/state name.  Unlike most stadiums that put team logos on each side of its outfield wall.  Mile High put all the team logos on its left field wall as there are no logos on the right field wall.  Another more notable thing was that each logo featured a roundel that featured each team's city/state and name.  This is most noticeable with the Cubs logo.  Notable exceptions were the Cardinals and Expos logos which already were roundel logos and were not altered.  All the team logos were primaries except the Marlins, which used an alternate logo instead.

1994
-------
The Astros logo is updated to the 1994 primary logo.  However, the Giants logos is not updated to the 1994-1999 primary logo.  In 1995, the Rockies moved to Coors Field, which did not put team logos on its outfield wall.

Pro Player Stadium in Miami

the Marlins were a bit late in adding team logos on the outfield wall as several other teams began removing them from their outfield walls.  The team logos were ordered alphabetically by league rather than division though the Marlins and Rockies logos are in the wrong place.

Here's my final post on this topic. Dodger Stadium:

Normally, Dodger Stadium never put team logos on its outfield wall during this period, but when the stadium hosted the All-Star Game in 1980, there were team logos placed on the
outfield wall for that game only. Unlike most stadiums during that period, Dodger Stadium put cap logos on its outfield wall as opposed to primary logos,  NL team logos were located on the left field wall while AL team logos were located on the right field wall.   Note that the Red Sox logo is much father away from the other AL team logos and is closer to the NL team logos for some reason.

Left field
from left to right:  LA, HOU, ATL, STL, PIT, CIN, NYM, SD, PHI, MTL, SF, CHC

Right field
from left to right:  BOS, CLE, DET, OAK, NYY, MIL, BAL, KC, TEX, CHW, TOR, SEA, MIN, CAL

Conclusion:

MLB team logos on stadium outfield wall peaked from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s where at least 7 stadiums had team logos from 1978 to 1995. This was mainly seen in the multipurpose/cookie cutter stadiums of the era, more often seen in the NL rather than the AL.  In addition, nearly every stadium that had Astroturf featured put team logos on its outfield wall at some point.  By 2000, only one team was still putting team logos on its outfield wall, the Expos.  This came to an end when the Expos relocated to Washington (becoming the Nationals) after the 2004 season.
