Am I supposed to subscribe to the Athletic now? I don't know where all of the sports is supposed to be anymore. And I'm generally in line in Deadspin's particular brand of liberal-tinged sports reporting. Their soccer coverage stinks though.
Get it, but only at a discount.
The lowest price I know about is $36 for the first year, which is 60% off.
Also why you get access the everything, don't give them a lot of favorite teams as they'll flood your inbox. Unsubscribe from alerts too.

I cannot talk about the Xbox situation, but the ESPN app after the ESPN+ introduction has been poor. The updated app was really good but it seems overloaded now.

Any chance Conference USA or the Sun Belt would reconsider taking them? Is it just the religious aspect?

Is ESPN+ the same as the WatchESPN app?
No. It's a separate service with content not available on WatchESPN app.

Comcast to drop Big Ten Network from non-B1G states. Will continue to be carried in Illinois, Indiana, Maryland/DC, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Note: Iowa and Nebraska aren't be served by Comcast. And New York isn't listed, but Spectrum and Altice are dominant in NYC.

And Gonzaga's staying put in the WCC.
I imagine some of the teams which don't stand a chance long as the Zags are in there are gonna head to the Big West...
To piggyback on what LMU aid, there is still more money available in the WCC even with the renegotiation in Gonzaga's favor. NCAA tournament shares specifically since Gonzaga gave them a Final Four appearance last year, so there are five more years of $8M to the conference. While St. Mary's doesn't make the tournament ever year, if they do get in, they typically win and earn an additional share. The Big West isn't that successful.
Plus. the WCC is basically San Jose and north while the Big West is the southern part of the state.

So, my WCC might be in for a shakeup.
Gonzaga within the next couple weeks may be opting to bolt for the Mountain West. BYU may as well.
At least you didn't tell us that the A-10 wants Loyola-Chicago, or that the CAA wants UMBC now.
But the MWC claimed six universities have been subject of expansion.
MWC tv contract runs through 2020, but if they choose to go all-digital, what's the incentive for Gonzaga but for the multiple bid conference option?

I did subscribe for The Athletic for a year, I really like it, but this isn't sustainable.
http://awfulannouncing.com/athletic/the-athletic-raises-another-20-million-plans-to-double-staff-expand.html
Going from 120 employees to 300+ by the end of the year and expanding to 45 markets? Granted, they don't have to worry about real estate in each city, but that's a lot of salaries.

Fox's continual quest to own stations in several key NFL markets (and uber-ally markets) may come to fruition, once the Sinclair-Tribune merger is completed. Fox is set to buy at least six stations from Sinclair/Tribune, including three of the stations they sold in 2008 to help finance News Corp's purchase of the Wall Street Journal (WJW Cleveland, KDVR Denver, and KSTU Salt Lake City), plus Sacramento's KTXL, the long-awaited prize in Seattle's KCPQ (it didn't mention sister KZJO, which likely means they'll stay with Sinclair-owned KOMO-TV), and a wild card--WSFL-TV, the CW station in Miami/Fort Lauderdale.
I can't see Fox running a standalone CW affiliate in South Florida, which ultimately means incumbent Fox affiliate WSVN (much like their sister station in Boston, WHDH) will be forced to go independent, and in turn current MyNetworkTV affiliate WBFS, owned by CBS, will more than likely take the CW affiliation. That also means Miami would undergo its third affiliation/channel swap in the last thirty years, two occasions of which WSVN was a part of (losing NBC in 1989, due to the Peacock buying WTVJ, and now possibly losing Fox to WSFL).
FOX, or what's left of it after the RSN sale to ESPN, is totally all in on the NFL long term after getting Thursday Night Football

Except due to antitrust issues, the NFL can't start Saturday games until their minor league system (NCAA FBS) is done with its regular season. I don't think Week 13 is doable, as its too early in the year.
The Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 prohibits pro football games on Friday nights and Saturdays from the second Friday in September to the second Saturday in December.

Instead of retractable roof, there should be a retractable arena. The roof stays fixed, but the ice/court, stands, and concourses roll out kinda like the field in Glendale. All they'd have to do is build the entire arena (sans the structure that holds the roof) on a platform that's on top of like 3,000 tires, and then they could either automate the rolling of the interior, or simply hitch it to something super powerful - like a jet - and tow it out. I'm shocked nobody has tried this before.
BBTV,
Look to the French.
The stadium in Lille has a retractable roof, like the Arizona Cardinals, but moving half the grass also reveals hidden seating for an arena configuration.

Forbes makes those numbers up FYI
Never ever believe anyone is losing money on their sports team unless they open their books to the public or put the team up for sale
Forbes sets the mm market like a Realtor, no more no less (most of the time as the franchises are so limited)
Whose "non-hockey" business is NHL
better?
We know the Board of Governors hate Quebec's Videotron, but is Tillman Fertitta's mediocre casual dining empire(HOU) or Bruckheimer's TV/movie business (SEA) better?

So I have a question for everyone to ponder.
With Annapolis and South Bend hosting outdoor games in the near future, what non NHL city locations would you like to see host an outdoor game? Might as well add places that you'd like to see host PERIOD.
My thoughts:
- West Point: Since Navy has one in 2018, hosting one at West Point could work well. Could be the Islanders or Devils hosting, maybe even Philly.
- Tropicana Field: Being a former home of the Lightning, a Stadium Series game in the old stomping grounds against the Flyers would bring back the nostalgia. It's not the sexy venue, but it like playing in the old barn.
- Ohio Stadium: With Columbus on the rise, a Winter Classic or Stadium Series at tOSU would be interesting. Pair them up with the Red Wings and play up the Michigan/Ohio State rivalry and you should have success.
With signing the USNA, the NHL is to play games at the other service academies.

Not even most homeowners in New Tampa now remember that Flyers/Lightning series.

Isn't the problem that Penn State isn't interested in hosting the event and/or wants to put a bunch of onerous conditions on it?
True as this was part of the university's statement in 2016:
Quote"about playing an outdoor game at Penn State, but it’s believed financial demands by the university soured the teams on the neutral site [Beaver Stadium] as an option."
And unlike Ann Arbor being less than an hour from downtown Detroit, as stated previously, State College is much further away from a major city. But like most colleges between Christmas and New Years, the campus is 95% shut down. Regardless of a bowl game, campus facility staff isn't on the clock, yet for the union guys who will get holiday pay for sitting.
Michigan asked and received for $3M in rent for use of Michigan Stadium for 31 days (add another $1M from the lockout the season prior).
http://www.annarbor.com/sports/regents-approve-use-of-michigan-stadium-for-2013-nhl-winter-classic/
UM also was granted a one-day liquor license for non-suites at Michigan Stadium, which gave them $650K in additional revenue.
It probably doesn't help that Pegula is Penn State's hockey benefactor as opposed to Ed Snider, Ron Burkle, or that legislators won't grant them (or their concessionaire) a liquor license for Beaver Stadium

So 90+ minutes from Chicago and little chance of ride share drivers. At least Buffalo/Orchard Park was a suburb and Ann Arbor was much closer to more commerce.

New Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta is interested in bringing an NHL team to Houston, a possibility that didn’t exist under the NBA team’s previous regime.
Fertitta released a statement Thursday confirming interest in a hockey team in Houston. He recently met with league officials.
“I’m very interested in the possibility of bringing the NHL to Houston, but it will have to be a deal that makes sense for my organization, the city, fans of the NHL throughout the region, and the NHL Board of Governors,” Fertitta said. “We are in the very early stage of evaluating what opportunities may exist but there is nothing definitive at this point in time. We are simply asking questions and exploring our options.”

Really? I thought they were doing just fine and dandy in the MEAC.
It's not like the conference members as a whole are.
Savannah State is moving back to Division II by 2019.
SC State has been on the brink of closing for years even with debt forgiveness from the state. Bethune-Cookman has debt issues of their own which came to light this summer after the president resigned and they've borrowed from their endowment in recent years. Same problems at Howard.

Related to this discussion, I don't think Bob McNair thinks all black people are prisoners, and I believe that he was just using a handy cliche.
But, he has to do better. It's not just enough that rich old white dudes get to have power and money. That they're also expected to think just a little before they speak isn't asking too much.
Bob McNair isn't getting a Christmas card from the Houston chapters of the NAACP or La Raza this December.
You know a few owners, like the Jerrys (Jones and Richardson) and Martha Firestone Ford, are glad he took one for the cause. Someone likely told Jed York to stfu too.

And on the other side of it, you have Portnoy, proudly unchanging, proclaiming it as virtue. He was a piece of back then, he's a piece of today, and he'll be the man you can count on to be a piece of tomorrow. I find it vile, but I also can't deny that that's what wins nowadays.
While he's gained financial success from first the paper, then the blog(s), Portnoy has been afforded a goid education, but really isn't very bright. Heck, upon getting the Chernin money, he bought a race horse, gambles heavily and tries to flaunt a lifestyle towards his cis, wasp fanboys. He'll go broke within a decade.

Richard Deitsch ranked his top 25 play-by-play broadcasters
QuoteSome quick caveats: I did not include announcers working on sports television outside of the United States. If I did broadcasters such as Galvão Bueno, Bob Cole and Martin Tyler would be on the list. (Update: Andrés Cantor of Telemundo would definitely be on my Top 25 below. This was a total screwup on my part. I initially listed Cantor under broadcasters who work outside the U.S but he indeed calls games from inside the U.S. even if many of the teams he calls are non-U.S. teams.) I stayed away from broadcasters who are locally based, such as the fabulous Gary Cohen (New York Mets), Pat Hughes (Chicago Cubs), Jon Miller (San Francisco Giants) and Merrill Reese (Philadelphia Eagles). There are also a ton of quality broadcasters who did not make my Top 25 who would easily make other lists, such as Marv Albert (a likely Top 10 for someone else), Adam Amin, Jason Benetti, Tim Brando, Bob Costas, Joe Davis, Dave Flemming, Dan Hicks, Matt Vasgersian, Ted Robinson, Bob Wischusen and on and on.
His top 5:
5- Mike Tirico
4- Ian Eagle
3- Mike Breen
2- Al Michaels
1-Doc Emrick
